RO... I have no effing idea what you are on about.

I suspect I don't want to, either.  [&:]

Stress test.  They didn't give a rat's ass about any phone number, or any other nonsense they might have come up with.  They just wanted to watch how he handled the chickenshit demands, and see who he called.

He is an intelligent, articulate, conservative veteran.  This administration makes no secret of finding such a person to be a potential threat.  Or someone else attending the meeting was on a watchlist.  Or they didn't like his tie.

Consider a cell of terrorists about to board one or more planes from either the same or different airports at the same time. By taking advantage of online check-in, and assuming those boarding the planes don't trip any other profile triggers, the potential terrorists get on board without incident or suspicion. There need be only one terrorist actually checking everyone in from a safe, distant location.

It still doesn't make sense to me.  Online check-in doesn't allow a traveler to by-pass any screening or security measures.  It only saves having to stand in line to get your boarding pass along with everyone checking baggage.  And anyone wanting one less official scrutinizing their appearance and/or i.d. at the airport needs only to check-in at one of the automated kiosks.

*sighs*  Perhaps I just don't have a devious enough of a mind to see the connection.

well look at it from the brighter standpoint.
its all the easier to group flights to off your political opponents as an act of some innocent muslim being accused of a terror operation when you know instantly who is on every flight.

what was billy butt head up too?  15 maybe?

you mean this?
well its just assurance that you are being well protected thats all :)

Oh for Christsake.

So now this is about the current Presidential administration directing the TSA to harass conservatives?

Is it my imagination or are all conservatives starting to go off the deep end into conspiracy theory and militia territory?

the country was designed to have active militias didnt you know?

Are you familiar with the report Sanity has referenced, RML?  It was discussed in these very forums, I seem to recall.

But then, we all know what an active imagination you have as well.

We'd love that!

lol... Firm should never be accused of taking himself too seriously.  Actually, that applies to us both.  [:D].

Yeah, so are the profiles of people like Timothy McVeigh. You have to understand that profiling goes beyond race or religion.

There might have been 101 reasons from random check to a suspect matching his description.

As for the passport, you need it for passing ports, hence the name. I'd make a complaint based on the fact that he wasn't told he had to carry such documents to travel and that if the laws have been revised, that citizens must be advised.

Vendaval -> RE: "Let Me See Your Papers"... (3/26/2010 4:48:51 PM)

That makes sense. When we check ID's at work a standard practice is to ask for their address and birthdate to see if they do not tell us the same information as is on the card. This works well with people trying to use their older sister or brother's ID to buy alcohol or tobacco.

No laws have been changed.  Passports for domestic travel aren't required.  He wasn't asked for his passport... merely to provide information that matched his application.

As for complaining?  lol... That would be a pointless exercise.

There is a mindset that if you don't wish to be open and share information, then you must have something to hide.  That frame of mind appears to be gaining momentum.

Musicmystery -> RE: "Let Me See Your Papers"... (3/26/2010 7:08:20 PM)

If you're trying to convince me the Department of Homeland Security is a costly bit of theater that accomplishes nothing, you're too late.

Like the Patriot Act, it's an excuse to channel funds and circumvent the Constitution.

Hi Treasure. Ok, I misread the part about the passport. So essentially, they were asking him to confirm information then, correct? In principle, I don't see anything wrong with this, though I will say having flown in and out of the US, the airport security tends to be a little intense.

A lot of it seems like smoke and mirrors though, giving the public the impression that they are doing something to stop terrorists, though I know that there are some proven applications that do.

AnimusRex -> RE: "Let Me See Your Papers"... (3/27/2010 6:08:44 PM)

Man, I wish "I told you so" felt better, but it doesn't. People wondered why I went on and on about the Jose Padilla case.....

So can we all agree now, that surrendering civil liberties to "keep us safe" is a stupid bargain? That maybe requiring the government to actually have evidence of wrongdoing before locking people up is a good safeguard? Even if someone shouts "Terrorist!"

In all seriousness, suppose Firm had been confused with some rightwing nutjob? And hauled off to a military prison without even a hearing? It not only CAN happen, it DID happen.

I hope things end for the best, but I also hope that next time a guy starts spouting off about how "civil liberties" make us less safe, Firm has an interesting point of view to share.

Real0ne -> RE: "Let Me See Your Papers"... (3/28/2010 12:34:56 AM)

do you have any idea how much money is involved when they can pull this kind of bullshit on sucker americans?  well into the trillions and it takes 10 years before the dumb shits in this country wake up and even then they go right back to their own puke and start all over again.

It turns out, that he was flagged by the Department of Homeland Security to check his passport.

WTF?  Firm wasn't flying into or out of the country.

It's a crying shame Treasure. Typical ain't it.....those of us who found no value in promoting the war on terror and associated climate of fear are the people who pay the price. I'm right in thinking Firmhand had no truck with this climate of fear business aren't I Treasure?

Random check to be sure... I can't imagine any kind of profiling that would apply to him other than "plain, caucasian, American male".  Firm's name and appearance is as all-American as "John Smith".  About the most subversive association that Firm has in his life is his membership in this forum.

A couple notes:

- The "no-fly" list is highly unreliable. Even Senator Ted Kennedy ended up on it, as well as infants and other highly unlikely people.
- If his name is as common as John Smith, odds are higher than average that there is SOMEBODY with the same name who Dept. of Homeland Terrorism is on the watch for.
- There were some reports that Al Qaeda is now recruiting non-Arabs, although given the source and lack of verifiability, I generally don't give much credence to such reports.
- As others pointed out, your IP address may have had something to do with it. The national security agencies are actively intercepting all Internet traffic (or at least, all traffic that goes over AT&T lines - which is pretty much everything). Of course nobody knows for sure what they do with it, but the general consensus seems to be that they look primarily at "who is talking to whom" information.
- Since somebody else at the same meeting was also flagged, my guess is that it was targeted rather than random. As to why, that would be complete speculation. The only thing that's obvious is that they aren't trying to conceal that there is some investigation.

That's a good idea. If someone is too stupid to remember their address or their siblings birthday, then they are too stupid to be drinking.
