Level,

Are you still trying to see if you can get your dick into everyone's box? I thought you let go of that idea a couple years ago *winks*

If the dick fits, and all that, you know... [8D] It's good to see you back here!

Now..... to send thorny some c-mail...

Actually I don't think you need three neurosurgeons to do this. There is the thingy for inserting a picture, just insert the text "Please limit filesize to less than 200KB". Possibly go on to say "Files larger than 200KB may be deleted" unless they are really really good or whatever.

I think something like that would be reasonable and not so hard to implement, or perhaps 200KB is too much, that's not up to me, it's more what the system can handle. I don't kno how or why these limitations exist, but for example I am in a professional website pretty much for work. It actually costs money, and the limit for a shared file in X MB. Now we are talking 2,000 page service manuals in some cases, and sometimes the need to be proken up by Winrar or some other compression software. I think the limit is something like 20MB. What I don't understand there is why it is OK to upload three 15MB files for Winrar to reassemble, but it won't take the whole file at once. The net result is the same, the bandwidth, disk usage and processing power required to service the function doesn't really change. Yet the limitation exists.

However inserting picture is a diffent thing, as it's not going to come down to "Click here to reassemble the file and display it in a new window" because that would wreck the whole thing.

Actually we could all send in some money and CM could get better servers, a few more terabytes and maybe even a faster connection if one is available, but everybody is broke these days so so much for that. Plus they seem to have a real aversion to charging, which is a good thing.

Realize this, an animated GIF contains each and every frame of the animation. That means one picture could contain one, or a thousand frames. I had Microsoft GIF animator and I saw what happens to the filesize when you put one together, and the compression is not all that good. You could hit 200 KB real quick.

They already do that, which is why this thread kind of surprises me. I thought file size was already limited.

Not sure, Panda, and not really willing to risk the "Wrath of Mod" to find out. [:D]
That said, I suspect that the sheer number of gifs being posted contributed greatly to the forum slowdown. Most folks post pics once in a while, but the OP seemed to be doing it in nearly every post, and often more than one animation per post. Then, others would quote the posts, animation included, putting more of a drain on the servers.

The ability to post pics is nice, but like anything else allowed here, it can be abused. If the users all went apeshit and started peppering the forum with a crapload of large pics, I suspect the rule would be changed pretty quickly and pics disallowed entirely. From what I've seen in this thread, the Mods don't want that. The best course seems to be for the users to show some self control, and not abuse the pic function.

If people do not read, and do not heed, notices in big red letters that say DO NOT SEND MONEY TO OTHER USERS FOR ANY REASON, do you really think they are going to read, and heed, anything else?  There is, in fact, a file size limit on the upload box; however, whether that limit is too high or is even a customizable notice is not within my area.

Perhaps I was not clear before:  We do not consider this a site problem that needs to be resolved.  We consider this to be one person's problem that appears to be resolved at this time.

Termyn8or -> RE: TOS (3/28/2010 6:36:52 PM)

Nice to meet you 21. I remember what it was like to be 21, and nothing is the same.

At any rate, yes, the feature is enabled and only a few have a problem with it. Not so long ago embedded picture were not allowed at al IIRC. Perhaps this thread points to the reason.

I don't speak in videos, and I don't even have flash on this PC so all the youtube links are useless to me for the most part. I have to go to another PC to view them, and I would suggest that anything posted based mainly on a video in a link should be highlighted or something, then every so often I'll go to my main PC and take a look.

Even then youtube warns me that they are phasing out support for my browser, and I am not updating it. If they want to cut me out of their "market" that is fine, then I see no videos. I have reached a state of something or another. I have mucho media and players that'll play damnear anything, and it keep bugging me to update Mediaplayer. No friggin way, then it looks for licenses before it plays anything. Fuck that.

But my position must be based on my own tenets, personally I don't care if no pictures were allowed at all because I don't use that function. But that doesn't mean I can say screw you all who want to post pictures.
