Oh, on a totally different note, OP should consider that maybe losing this girl was not such the tragedy it seemed after all. It left him wide open to meet the wonderful, sweet creature that is wisdomtogive.

for me, if someone uses the words mentor, protector, guardian or anything like that, then regardless of gender or whether we're friends, just getting to know each other or well on the way to something more. the second i hear one of these words i simply walk away. i've known many people who have used those words and they all had one thing in common, their lives were always full of drama. i'm not saying mentor ship is bad or unnecessary but, for most of us it's just a facet of having friends. it just seems to me that those who need special labels for their friends tend to be rather dramatic

I realized a lot of things after this occured.This was a poly couple mentoring her....they new she was being involved with me....they didn't like the idea that she found someone and she was happy about it. So basically they made her an offer she could not refuse....but still they interfered....and to me thats a no no! And yes i did take in the bigger picture from all this. It made me much wiser and less foolish.

poeticfreak, I've never used any of those terms, but I don't engage in BDSM with all of my friends routinely.

At that time, I had recently had a breakup, and didn't want to have sex, or date, and did want to explore and learn. Since those specific couple of people were helping me figure things out and try new things repeatedly, I think they were functioning the way mentors *should*.

DarkSteven, we didn't have any relationship structure - we'd sometimes hang out and get a bite to eat or go do other vanilla things together, but it was not intense, or nearly as time-consuming as an actual relationship. I'm not sure what went on in your mentoring situation, but it sounds quite different from my experience.
