Brain -> Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/12/2010 8:15:21 PM)

The law is for everybody. At least it's supposed to be for everybody. Something has to be done about this situation where politicians or heads of state get immunity. The church is not doing enough to bring those who did wrong to justice.

Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI

RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have
the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against
humanity”.

Not much of an ambush when you announce it in advance.....[8|]

slvemike4u -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/12/2010 8:22:28 PM)

Does seem to defeat the stated purpose of an ambush....perhaps he is counting on the Pope's trust in his faith blinding him to the danger[8|]

Shorter Richard Dawkins: Hey everybody look at me!

He can deputize Christopher Hitchens, if Hitchy can put down his drink long enough to waddle up and slap on the cuffs.

Dawkins is brilliant, but he's also a grandstanding self-promoter.  Ordinarily, this is a trait I admire, but it's upsetting to see this particular issue trivialized.

Pope has not done anything that would warrant arrest in any country. Dawkins makes fool of himself and his atheist party by attempting to use the situation for atheist propaganda. Tony Blair perhaps could be arrested if laws would apply to people in power (for his involvement in starting the Iraq war).

adx -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 12:15:00 AM)

DUMB as shit man who the hell thinks its a good idea to arrest the Pope the Holy Fucking Father near almost 4 million Irish Catholics? As I recall from the tales passed down from my pure Irish Great Grand mother they hate the fuckin English just give the IRA a reason to rearm why don't they? I would say perhaps somethings changed in the last 150 years thats about how old the story's are but I doubt its changed so much that the Pope could be arrested with out consequence. Im not Catholic at all no one in my family is as far back as is known to us and I wouldn't describe my self as pro child molestation either but I dont think any nation could try and punish the pope easily or safely.  Catholicism is the largest religion in the world it could end very badly for any who tried.

The best you could go with is something akin to corporate manslaughter i.e. this has happened under his watch and equates to abdicating his responsibilities. Personally - I don't agree that it follows the Pope must bear responsiblity - but I suppose you could make some sort of case.

But I'm scratching my head here and wondering when Dawkins was elected to judge and jury on these matters and by whom.

It's fair to say Dawkins is on a crusade to promote science at the expense of religion - a one man witch hunter no less - all he needs is a mob running with him and he's in business.

pahunkboy -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 4:14:36 AM)

He wont be arrested.

DCWoody -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 4:16:40 AM)

Won't happen. For one thing, while he'd clearly be in trouble if he wasn't a catholic.....Vatican, British laws don't apply.

Moonhead -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 5:04:20 AM)

He wouldn't be the Pope if he wasn't Catholic either.
That's a bit of a given, really.

variation30 -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 6:56:15 AM)

dawkins is an idiot.

I hate the youtube atheist movement. it's so annoying that I've stopped admitting I'm an atheist and now tell people I'm a Catholic.

reynardfox -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 8:36:32 AM)

Richard Dawkins could not pass a stool without informing the media.
You really shouldn't encourage him, then maybe he can go back to shouting at people from behind a carrier bag at Marks and Spencer like any other loony.
Pity he didn't keep this verbal excrement to himself.
If he wants to pick a fight, why not pick it with someone who matters?
Obergruppenfuhrer Rattzinger is old news and of no concern to anybody but his Reich, sorry flock.
Now the Borgias, they knew how to give good Pope.....

That's not the case, if you count Catholicism as it's own religion than the largest religion is Islam: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article3653800.ece

But I agree with adx, the politics of arresting the Pope…..it’s just not going to happen. I assume Dawkins is of the same opinion, hence the press release as opposed to springing this on the Pope after his arrival.

I haven't the faintest idea about German law but if the Pope had committed the acts for which he's currently getting bad press, in the US, they might well have constituted offenses worthy of arrest:

"A criminal charge of aiding and abetting or accessory can usually be brought against anyone who helps in the commission of a crime, though legal distinctions vary by state. A person charged with aiding and abetting or accessory is usually not present when the crime itself is committed, but he or she has knowledge of the crime before or after the fact, and may assist in its commission through advice, actions, or financial support. Depending on the degree of involvement, the offender's participation in the crime may rise to the level of conspiracy." http://criminal.findlaw.com/crimes/a-z/aiding_abetting_accessory.html

Then you were never really an atheist, where ya?

And if you are siding with the Pope over Dawkins, you aren't really that bright, either.

slvemike4u -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 10:45:27 AM)

Well no argument over the not too bright part of your post....but do you really see this ever coming too pass.I am Catholic, lapsed to be sure, but a Catholic all the same and no one is about to arrest a Pope..it just isn't about to happen.Personally I would like to see all that have had anything to do with this scandal ex-communicated from the Church and prosecuted by civil authorities to the fullest extant possible under the law.
But here's one of the problems the Church faces...it seems the scandal itself was so damm wide spread that they would be hard pressed to find another Pope, meeting all of their usual requirements who hasn't in some way shape or form touched by this controversy. Anyone considered to have the experience and the gravitas necessary for the post was most likely in a position of authority during the worst periods of this scandal. This is indeed a case of the Church paying for their apathy towards the children of the 70's and 80's today
To put it bluntly the Church is fucked for a generation...and possibly beyond without some fundamental change in how they do business.Like letting their priests be married...and allowing woman to enter the priesthood.....but don't hold your breath waiting on those changes either....a pope is likely to be arrested before those revolutionary ideas are embraced !

takemeforyourown -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 10:49:40 AM)

How would one go about arresting a Pope, anyway? Has that ever been done?

thompsonx -> RE: Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI (4/13/2010 11:22:50 AM)

I've stopped admitting I'm an atheist and now tell people I'm a Catholic.

This is without a doubt the funniest thing you have ever said.
It is also the only funny thing you have ever said.

It would be easy, one need only catch them with their pants down, very hard to avoid capture that way.

Mike,

I didn't say anything about arresting the Pope. I just said he wasn't very bright for taking sides with the Pope over Dawkins, one of the greatest thinkers of our day.
