I slept on an airmatress or 4 months and the fucker sucked. My back hurt so bad after being on that air mattress night in and night out, and I was never so glad to get home to my own bed as I was after sleeping on that air mattress.

I recommend either a soft air mattress

That is odd. How much did you inflate it?

From what I have read you should put a protective cover over your mattress, box spring and pillows.

Not having read all the posts on this....

Assuming you have hotels/motels near you, some offer the tempurpedic mattresses in the rooms. See if one near you has this option and spend a night or two to try it out.

Personally I would go with a waterbed (been sleeping on mine for 25 yrs). Same principals....NO SPRINGS with a contour fit and no pressure points. Always the same temperature unless you change it (and it takes at least 24 hours to change). No big waves if you get a waveless or semi-waveless.

Yikes!

Water beds.

I had one when I was 20.  It leaked.

Anyone else tried the various European sleep systems?  I've slept on one at a local B&B, and it was fantastic.  Lasts much longer than standard mattresses, no flipping, etc.

The current, conventional mattresses that don't need flipping are like that because the manufacturer essentially cut them in half, so you couldn't sleep on it if you flipped it.  It lowers the price but cuts the lifetime.

I think some people are confusing the Tempurpedic with the fancy new air bed. They are two different animals entirely.

About 6 years ago I set out to get a new mattress. I did not want anything really high off the floor but didn't want to sleep on the floor. My vision was a high quality mattress on a platform bed. I had had multiple inner spring mattresses that I hated, after a while you can always feel the springs....just yuck and painful.

I explored the Tempurpedic and loved it. My only concern is that, I get hot easily and that was one thing I was worried about, based upon what I had heard. What I found, and purchased, was a hybrid. It is made by Simmons and was not cheap AT ALL. But dammit, I spend 8ish hours of my day on it, and I want to get a very good night of sleep when I am there. I built a platform for it (because I couldn't see paying the money they wanted for basically a wooden box), with storage underneath. And yes, king sized is the only way I will have it also.

It is not a traditional mattress.......very thick and very rigid........and you do not flip it. the base has a thin spring system, then there are several thick, high tech layers of memory foam, and then, my saving grace for the heat issue, a pillow top. This seriously is a different mattress. People that like a really firm sleeping surface like me, think it is too soft at first and people like like a really soft squishy sleeping surface think it is too hard, at first. I had to lay on it and relax to really appreciate it. I am a bed snob, everything has to be 'just right'. Mattress, pillows, sheets, even the quilt on top. But I can tell you that, even after 6 years, I love that bed. It does take the sheets for extra deep mattresses but they are very easy to find now. If you go this route, I can give you a few chains that have some good high thread count sets that are of good quality and not hundreds of dollars.

If you go with a Tempurpedic and get hot, get a high quality feather bed to top it off and then cover both with a mattress pad and the sheets for a deep mattress. It is basically the same idea as my mattress, just in different components rather than all in one. The feather bed will help disperse the body heat, like my pillow top does, for a more comfortable and cool night of sleep.

What a great Idea!! I am currently having hot flashes in addition to my general furnace-like sleep temperature.
I also need truly good sheets and pillows. Well worth the investment!

Not the last I heard - I have a platform bed or sleep on a comfy couch when relatives come over.

The comfy chair or inflatable bed would be used waaaaay before the floor!  It be drafty down there!

I despise memory foam beds! With my fibro, lupus and arthritis it was literally impossible to roll over or shift positions. It was like being trapped. I have a pillow top king bed that cost about 1900.00 not quite 2 years ago, no you can't flip it but you can turn the mattress which pretty much does the same thing.

Trying out beds in hotels is a great idea! An expensive bed is an investment IMO and not one that I will skimp on considering how much time I spend in bed.

Camille is a classy lady.

I had bought my bed FROM a best western.

I tho would be careful on ANY used cloth item these days.  Bed bugs are back in NYC.  Trust me, you do NOT want bed bugs.

Speaking of hotels, I lurvz the Hilton/Hilton affiliate beds. Lurrrvz them.

Hilton rolled them out about 5 years ago and I think all their chains have them by now.  They were custom made for the chain.

Can't say the same for Residence Inn.

I attempted to use a Sleep Number bed at a different Residence Inn, but it was busted; you couldn't adjust it.  I've seen a lot of complaints about their high failure rate.

PA. considering some of the things I have done on hotel beds, I don't like them when I stay in a hotel.

I wouldn't want one in my home...:)
