Bad...real bad choice. Mike, I am no fan of the Taliban. All I am saying is that when you look back at history from Omar's perspective, he didn't really have alot of choices. He was mortified when he found out about 9/11 and that bin Laden was behind it. He tried to expel bin Laden from the country but bin Laden refused to leave or give himself up. Omar's rag tag group of armed students that made up the Taliban existed to counter the corruption and lawlessness that was rampant post Soviet defeat. Why, from his perspective, should he allow a US invasion to find/defeat bin Laden when he was still cleaning up the mess from the post Soviet invasion? I am not pro Taliban, but I do believe that history is often about perspective as opposed to right or wrong. All of that granted....save of course for his failure to not only do the right thing but save his country a vindictive and punitive invasion. Fuck right or wrong ....the pragmatic choice for him should have been a complete disavowal of the events of 9/11 and a renewed conversation about the ills of fanaticism. Now I fully realise for a fanatic like the Mullah to do so would have involved a truly radical sea change in his thinking.But 9/11 represented that chance....it truly was a "come to god" moment for not just this one leader but radical Islam itself. Moderate Islam failed in the same exact way to embace the moment and use it to denounce what was a truly horrific attack upon peaceful citizens. 9/11 could and should have dealt a death blow to radicalism...of course it might have helped if we had someone sitting in the Oval Office who could have avoided using words like "crusades"...and the silly "wanted dead or alive" thing.An opportunity was missed post 9/11....and certainly not just by this one eyed Mullah!

I don't know, if the Reverend Sun Myung Moon came to my town and said that the new way of doing business is gonna be such and such, and if you don't gobble the tube to our satisfaction, we are going to make life uncomfortable for you....... Meh, they have been playing stick and ball with one anothers heads since before we were anyone, and will be doing so long after we are no longer anyone. One thing a tribal leader cannot lose is face, life optional, he has sons and they have sons, and they will have sons and they will have........and thinks in those terms, something we never do. That's their system of governance. Another good point that I'd like to add to, if I may, Ron. About a year ago, some intelligence was leaked concerning the FBI interviews with Sadam while he was in captivity prior to his execution. Sadam said that the reason why he was being so evasive and coy about his so-called "stockpile of WMDs" prior to the war was because he was much more afraid of an invasion from Iran than he was the US. He needed Iran to think he had these weapons to keep them at bay. He believed the US was bluffing when they threatened war, because they had been threatening for years but took no action. Once again, our leaders started a war because it supported their ideology, as opposed to understanding the region and its leaders and how that knowledge might be used to avert war.

Ah, yes Huntie--- An infuriatingly simple way of blinding our techno-military and reducing us to the one wearing the ribbons in our hair and the pinafore at the prison squaredance if it ever comes to an 'us'. Lets not be throwing all our junk steel at the middle east, we are gonna need some of it laying around, in case we ever got to do an actual 'conventional, old-timey' war again. Did you see that junk steel is bringing 18 bucks a ton lately? p.s. and they pretty much got the world shipping and somewhat seemingly unrelatedly, the copper sewn up in south america. Sgt. Ron

But essentially, it adds nothing of interest to the situation that confronts us regarding the chinese, our largest creditor is also our largest possible military threat, pragmatically and recent historically, korea, viet nam...(they've been testing out a few small ideas on us for awhile now, it would not be a very good day, should they actually take more than a passing interest in us.
