This just in from Allentown Morning Call:  Pennsylvania's Eastern Border Has Been Closed. (Including all rivers and canals, we know Jersey people are wiley.)

Tomorrow's headline will read:  Mass Absenteeism at Local Businesses. (But actually stopping at a stop sign is making a comeback.)

hehe I am just bitter.  I got lost in NJ once..in the dark...just me and the smell.  Spooky.  Had to finally throw down the map and think, "okay, if I were the ocean, where would I be?"

Now Jersey has some really fantastic things going for it.
The wonderful Portugeuse restaurants in Newark's Ironbound section.
Rafting lazily down the Delaware with favorite people, a cooler full of subs and beer and a favorite herbal substance.
The Land Of Make Believe!!  (Tongue in cheek on that one)
The shore
The mountains.
Rutgers!!!!!!
The Stone Pony
Concerts at Waterloo Village

kisshou, PA is really not colder tan NJ - but it IS colder than FL!  FL is too hot for me - but it is better than Jersey!

People thinking that Florida too hot is a popular misconception. A typical day is sunny 85 with a beautiful breeze blowing. I also lived in the Delaware Valley where it was sweltering in the summer, no breeze at all. The great thing though was the food , there was a hostess outlet and a great farmers market.  New Jersey does have really awesome tomatos.

Another Jerseyite here.  I'm in Monmouth County now, but originally from Bergen County.

And I did escape for eleven years, but I came back for the husband.  The things we do for love.  <sigh>

That depends on where in PA and where in NJ you're talking about.  Western and Central PA, especially in the mountains, is almost always colder than someplace like Atlantic City.

ORIGINAL: windchymes: Sorry Merc...but the NJ state bird is the Greenhead Fly, and the gnat is second.  The mosquito has slipped to third.  Do ya miss the WaWa?  You can't give directions to anyplace in NJ without using a WaWa for a landmark. And there's nothing like the smell of the south Jersey wetlands!

Well, I'm having pork roll and scrapple for dinner.  With Blueberry Champagne from the Renault Winery. Anybody want to join me?

(To anyone not familiar with the Greenhead Fly, there are an gigundous, aggressive gold fly with huge bright green eyes who will physically pick up and move your glass of ice tea out of the way so that they can have a clear shot at biting your arm.  They will dive bomb your car that you are seeking refuge in so hard that the paint chips.)

Greenhead flies! Remember them as well as the biting horse flies on the beach with 2 inch wingspans. If one of those decided to dine on you, it continued until you or he were dead. (Example of Greenhead...http://beverlys.net/LJ/BuggingYou.swf)

Boy do I miss a 'Taylor Ham' (aka Pork Roll) & egg sandwich. I bought my first boat one year as a very young man, with money made from selling pork roll at Englishtown. Anyone remember that place?

And "WHAT EXIT?" is asked more often than what city when you find someone else from NJ? Then you argue which "shore" is best but even after agreeing you still argue about who knows the best back road to get there. "Best" defined as which are least likely to have "Staties" patrolling.

If you think the experience of "swimming with the dolphins is fun"? Well come to NJ! Where you pay for the privilege of of beach access. You may not swim with the dolphins but, depending on the 'season', you could swim with tar balls, jelly fish, seaweed, and in parts of North Jersey, hypodermic needles washing ashore from NYC. Interestingly, it is also where they had the lone NJ nude beach. Another unique smell, 50,000 copper-tone slathered people fighting for blanket space, on a Jersey Beach on a 98 degree 100% humidity day with no breeze; 25,000 'boom boxes' all playing something unique - how relaxing; an they paid only $2,500/week for the renting the 2 bedroom apartment; home for the week for you, and 20 of your kids closest friends. Except if you pick a week that it rains, then you sit in the same $2,500.00/week apartment, play cards, and watch and smell the mold growing on the walls, while the kids whine about something to do.

I have shared many of these Jersey memories with beth and told her they are better as memories than as first hand experience; but the truth is, I wouldn't want to miss most of those experiences. By far, what's missed most is the food! We're going back in June for my sons graduation, and every spare moment will be taking her to my favorite Italian restaurants. But we'll also have to go to get a Pizza, Hoagie, Italian ice, cannoli, calzone, soft pretzel (best if purchased from a grubby handed street vendor off  a 95 exit going into Phily), cheese steak, wings (In LA they serve wings with bean spouts!), carvel ice cream, Rita's Galatti, and anything else I won't remember until we drive by.

Hoping to even have time to take her to Seaside where this Jersey boy remembers getting; "tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades bangin' them pleasure machines. Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk where they promise to unsnap their jeans. This pier lights our carnival life on the water, I remember, Sandy girl,"

Many states have an official state bird (ours is the eastern goldfinch) state animals etc ...

we are the ONLY state to have an official state demon ;)

I live in Cape May Court House where there are roughly 3 WaWas per capita (as you know) lol. I go to school near Trenton... NO WAWAS!!!! Oh. My. God. I need my WaWa coffee... And what is with this new black cup thing? I miss the letter they used to have from Dick Wood on the back! It is scary how much I am attached to WaWa.

