Jesus Christ opposed social justice?????

Hey Christians! You know that the Bible tells you to BEWARE of FALSE PROPHETS, right?

There's your FIRST CLUE!

Plus....He is an IDIOT! Can't you see that?

God!

Glenn Beck Claims that Jesus Christ Opposed Social Justice

On his radio show today, Glenn Beck claimed that the concept of social justice is a perversion of the gospel, and that social justice is not something that Jesus would talk about. Beck said that social justice is, “a perversion of the gospel.” Beck’s point was that the gospel is really about capitalism and free market economics. According to Beck, Jesus was an anti-government conservative.

Here is the audio courtesy of Media Matters:

In response to a caller who is a Catholic that is upset about his church’s advocacy of social justice, Beck said, “I want you to know that even some members in my faith where I go church there are members that preach social justice as members, my faith doesn’t, but the members preach social justice all the time. It is a perversion of the gospel. Nowhere does Jesus say hey, if somebody asks for your shirt, give your coat to the government, and have the government give them a pair of slacks. That’s not what Jesus was saying. You want to help out. You help out. It changes you. That’s what the gospel is all about. You, you change it, not having the government dictate.”

Glen Beck could not define social justice if his life depended on it.

Doesn't seem to have a very clear understanding of Jesus, either. I'd say he's 0 for 2.

What about Christ caring for the poor and lower class people or throwing the money changers out of the temple?

eyesopened -> RE: Glenn Beck Claims that Jesus Christ Opposed Social Justice (3/12/2010 2:58:07 AM)

You are right.  Glenn Beck is an idiot.

In Jesus' day the Roman government did have social programs for Roman citizens only.  Citizens of occupied regions were not Roman citizens so there were no social programs for those who made up Jesus' audience.  So had Jesus been preaching in modern-day America, he may very well have suggested support of social justice.   As it was, he did tell his audience to go ahead and pay their taxes without complaint.  A message Glenn Beck missed.
I guess Glenn Beck missed the part where Bush made Government and Church the same in regard to social justice.
http://usliberals.about.com/od/faithinpubliclife/a/Funds_Faith2.htm
In January 2001, President Bush created, via Executive Order, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Since then, Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives were established at five federal agencies, assistance and guidebooks were provided to religious groups to help them to apply for federal funds, and websites were created for speedy access to applications.

And in February 2004, the President issued an Executive Order earmarking an astonishing $3.7 billion to be doled out to faith-based and other organizations.

Apparently, Bush's faith-based initiative was never intended to give religious-related groups equal footing in the federal grants process. Bush's faith-based initiative was conceived to be the centerpiece of his administration's domestic agenda, spearheading the final attack on the New Deal and the War on Poverty by replacing, not augmenting, federal social services.

http://www.faithbasedcommunityinitiatives.org/
In welfare and social policy, the Federal Government will play a new role as supporter, enabler, catalyst and collaborator with faith-based and community organizations. The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives has been established to make Federal programs more friendly to faith-based and community solutions and to make federal funding more accessible.

By Executive Order, effective immediately, each of the following Cabinet agencies will create its own Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to work in tandem with the White House OFBCI, to make federal grants available to Faith-Based and Community Initiatives nationwide.

So what Beck is missing is that The Government and The Church were merged.  Not sure how he missed that.

Most churchs do not preach the message of Jesus.  That's why I don't go to church.

Whatever; and He might have said: "Carbon dioxide is plant food", too. We just don't know.

"As it was, he did tell his audience to go ahead and pay their taxes without complaint. A message Glenn Beck missed."

A message GB did not address. Or need to. Although he has never, to my knowledge, advocated not paying taxes one owes; or, for that matter, complaining about them when paying them.

My personal belief is that Christ might well advise us to "Let the politicians discuss politics". He had a more important mission, and message.

What about Christ caring for the poor and lower class people

The Family, the engine behind the neo-cons, best known generally for the Prayer Breakfasts since Eisenhower's administration, teaches otherwise. They promote Biblical interpretation that justifies individual wealth and global conquest.

The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power
By Jeff Sharlet

A journalist's penetrating look at the untold story of christian fundamentalism's most elite organization, a self-described invisible network dedicated to a religion of power for the powerful

They are the Family—fundamentalism's avant-garde, waging spiritual war in the halls of American power and around the globe. They consider themselves the new chosen—congressmen, generals, and foreign dictators who meet in confidential cells, to pray and plan for a "leadership led by God," to be won not by force but through "quiet diplomacy." Their base is a leafy estate overlooking the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, and Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside its walls.

