Since you ask... New Jersey is almost "divided" like North and South Korea...sort of, lol. The northeastern part, outside of NYC, Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, etc. are what give the state the bad reputation. It's industrial, old, dirty, windows are gated and barred, graffiti abounds, mafia...you get the idea. Although there are areas they have renovated that are really nice, going from South to North Jersey is like crossing a border into another territory.. The rest of the state is actually beautiful and very diverse for such a relatively small area. Upper Northwest is very mountainous and rocky, old towns built on hillsides. As you get further south, there are upper class horse "farms" and elite equestrian groups. The US Olympic Equestian team headquarters is there. Further on south, you get into a lot of farmlands....it's called the "Garden State" for good reason. Wonderful produce like corn and tomatoes as Aileen mentioned. Also, we're famous for cranberry bogs and blueberries. Then you have the "Pine Barrens", home of the "Pineys", lol. There is no socially acceptable way to describe them, other than the local jokes mention lack of teeth and an affinity with the WalMart...if you get my drift. But I've seen bumper stickers that read "Proud to be a Piney, from my Head down to my Hiney". The Barrens themselves are many acres of pine forests, desolate sandy areas, campgrounds and nature preserves, if you really want to "get away from it all". Along the 90-miles shoreline are really nice beaches (except when nasty things wash up, but that's rare and makes for good sensational news that day). Atlantic City is our "Las Vegas" that has the boardwalk and beaches instead of desert. Many of the boardwalks have amusement parks built right out over the ocean, which is fun. Most towns do charge a fee for a "beach badge", which is annoying, but they do put the money to good use, such as paying really well-trained lifeguard crews, cleaning up the trash left behind everyday by the sun-worshippers, and rebuilding the beaches when erosion happens, as it does frequently. There are also a lot of wetlands and nature preserves, bird sanctuaries. There is an official nude beach in Sandy Hook, up north, and an unofficial one at the southern tip, near Cape May. The locals keep trying to shut it down, but other locals keep showing up naked! We are just a couple of hours from NYC and Philadelphia, Baltimore is 2-3 hours and Washington DC is 3-4 hours. We have a pretty good public transportation system, buses & trains that can get you to just about anywhere conveniently. It's a good place to live. You can be on the beach, drive 1/2 an hour and be in the middle of the forest. If you're into fishing, you can charter boats that will take you out for a day or night for tuna, swordfish or shark. Or, there are whale-watching expeditions that go out in the spring and summer months. What kills the states reputation is the crooked politician that seem to keep getting voted into office (NJ is highly democratic). We have the #1 highest car insurance rates in the nation. (One time I accidently let my policy lapse, and my renewal cost me $3600 that year). Property taxes have skyrocketed, as has the price of real estate in general, just the past 3 or 4 years. There are people who bought beachfront property for $30K 30 or 40 years ago, who are now selling it for near or over $1million. Wish I'd been one of them. So....if you'd like to visit, I'll be glad to show you around!
