I'm a bit floored this morning... Firm has been out of state on a business trip for the past couple of days and is scheduled to fly back home to Georgia this morning. I called him yesterday evening to let him know that while attempting to check him in on his flight, I was unable to and that he needed to check in at the airport counter. Okay, a bit of an extra hassle for him but all-in-all, no biggie. It turns out, that he was flagged by the Department of Homeland Security to check his passport. WTF? Firm wasn't flying into or out of the country. They told him that he needed to be able to give the telephone number that is on his passport. WTF, again? There is no telephone number on his passport... at least not printed anywhere on the passport itself. Fortunately, after three tries he was able to give them what they said was the correct number and he was cleared to get his boarding pass, but I am at a total loss as to what on earth is going on. Firm wasn't the only one who experienced this... another gentleman who had been at the same meeting who was scheduled for the same flight has the same problem. Random check to be sure... I can't imagine any kind of profiling that would apply to him other than "plain, caucasian, American male". Firm's name and appearance is as all-American as "John Smith". About the most subversive association that Firm has in his life is his membership in this forum. Is anyone aware of any new requirement for US passengers on domestic flights to carry their passport?

DHS is not staffed by the best and the brightest. When Bush formed it, he simply moved paper shufflers from other agencies to it, so that it did not require the funding of new staffing. So the other agency heads used it as an opportunity to clean out their deadwood. There's more to screening than ethnicity. I was once flagged for buying a one way ticket with little notice. I' surprised that he was even carrying a passport. In future, I think Ill go Amtrak. Less hassle.

Gosh- if I gave a phone number- that was 7 years ago. I would be pressed to recall even what that number was. BTW_ GREAT Pic of you! I love the pose.

An awkward thought to express comes to mind... Many would stand up for the rights of criminals lest one innocent person is inadvertently caught in the system... Then they won't know to look for you. Which, looking at some of the twats with placards at these teabagging parties is a bit worrying: I get the impression that those things are the first time a lot of the wankers have left the trailer park for years. Maybe if they'd actually been on the electoral register and bothered to vote they wouldn't have the current situation to complain about in the first place.

I'd suspect it's probably a reaction to all of the death threats angry gun totin' white folk have started hurling about since the last election, and which has started to escalate since the healthcare thing went through. People without passports aren't any less of a threat in those terms, but if that's the main mechanism the DHS* uses to track people, then it's not going to be covering a lot of the people they need to keep an eye on. *(I love that acronymn: it's a furniture shop over here...)

I think what happened to Firm would be one of the new security procedures following the attempted Christmas bombing event a few months ago. "The Department of Homeland Security immediately put additional screening measures into place for all domestic and international flights, and warned that passengers may notice new procedures and should allot extra time for check-in. This security procedure will be annoying for most passengers, as we already have to show ID when checking in and before boarding. Maybe this random interviewing to keep everyone on their best behavior? And it is much cheaper than installing new body scanners. Hopefully he won't have this experience when returning home. And if it does happen, writing down the names and badge numbers, etc of the security staff is good to have if you wish to file a formal complaint.

Somebody travelling under somebody else's passport is a bit more likely to be up to no good than somebody who isn't, I'd have thought.

While I don't disagree, I can't help thinking that as long as they aren't physically endangering the plane and other passengers (which physical screenings for weapons would cover), what business is it of the TSA or DHS? When no crime has happened where they are specifically suspected, why do ordinary, law-abiding citizens have to prove that they aren't up to "no good"?

They don't, but if they're traveling under a false passport they've probably committed some form of identity theft. I don't believe the right to a secret identity is protected by the constitution, and identity fraud is something most western nations have been making an effort to crack down on recently, even if they haven't had a load of white right leaning lunatics issuing death threats at politicians they don't like for a year or so. Your point about people changing addresses and phone numbers during the life of a passport is well founded, but asking for information that is on the paperwork they've got but not on the passport does seem a pretty solid way of letting somebody prove that they're who they say they are. Your other half did, so no harm was done.
