I agree with Term, the human race has not matured since the middle ages. The only difference is that we have politicians telling us what is the cause of our fears, who did it, why they did it, how they did it, and what they are going to do to change that. However, fear breeds violence. You stir up some of the more unstable people, who like everyone else, gather in groups with the same ideas and theories, and eventually someone is going to crack. History is full of people who have been gathered into groups and whipped into a frenzy. During the plague it was groups of men who tried to emulate the passion of Christ while traveling from town to town. They were known to attack people they saw as nonreligious, different, immoral etc. We have had charismatic leaders in modern times who have preyed on people's fears, gave them something to be afraid of and then got them to run riot in the streets.
