Geez, where to begin? For one thing, even ranchers get trained on how to do these. For another, ranchers have easy access to antibiotics if there is an infection, and lastly if it goes really wrong - the animal can be put down. Not exactly an option with people. It does bring up an interesting subpoint of where does the right to harm yourself because you have fetishized it become illegal? Sure, few of us will argue a consentual spanking - how about a consentual amputation? And I, for one, DO feel that suicides should be illegal. People then forced to receive medical attention RECOVER. It is an illness that is causing them to attempt suicide, and I would no more deny them medical attention (and indeed, they'd be forced to receive it) than I would someone who is in a diabetic crash. And honestly, I think that home-medical procedures with permanent mental and physical ramifications and high chance of infection should NOT be done at home. And, to throw in another couple of cents - I'm rather GLAD my doctor has gone through the incredibly tough process of getting high enough grades in a four-year scientific program to prove him/herself worthy to get into a medical school and then successfully gone through a residency. That kind of helps me to think that they're qualified to handle whatever I need. Some things, sure, one can just look up in a medical dictionary or home health guide, diagnose and treat and heal. Other things, like surgerical procedures - I'd like to be done by someone with a bit training. The low proportion of doctors to regular society has much to do with the difficulty of schooling and training - including the very high time and money cost - that many people cannot commit themselves to, even with student loans and such available. Malpractice claims (and hey, I'm not arguing some of them are quite legitimate) and trying to work within PPOs and even regular insurance companies also contribute to the scarcity. Doctors don't regulate themselves to be scarce just so they'll get more money.