The Family is about the other half of American fundamentalist power—not its angry masses, but its sophisticated elites. Sharlet follows the story back to Abraham Vereide, an immigrant preacher who in 1935 organized a small group of businessmen sympathetic to European fascism, fusing the far right with his own polite but authoritarian faith. From that core, Vereide built an international network of fundamentalists who spoke the language of establishment power, a "family" that thrives to this day. In public, they host Prayer Breakfasts; in private, they preach a gospel of "biblical capitalism," military might, and American empire. Citing Hitler, Lenin, and Mao as leadership models, the Family's current leader, Doug Coe, declares, "We work with power where we can, build new power where we can't."

Sharlet's discoveries dramatically challenge conventional wisdom about American fundamentalism, revealing its crucial role in the unraveling of the New Deal, the waging of the cold war, and the no-holds-barred economics of globalization. The question Sharlet believes we must ask is not "What do fundamentalists want?" but "What have they already done?"

Part history, part investigative journalism, The Family is a compelling account of how fundamentalism came to be interwoven with American power, a story that stretches from the religious revivals that have shaken this nation from its beginning to fundamentalism's new frontiers. No other book about the right has exposed the Family or revealed its far-reaching impact on democracy, and no future reckoning of American fundamentalism will be able to ignore it.

Jesus threw the money changers OUT of the temple.

Did we?

LadyEllen -> RE: Glenn Beck Claims that Jesus Christ Opposed Social Justice (3/12/2010 7:38:16 AM)

I'm gobsmacked. It would be interesting to know what his audience make of such remarks.

Mind you, if what he's saying is that Jesus felt charity and compassion to be personal matters not requiring outside authority then he may have a point. Clearly Jesus does not say to ask permission of the authorities before giving and neither does he promote the idea of passing charity and compassion via the authorities to those in need.

But, he misses the point, as so often with the anti-government crowd that the government is the people and that part of its purpose is to execute the will of the people collectively to provide charity and compassion to those in need.

The real problem is that the government has ceased to be the people - but I guess that would be an unspeakable truth for the right who rather like that they can control government through the election process and lobbying with the big buck contributions of business. So instead they brand government as evil - which coincidentally it may have become by way of their control over it.

thornhappy -> RE: Glenn Beck Claims that Jesus Christ Opposed Social Justice (3/12/2010 7:48:06 AM)

Boy, he stomped on a hornets nest with this one - he was even contradicted by his own church.

[Beck said] “Am I advising people to leave their church? Yes! If I am going to Jeremiah Wright’s church,” he said, referring to the incendiary black pastor who led the church attended by the Obama family members when they lived in Chicago. “If you have a priest that is pushing social justice, go find another parish. Go alert your bishop and tell them, ‘Excuse me, are you down with this whole social justice thing?’ ”

Religious bloggers, from the Rev. James Martin, an editor at the liberal Jesuit magazine America, to Joe Carter, at the conservative magazine First Things, took Mr. Beck’s decree as possibly an attack on Catholic teaching, and definitely an affront to Christianity.

Father Martin wrote on the Huffington Post: “It is not enough simply to help the poor, one must address the structures that keep them that way. Standing up for the rights of the poor is not being a Nazi, it’s being Christian. And Communist, as Mr. Beck suggests? It’s hard not to think of the retort of the great apostle of social justice, Dom Helder Camara, archbishop of Recife, ‘When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.’ ”

Mr. Beck himself is a convert to Mormonism, a faith that identifies itself as part of the Christian family, but which is nevertheless rejected by many Christians. Two Mormon scholars said in interviews that social justice is integral to Mormon teaching too.

Kent P. Jackson, associate dean of religion at Brigham Young University, said in an interview: “My own experience as a believing Latter-day Saint over the course of 60 years is that I have seen social justice in practice in every L.D.S. congregation I’ve been in. People endeavor with all of our frailties and shortcomings to love one another and to lift up other people. So if that’s Beck’s definition of social justice, he and I are definitely not on the same team.”

