(CNN) -- A Lebanese man charged with sorcery and sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia is scheduled to be beheaded on Friday, the man's lawyer said Wednesday. May El Khansa, the attorney for Ali Hussain Sibat, told CNN that she and Sibat's family were informed about the upcoming execution. She said she heard from a source in Saudi Arabia with knowledge of the case and the proceedings that Saudi authorities "will carry out the execution."

The Saudi Ministry of Justice could not immediately be reached for comment on the matter. El Khansa said she has appealed to Lebanon's prime minister, Saad Hariri, and president, Michel Suleiman, to stop the execution. Amnesty International, the human rights group, has called on Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah to block it as well.

Sibat is the former host of a popular call-in show that aired on Beirut-based satellite TV channel "Sheherazade." According to his lawyer, Sibat would predict the future on his show and give out advice to his audience. El Khansa told CNN her client was arrested by Saudi Arabia's religious police (known as the Mutawa'een) and charged with sorcery while visiting the country in May 2008. Sibat was in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic religious pilgrimage known as Umra.

No Refund On The Return Ticket, Either!

So. These ignorant, barbaric savages are going to behead someone who came to their country as a tourist because he tells fortunes on television in his home country. You know what? Fuck these people. Pump every drop of it out, pay them fair value, and get the hell out of the Middle East. Let them burn each other at the stake if that's what they want to do. They want to live in the 15th Century, let 'em have at it.

That must be the same kind of attitude that conquistadors such as Cortez had after witnessing things like Montezuma's human sacrifices. The kind of thinking that drove the subjugation of those thought to be 'primitives' in Africa and the Americas, and so on.

Is there any point at all in even bothering to ask you what the hell you're babbling about this time?

Sanity -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:18:27 PM)

No, because you're incapable of understanding many very basic concepts.

When we killed Saddam for doing stuff like that, and other more serious crimes, we were intruding. I say, so what. To me it's like the democrats with health care. The ends justify the means.

thornhappy -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:19:36 PM)

I heard about this on the overnight BBC and couldn't believe how they'd bother to nab a foreign national.  If they didn't want him in country, they could've blocked him from proceeding on the Hajj and deported him.

Thadius -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:19:42 PM)

I think he is rambling on about how we as outsiders looking in on a culture and their practices see things as barbaric and such...

This is you happy? Comparing beheading to health care?

No, this is you retarded.

DO you drool a lot?.... I'll bet your lips are moving while you read this

Why does this not surprise me that you would say something like this?

Sure, but unless he's trying to argue that the only reason we consider it barbaric to slice off the heads of fortune tellers is because we are culturally biased, he's making no more sense than he usually does.

So, uh is it too late to find out if this thing is gonna be televised?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Edited to add: I wonder if there is any symbolism associated with the day they chose to behead this man. You know the whole religious dude killed on Good Friday...

TheHeretic -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:38:22 PM)

This is a horrible thing.  I will hope that his martyrdom becomes a rallying cry against the fundamentalists.

servantforuse -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:42:00 PM)

I couldn't care less about that story. It happens every day over there.

Aneirin -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:45:25 PM)

If it wasn't for the oil SA has, would the US be in there sorting out this tyrannical regime ?

But, that's it isn't it no one dares raise hell on these countries, for they guard themselves with oil.

This oil issue really must be a thorn in the side of the west, so much reason to quell, but they can't because of the oil, kind of ironic really.

Thadius -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 6:50:28 PM)

Hell, I would be lying if I didn't have a passing thought or 3 about leveling the entire region and making it into a full service fueling station. It is the same as it has been for as long as man has been around, protected by the resource that everybody else wants, be it spices, silver, gold, oil... The sad part is that in most of the oil rich nations, most of the people are living off of far less than our poverty level, and some might suggest worse than some of our homeless.

It is what it is.

If it weren't for the oil my choice would be to just let them live in whatever century they feel most at home in, and tell them to keep their insanity on their own side of the borders. If this is the way they wish to live, let them live that way.

I wish it was possible for the rest of the world to stand together and say, "We don't wish to do business with you any longer. For the next 5 years, we will buy none of your oil. At the end of that 5 years, we will consider starting anew with whatever government happens to be running  your country at that time. Make your decisions accordingly." Stop propping up this 15th Century tribal regime, and let their political situation sort itself out internally.

Aneirin -> RE: Our Friends, The Saudis, Will Behead A Tourist Tomorrow (4/1/2010 7:11:14 PM)

I am just wondering what will happen when the oil in those regions finally runs out, or because of it's scarcity, they start holding the stuff to ransom. The oil fuels the world's economies, we need it simple as that and so I suspect the US in particular is being very careful what it does in those lands.

SA has bought weapons and expertise, but somehow I think it will not be enough when the final push comes, but it would not surprise me if there was a few nukes buried in those oil fields for just such a time. Before the oil became available the region was just warring tribes nicking camels of each other and riding the desert, I think it would not matter to them at all that much at all if the oil ceased to be, they would just carry on where they left off, it is everywhere else that would suffer for stupidly becoming reliant on something that is so fragile and will either run out, or become harder or less economical to find and produce. One thing is for certain when oil becomes scarce, there will be very little available for civvy use and of that, only the wealthiest will afford to have access.

The thing is, the Saudis are the moderates in the area. They truly are our friends, and the hope is that they will climb into the current century as the world continues to shrink because they're mingling with us through the wonders of modern travel and communication and help to lead the rest of the Middle East towards a brighter future.