I actually don't mind NJ that much but then again it is the only place I've ever lived. The only thing I mind is the high price of living and the serious lack of well paying jobs but that is enough to make me want to leave

Where else can you get deepfried oreos, snickers, or twinkes, cheese fry pizza, curly fries, funnel cakes, and a variety of other artery hardening goodies? You got it - the Wildwood Board Walk. Also the home of price gouging and w-w-w-a-w-atch the t-t-t-t-t-tram c-c-c-c-carrr p-p-pl-eeeease!

OK you Jersyites… So sell me about Jersy. All I know about it is what I have seen on Cable relating the history of the Mafia Families there..

I’m dead serious folks seeing you guys are so enthusiastic about Jersey how about telling me, a dumb Aussie all about where you live? Just remember I don’t know zip about your locality and it’s been quite a while since I was Stateside with time to look about and be a Tourist…

Since you ask...

New Jersey is almost "divided" like North and South Korea...sort of, lol.  The northeastern part, outside of NYC, Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, etc. are what give the state the bad reputation.  It's industrial, old, dirty, windows are gated and barred, graffiti abounds, mafia...you get the idea.  Although there are areas they have renovated that are really nice, going from South to North Jersey is like crossing a border into another territory..

The rest of the state is actually beautiful and very diverse for such a relatively small area.  Upper Northwest is very mountainous and rocky, old towns built on hillsides.  As you get further south, there are upper class horse "farms" and elite equestrian groups.  The US Olympic Equestian team headquarters is there.

Further on south, you get into a lot of farmlands....it's called the "Garden State" for good reason.  Wonderful produce like corn and tomatoes as Aileen mentioned.  Also, we're famous for cranberry bogs and blueberries. Then you have the "Pine Barrens", home of the "Pineys", lol.  There is no socially acceptable way to describe them, other than the local jokes mention lack of teeth and an affinity with the WalMart...if you get my drift.  But I've seen bumper stickers that read "Proud to be a Piney, from my Head down to my Hiney".  The Barrens themselves are many acres of pine forests, desolate sandy areas, campgrounds and nature preserves, if you really want to "get away from it all".

Along the 90-miles shoreline are really nice beaches (except when nasty things wash up, but that's rare and makes for good sensational news that day).  Atlantic City is our "Las Vegas" that has the boardwalk and beaches instead of desert.  Many of the boardwalks have amusement parks built right out over the ocean, which is fun. Most towns do charge a fee for a "beach badge", which is annoying, but they do put the money to good use, such as paying really well-trained lifeguard crews, cleaning up the trash left behind everyday by the sun-worshippers, and rebuilding the beaches when erosion happens, as it does frequently.  There are also a lot of wetlands and nature preserves, bird sanctuaries.  There is an official nude beach in Sandy Hook, up north, and an unofficial one at the southern tip, near Cape May.  The locals keep trying to shut it down, but other locals keep showing up naked!

We are just a couple of hours from NYC and Philadelphia, Baltimore is 2-3 hours and Washington DC is 3-4 hours.  We have a pretty good public transportation system, buses & trains that can get you to just about anywhere conveniently.  It's a good place to live.  You can be on the beach, drive 1/2 an hour and be in the middle of the forest.  If you're into fishing, you can charter boats that will take you out for a day or night for tuna, swordfish or shark.  Or, there are whale-watching expeditions that go out in the spring and summer months.  What kills the states reputation is the crooked politician that seem to keep getting voted into office (NJ is highly democratic).  We have the #1 highest car insurance rates in the nation. (One time I accidently let my policy lapse, and my renewal cost me $3600 that year).  Property taxes have skyrocketed, as has the price of real estate in general, just the past 3 or 4 years.  There are people who bought beachfront property for $30K 30 or 40 years ago, who are now selling it for near or over $1million.  Wish I'd been one of them.

So....if you'd like to visit, I'll be glad to show you around!

Jerseyians are also fiercely loyal.  We may hate a lot of things about our state, but we always proudly announce that we live here.  There's a lot of garbage in our state, but it's OUR garbage.
...and the nude beach at Sandy Hook (Beach G...Gunnison) is pretty fucking wild...followed by an ice cold beer and fish and chips at Donovan's Reef in Sea Bright.

Aileen, there are TONS of little places like that all over the state.  Places that might sound dreadful when describing it, but wonderful when you experience it ;)

Like getting a fat cat from the grease trucks outside of Rutgars.

Or getting into a debate as to whether they are the "Jackson Whites" or "Ramapo Mountain People".