Philip Barlow, the Arrington Professor of Mormon History and Culture at Utah State University, said: “One way to read the Book of Mormon is that it’s a vast tract on social justice. It’s ubiquitous in the Book of Mormon to have the prophetic figures, much like in the Hebrew Bible, calling out those who are insensitive to injustices.

“A lot of Latter-day Saints would think that Beck was asking them to leave their own church.”

Mr. Barlow said that Mr. Beck’s comments were particularly ill-timed because just this year, the church’s highest authority, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, issued a new “Handbook of Instructions” to church leaders in which they revised the church’s “three-fold mission” and added a fourth mission statement: care for the poor.

Where is it that you find this term 'social justice' as a reguirement in our constitution?....where did it come from?.... could it be that you and your little communist friends use this term as your 'manisfesto' to villify anyone who gets off their asses and makes a good living and not hand the fruits of their efforts over to losers like you who want something for nothing?.... I think that is EXACTLY what  you and the ilk like you beat you lame ass socialist/communist drums about daily.... Well numbnuts, that is what starts wars, and if you and the turds like you want something from others that you HAVE NO RIGHT TO GET,  I suggest you arm yourselves and go take it.... but with that comes the FACT that we who value economic FREEDOM (which is the purpose of our country in the first place), will be happy to blow you and your little band of commie idiots away..... as a matter of fact, you can COUNT on it.... You will fall flat on your little communist ass's and the country will go on.... only without the nagging of misguided, brainwashed idiots like you and the left wing pukes that just don't get the concept of freedom.... but one day you will get the memo....and although you won't like it.... you will either get with the program, or get the fuck out of this land....  I for one think its time to round up our little Marxist pukes and provide some 'transportation' to Cuba or some other socialist mecca (oh wait!...that's right!...they don't want your lame ass either!)...  either way, you are wearing  out your welcome here, and the people are about to give you and yours a lesson in "..If you don't like America..... then fucking LEAVE!".... This is NOT your country to do with as you choose asshole.... and we will prove it to you real soon.....count on it!

The "little Marxist pukes" were probably thinking of "social justice" concepts like Rousseau's "Social Contract" and other Jeffersonian ideals--you know, the ones that laid the basis for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, so that we wouldn't have to continue under the British aristocracy.

So you're off by a century/century-and-a-half.

Wrong country, too. Have you considered Burundi?

The U.S. GDP, $14,500,000,000,000, makes it the richest nation in the world--TRIPLE that of #2, Japan ($4,910,692,000,000).

We can afford to take care of our citizens.

Or are you concerned about per capita? We're only #5 there, at $46,443 (I confess--I make much more than that).

If you'd like to move to a richer nation per capita, your choices are:

1 Qatar $87,717
2 Luxembourg $78,723
3 Norway $53,269
4 Brunei $50,103

Enjoy!

Take a look at the poll numbers numbnuts....go out and actually talk to people outside of your little circle of idiots and you will discover that a vast majority of people are running out of patience with loud mouth, know it all turds that think they are 'owed' something by taking from others..... Our nation is founded on LIBERTY...and that means freedom from a confiscatory government run out of control with lame assholes like you that claim 'social justice'..... what social justice?.... to change the nation to be as you and your ilk want?....by what right?.... Where is it that you think you can take what is not yours?.... Well bud, I have news for you.... even if it takes Nullification, a big chunk of this land is armed, and ready to show you that you will NEVER succeed in your twisted little idiology..... we WILL prevail and you will be left in the dustbin of stupidity that you so richly deserve.... so read em or not..... try imagining how you and that idot Obama think you can cram this shit down our throats and not draw back a bloody stump where your brain once was..... We will FIGHT you with any means and by ALL means...and that means open armed conflict.... there is an old saying that simply says,  "Don't mess with Texas"...and that applies all over the middle of this land, ...we have fought for our freedoms from idiots like you....and we will again if needed..... and that includes all who love the rights of economic and individual liberties that is the only glue that holds this nation together..... try taking that away by whatever means and you will find yourselves as the hunted.... and Obama won't be able to save your ignorant ass.... You are nothing more than a socialist fool.....!

And here's the problem.

Where are you when the right is grabbing? Where were you when the deficit exploded throughout the Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II years? Where are you when votes are grabbed by buying them with tax cut money, stealing money from established services and borrowing instead to pay for agendas? Where are you when the right wants to legislate morality?

Talk. You're talk and an attitude.
