Oprah has the guy on who finds out who your ancestors are. I think this is an amazing gift to find this out and would love to be able to go through that process.

Turns out Eva Langoria is related to Yoyo Ma. Mike Nichols and Meryl Streep are related as well, and they did like 3 movies together.

It is blinking fascinating!!!

Fascinating? Yes, it is somewhat fascinating to hear the long term roots of celebrities. But an "amazing gift?" Sorry, I totally disagree. As an adopted child, there is no bloodline history for me to find, and I have absolutely no burning desire to know. I know who my parent were, they were the ones who raised me and loved me. Would it be interesting to search more about their backgrounds? Yes, it would be interesting, although I already know that my paternal grandfather's roots stretch back to the early settlers, so all that would be new would be some names.

I watched the show, and I admit that I enjoyed it. I just have seen too many people who are adopted feeling the need to find their birth parents because they felt something was "missing." Sure there are some happy endings when they find them, but more often than not, they find that their birth parents have put that in the past and so what they were "missing" still hasn't been found.

There are several companies that you can send in a DNA sample and have your genetic history sent to you......it is fascinating.

Ah Layfeyette that sucks holes! I am sorry...this world, this world.

I hope you had a happy childhood all things considered. Some kids with birth parents have more neglected and abusive lives than those that find their folks outside their blood line.

My sister just sent me this link and it is pretty great so I will send this out to you LL!

I appreciate the sentiment, but what is it that you are saying "sucks holes?" My parents were terrific, my mom was my best friend. If my parents did anything wrong at all, it was to set the bar so high for what a loving relationship is supposed to be that it has been difficult to find a partner who will measure up (and I mean that in a good way).

The majority of adopted children live very happy lives. The problem comes from "outside." The talk of wondering who the "real" parents are and the like. "Real" is not created by blood, but by love. The sad thing about those kids who are looking for their biologicals is primarily the fact that they can't realize that whatever they think is "missing" from their lives is a result of something inside of them, not some external thing that has happened. I am talking of children who are adopted from infancy, not the older children who have memories of biological families, that is a whole different issue.

I've had opportunities to "search" for my biological parents. My parents told me that they supported me if that was something I found myself wanting to do. I won't say my mom and dad were perfect, as no one is. But they were everything I ever needed in parents and more and the only reason I would ever search out biological relatives would be for medical histories that were not regularly obtained back when I was born.

Just a side note....my maternal grandmother was also adopted, as an older child. In true movie of the week fashion, the orphanage burned down, and prevented her obtaining any records regarding the two brothers that she remembered. But my nana was also one of the great ones in my life as well. It takes a special kind of person who is able to love a child who was not born of their bloodline and hold them as their own. Not everyone has that ability.

Any child born without the protection of their parents is abysmal in my eyes.

I am really glad you ended up with superior parents, that is the only thing that would help it make it better.

There are really great parents out there bringing up other peoples kids and I think that is really great, really perfect. I am happy you had a happy home, I wish it for all earthlings.

A pregnant 14 year old is being a superior parent when she turns parental rights over to those able and willing to raise a child. Doing so herself would be less superior.

The odds are I date back to one of these women.

But my family history is pretty common. Fled Spain in 1492, settled in western Europe, moved to Easter Europe in the mid 1600s. Grandfather immigrated here in 1908 fleeing arrest by the Czar's police.

I'm the genealogist in my family and have been able to trace them back to when they first came to America on both sides. I don't see it as some kind of amazing gift though..it's just a lot of work and research. It's not difficult at all though but it can be expensive and time consuming.

What I find interesting is when DNA changes family history....grandma getting busy with the postman, etc...

Likewise! It took me about 2 years to get all the birth, death, marriage, baptism certificates together to get my dual Irish citizenship.

I agree it certainly takes a lot of time and research. I have traced my father's side back to the early 1600s. Partly because his family had a fairly unusual surname. Mother's side has been a bit more difficult as the Welsh records are not as easy to access. Although I have tried to keep the search to immediate family ancestors I keep finding myself adding people that are not direct relations and my tree has grown to an enormous size.

A cousin of mine, who is 6 months older than my mother, has been taking a course on this and has been doing a lot of research on my mothers side of the family. When I started out she gave me a long lecture on making sure I checked all my facts before putting them on my tree. She gave me copies of a lot of her research to start me off. When I was checking through the papers she had given me I found that she had my maternal grandmothers birth date incorrectly listed. She insisted that it was correct and sent me a copy of the birth certificate. When my mother checked it the certificate was for another woman with the same name as my grandmother.  So for months my cousin had been researching the wrong person.
