Look at the bright side-it may result in a comeback for the dirigible.

I've got an upcoming trip scheduled and I am getting a little worried that I wont be able to make it. I'm not so worried about getting stranded over there, though. I could always use a longer holiday.

They are back home, safe and sound where they belong.

All I got was some chocolate and a t-shirt with a Vermeer painting (Girl with Pearl Earring) on it.

I'm going to bed now.

I am for one glad people are getting home, but this is not over yet, someone is in for a severe roasting for initiating and keeping the no fly situation. It appears the National Air Transport Association (NATA) acted on information from the UK Met. Office and stopped the operation of all jet aircraft. Words have been said that modern aircraft can fly in these conditions, which would not surprise really, as sand in the air over deserts gets sucked in and the planes still fly, but, there is to be an inquiry and someone is going to take a fall. There is also talk of airlines wanting compensation for loss of business, and suggestions that the government should financially help the airlines like they did the banks.

The government (ie we taxpayers) should not be called on to compensate the airlines for their losses from being grounded. The airlines are private commercial operations and must accept that as such they stand or fall on their own merits, as with any other business, in a world where lawful authority determines in what circumstances they shall operate and that these circumstances may change, one where market conditions may change to their detriment and one where "Act of God" may act on their ability to exploit opportunities - for worse in this case or for better in others.

The argument that they ought to be compensated because they were allegedly "wrongfully prevented from trading," doesnt wash - if thats what they thought then they ought to have raised their concerns earlier with the lawful authorities. Does anyone compensate truckers when the ferries go on strike? How about when, in direct contravention of EU law, French farmers and/or fishermen stop all international road transport with their antics and the French government does nothing?

Airlines should look to their insurers for help if anyone at all should pay up, and perhaps talk to their bankers who after all already have all the taxpayer money they might wish to access. Given BA's merger with a Spanish operator and the annual savings that should generate, there should be more than enough in BA to support bank funding of commercial losses in the form of a loan or other mechanism.

Yes, there may be a strategic question of funding airlines because of the numbers they employ and the businesses they support, but given that this doesnt wash when it comes to manufacturing businesses (even entire sectors), thats a difficult argument to employ.

Dontcha just love these airlines? Three, amongst them Ryanair have stated that they shall not be compensating passengers for the delays and cancellations - as required by law - in respect of food, drink and accomodation costs. This compensation isnt anything to do with contractual conditions, insurance and the like - its the law.

If anyone needs any help with making a legal claim in the courts of England & Wales on such an airline in this respect, please do let me know?

Yay! Glad to hear of the safe return of your mother and sister! What a relief that is!

Thanks.  They ended up enjoying their extra time in Amsterdam.  My mother (my sweet, gray-haired, old fashioned mother) actually took a tour of the red light district!  She was particularly baffled by the sex shops: "everything is leather with studs and I have no idea what some of those weird devices are for."  I'd have asked her to describe some of the "weird devices" looked like but I don't want her to know that I know what they are for.    It would totally blow her image of me.

Now if we can just get her and my sister to stop saying "ya-ya" all the time!
