NeedToUseYou -> Suprised no one posted the new video of our military murdering Iraqis. Here it is. (4/5/2010 1:08:53 PM)

http://www.collateralmurder.com/

edited to change wikileaks.com to .org

It's a site set up by wikileaks.org showing a new or rather old video that they just got, that shows our military killing people, and even running over a corpse with a tank. Some of those shot were kids, and two journalists.

There's what  1/3 + of your tax dollars is paying for, but let's just run up the debt, the military does such good work.

But according to the military, this was an an okay military action.

I think it's worth watching after all we are paying them to do this for us.

I'm surprised anyone should be surprised that this is the stock in trade of the shitstorm known as war. It aint like in the movies. Attempts to sanitise it are pointless.

I'm not surprised at the evil of war, I'm just surprised how many outwardly nice people are okay with violence, and terror, as long as it isn't slamming into our sky scrapers.

Most people have not the least idea of the experience of war NTUY, whether as a combatant or a civilian caught up in it. In some ways it would be good if they did, though on the other hand its wonderful that they dont.

Just, you know, theoretically speaking, what would you have done in that situation? 6 men with AK-47's, shots fired, one man with a RPG...what would the proper course of action have been?

With respect Elisabella, that is the sort of question asked after the event which in 99% of instances, where something even more dreadful than intended occurs, is really unfair on the actors. Despite all the training, the discipline, the experience of the veterans present, there isnt a soldier there, (on either side), who isnt scared witless, confused and trying to keep himself and his mates in one piece. The results of that focus, combined with sleep deprived minds and the other stresses on combatants, can be terrible.

If there is anyone to be blamed in 99% of these cases, its those who started the damned war in the first place - and far too often with no comprehension whatever of frontline combat.

I agree. It turns out the "RPG" was actually a camera, but they had no way of knowing that. Some of the people in the group were clearly carrying rifles, the man with the camera was hiding  behind a building and pointing the camera in a way that  made it appear he was aiming a weapon... I watched the whole video, and can't find a single reason to fault any of the troops. A terrible tragedy, but no fault of the helicopter crew.

I agree. I can't speak of the war itself, I'm no more educated about the reasons or necessity behind it than any other civilian with the internet, but you can't fault soldiers in a war zone for acting like, well, soldiers in a war zone.

Exactly...it is a tragedy, but it's one of those things that happens.

So, I guess the consensus is shoot anyone carrying anything..., because all kinds of things look vaguely like all kinds of thing. Is that honestly the standard for killing people..

Lovely.

Moonhead -> RE: Suprised no one posted the new video of our military murdering Iraqis. Here it is. (4/5/2010 2:01:59 PM)

I beg to differ. War is a fact of life and hell is merely a fantasy.

In a war zone...where "things" have a nasty habit of actually being weapons?
Hell yes....not for nothing, and this is from someone who hates that we are their...but each and everyone of those soldiers first duty is to bring themselves home alive.....now you and I don't have to like that...hell you might even disagree with that....but if you were the mother, father sister, brother, husband wife ,daughter or son of thhat soldier you would have no problem relating to that emotion.

Do feel free to pursue a career as a commissioned officer if you feel your knowledge of how to behave in a war zone would help the military win this war.

Because that's the point of war, you know. To win. Anything else, everything else, comes in at best a distant second.

If you want to live then, sadly, yes. In the open field its difficult to tell the difference between some things and weapons at the kind of distances you need to keep in order to be out of range if they are weapons. In heavy vegetation (jungle for instance) or urban environments, youre even more ready to confirm weapons when youre well within range if they are. In the kind of wars we've gotten involved in of late where there is no frontline and the enemy dress like the civilians, everyone is a potential enemy until proven otherwise.

I doubt the US military would be one of the best in the world if their standard procedure was "wait til the rocket hits the helo before firing back"

Also Hitler carpet bombed the living hell out of Britain. Suggesting we emulate this tactic?