The wonderful duality of Seashore towns ... many are an exciting mix of vacationing families and dirt-bag townies ;) ... anyone who knows Keansburg will know what I mean.  (j/k Keansburg people)

The cold almost lonely feeling, yet wonderful meditative places in the Pine barrens.

The small little places ALL OVER the state that are Revolutionary war historical sites.

yes, it is a love-hate relationship ;)

NEW JERSEY STANDARD OF LIVING:
  • New Jersey has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the highest cigarette tax in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the second highest statewide housing costs in the nation: 73% above the national average!
  • New Jersey has the third highest cost of doing business in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the fourth highest health insurance costs in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the fifth highest amount of tax-supported debt in the nation.
  • New Jersey's overall cost of living is 32% above the national average. Why pay such a premium to live in New Jersey when you could live in a place that is both nice and has a reasonable cost of living?
  • New Jersey collects income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, sin taxes, casino taxes, tourism taxes, and highway tolls, yet the state has massive budget problems. Where the hell is all of that money going? At least I know where it is coming from: your pockets!
  • New Jersey ranks first in the nation in per-pupil spending, but its students' only achieve average reading and math scores.
  • New Jersey is the most densely populated and overcrowded state in the nation. Hope you like standing in long lines and sitting in traffic jams.
  • The Jersey shore (don't say beaches) is vastly overrated. First, you have to fight your way through traffic jams and toll booths. Next, you have to pay for parking. Then you have to pay for beach tags to use a public beach! Finally, the ocean will be murky, freezing cold, or filled with jellyfish.
  • Atlantic City will always be a cut-rate resort compared to Las Vegas.

NEW JERSEY LAWS/CRIME:
  • New Jersey has the most dangerous city in America: Camden, NJ.
  • New Jersey's answer to its high crime rates is stricter regulations, not stricter punishments.
  • New Jersey cops need to concentrate less on speeding ticket quotas and more on the high crime rates.
  • New Jersey has now banned the use of handheld cell phones while driving. However, reckless driving without a cell phone will never be discouraged.
  • New Jersey has strict gun ownership laws. Not surprisingly, most of the guns are owned and used by criminals.
  • You are not allowed to pump your own gas because New Jersey's government deems a gas pump to be too dangerous for its citizens to operate. However, it takes three times as long for a "trained" minimum-wage attendant to pump your gas than if you had pumped it yourself.
  • You are also considered a criminal if you set off a firecracker (even a sparkler!) or throw a soda can in the wrong trash bin.
  • You can't buy beer in a convenience store, yet New Jersey does nothing about its residents who drive even worse than drunk drivers!

NEW JERSEY ENVIRONMENT:
  • New Jersey has the most toxic waste sites in the nation.
  • New Jersey has the second worst air quality in the nation.
  • New Jersey is "The Garden State" all right--complete with mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, ticks, biting flies, and chiggers.
  • New Jersey is a dreary state that sorely lacks natural beauty, that is, unless you have a thing for pine trees, garbage dumps, sound walls, or urban sprawl.

NJ is also one of those places where you are equidistant from NY and Philly ... so you don't have to actually live in either ;).  BUT you can still get either a good cheese steak, or a good dirty-water dog.

You go to far south, or too far west, you can not FIND a decent Diner, Pizzaria, Begal, or Chinese take out joint.

Although, to be fair, no where North of the Mason-Dixon line can you get decent Biscuits and Gravy!

Moloch,

ALthough rife with opinion and not fact, I must agree with MOST of your statememnts!  Here is where I diverge:

"New Jersey ranks first in the nation in per-pupil spending, but its students' only achieve average reading and math scores."
-actually, to make matters worse, we do NOT spend the most per student.  We put the most of our property taxes (by percentage) towards education, BUT PER STUDENT we only spend about average .... i.e somewhere in the middle of all 50 states.  The rest goes to administrative costs (don't get me started down THAT road!)

lol, okay, the next two I will speak UP for NJ ;)

"New Jersey is a dreary state that sorely lacks natural beauty, that is, unless you have a thing for pine trees, garbage dumps, sound walls, or urban sprawl."
- NJ has a lot of sprawl and garbage, it's true.  But we also have highpoint st park, Stokes st, forest (both decidious) Duke Gardens,, and more horses than Kentucky.  Not to mention Cranberry bogs (we produce more Cranberries than any other state) a LOTS of wonderfully wild and natural places.  And I kinda like the pine barrens :)

"You are not allowed to pump your own gas because New Jersey's government deems a gas pump to be too dangerous for its citizens to operate. However, it takes three times as long for a "trained" minimum-wage attendant to pump your gas than if you had pumped it yourself."
- Having traveled outside of NJ to statesz where you pump your own, unless you are using a credit card, it actually takes longer to shuffle back and forth from the booth to the pump etc, and can be a real drag in the rain.  It's kinda nice to have the attendent do it, and gas is STILL cheaper here (marginally) than other states.
