I think some people are confusing the Tempurpedic with the fancy new air bed. They are two different animals entirely.

About 6 years ago I set out to get a new mattress. I did not want anything really high off the floor but didn't want to sleep on the floor. My vision was a high quality mattress on a platform bed. I had had multiple inner spring mattresses that I hated, after a while you can always feel the springs....just yuck and painful.

I explored the Tempurpedic and loved it. My only concern is that, I get hot easily and that was one thing I was worried about, based upon what I had heard. What I found, and purchased, was a hybrid. It is made by Simmons and was not cheap AT ALL. But dammit, I spend 8ish hours of my day on it, and I want to get a very good night of sleep when I am there. I built a platform for it (because I couldn't see paying the money they wanted for basically a wooden box), with storage underneath. And yes, king sized is the only way I will have it also.

It is not a traditional mattress.......very thick and very rigid........and you do not flip it. the base has a thin spring system, then there are several thick, high tech layers of memory foam, and then, my saving grace for the heat issue, a pillow top. This seriously is a different mattress. People that like a really firm sleeping surface like me, think it is too soft at first and people like like a really soft squishy sleeping surface think it is too hard, at first. I had to lay on it and relax to really appreciate it. I am a bed snob, everything has to be 'just right'. Mattress, pillows, sheets, even the quilt on top. But I can tell you that, even after 6 years, I love that bed. It does take the sheets for extra deep mattresses but they are very easy to find now. If you go this route, I can give you a few chains that have some good high thread count sets that are of good quality and not hundreds of dollars.

If you go with a Tempurpedic and get hot, get a high quality feather bed to top it off and then cover both with a mattress pad and the sheets for a deep mattress. It is basically the same idea as my mattress, just in different components rather than all in one. The feather bed will help disperse the body heat, like my pillow top does, for a more comfortable and cool night of sleep.

Well after a few years of sleeping of couches- I went all out- and got a king sized.  It was great for a year or 2.

Then I wanted to change the furniture.  The overage on the bed became a catch all for junk.

Anyhow-- if "Sir" wants, and gets;

then, I am abit confused - in that you have little to say over it??    Or I misunderstand.

Be that as it may-

I see alot of over priced beds.   Shoot for alot of bang for the dollar, yet- something quality.

Just curious PA, why do you want to flip your mattress? If it doesn't need it, why would you want the bother?

A good mattress one can get 15 years out of it.

Not so on the pillow tops.

They last 7-8 years.

Gravity pulls the fibers down-
My bed is pushing the 8 years.... so- I now am wondering if it was the exceptional deal- that I thought it was at the time.

Mine has a 25 year warranty. I figure 15ish and I will be happy.

And yes Ward.........but I was curious.

PA, when you figure how much time is spent there, and how vital a good night's sleep really is.......

Let's just look at it from a really big dollar scenario.

Say a person paid $1,500.00 for their desired sleep surface.....whatever that might be. And it maintained it optimum for 10 years. That is roughly $ .41 a night for a good night's sleep. Seriously worth it to me.

I slept on an airmatress or 4 months and the fucker sucked. My back hurt so bad after being on that air mattress night in and night out, and I was never so glad to get home to my own bed as I was after sleeping on that air mattress.

That is vastly different than the Select Comfort air mattress I believe the OP was talking about.

The type of mattress is under discussion. The size is not.

Just because He makes the final decision doesn't mean I don't help with research, do some of the footwork and weigh in with my preferences. He considers me a very competent co-pilot. (And He wants me to be out of pain and sleep well for the next ten years or so too.)

Anyway, let's not disintegrate into a critique of our particular power exchange/authority dynamic. WIITWD works for us.

But I do appreciate your input- and everyone else's. Some of the observations have been extremely helpful. Thank you LaT. It seems you have done your homework on this.

I have a memory foam topper on our bed. I love it, but sweated through the sheets every night. So I bought a cotton mattress topper which worked really well, then because my Sir was getting cold, I took that off and put on an electric blanket - which worked just as well as the mattress topper. If I could afford a memory foam mattress, I would get it, then put a topper on it.

And yes, it is not at all like getting out of a bed with springs. There is no spring giving you impetous, so it feels harder to get up, but the comfort is fabulous.

I am amazed at all the heat comments.  I thought it was just me at night.   I agree that a blanket underneath can help.

92, I am sorry if I said anything offensive.
