Stress test. They didn't give a rat's ass about any phone number, or any other nonsense they might have come up with. They just wanted to watch how he handled the chickenshit demands, and see who he called. He is an intelligent, articulate, conservative veteran. This administration makes no secret of finding such a person to be a potential threat. Or someone else attending the meeting was on a watchlist. Or they didn't like his tie. I mostly prefer to drive, than fly.

I'd make a complaint based on the fact that he wasn't told he had to carry such documents to travel and that if the laws have been revised, that citizens must be advised. - LA

That makes sense. When we check ID's at work a standard practice is to ask for their address and birthdate to see if they do not tell us the same information as is on the card. If you're trying to convince me the Department of Homeland Security is a costly bit of theater that accomplishes nothing, you're too late. Like the Patriot Act, it's an excuse to channel funds and circumvent the Constitution.

In principle, I don't see anything wrong with this, though I will say having flown in and out of the US, the airport security tends to be a little intense. A lot of it seems like smoke and mirrors though, giving the public the impression that they are doing something to stop terrorists, though I know that there are some proven applications that do. - LA

Man, I wish "I told you so" felt better, but it doesn't. People wondered why I went on and on about the Jose Padilla case..... So can we all agree now, that surrendering civil liberties to "keep us safe" is a stupid bargain? That maybe requiring the government to actually have evidence of wrongdoing before locking people up is a good safeguard? Even if someone shouts "Terrorist!" In all seriousness, suppose Firm had been confused with some rightwing nutjob? And hauled off to a military prison without even a hearing? It not only CAN happen, it DID happen. I hope things end for the best, but I also hope that next time a guy starts spouting off about how "civil liberties" make us less safe, Firm has an interesting point of view to share.
