ORIGINAL: lally2 the question really is - why? - why do people need to eat like that. You know we can discuss how it's the fault of individual people and groups of people till the cows come home but I also believe that the reasons go beyond people and have become part of commonly accepted social and cultural values. It's exactly the same with drinking. You could ask why do people need to drink like that? I mean, you go somewhere like Bombay, Calcutta or Islamabad on a Friday or Saturday at closing time you don't see thousands of pissed Pakistanis staggering through the streets vomiting up fish and chips and pork pies do you? Excess is socially and culturally acceptable throughout the West. I mean go through any town centre on a Friday or Saturday night you could be forgiven for thinking that Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization for people who prefer supermarket own brand spirits and drinks. Have you ever seen some of the obscure labels supermarket chains think up for their own label of drinks like whisky and vodka? Lord Turpentine, The Laird's Creosote, Gerrimoff vodka, Hard Sailor's Rum, etc. Or even 'white' cider or beer? White Ace? Shitfaced 8%? Premium Dutch Headbangers' Lager, Coalminer's Extra Strong Bitter, Glaswegian Export. Take any major holiday, Christmas, Easter, (or even Thanksgiving), and what is the focus of that holiday? People getting together around food, stuffing themselves with all sorts of food and then getting pissed up on alcohol.; Walk into any supermarket from October and it starts with a few stray jars of mincemeat, dried fruit and by the end of November you have the whole caboodle - the turkey, the veggies, the potatoes, the mince pies, the Christmas cake, the Yule logs, the crisps, nuts, nibbles, snacks, Christmas pudding, selection boxes, chocolate, sweets and so on and so forth. People get themselves into serious debt, for what? To buy all the food, alcohol, presents, etc. Many of them are people who would barely fill one supermarket trolley on a regular weekly shop but come December they pile all sorts of crap into that trolley, or trolleys and even have trouble pushing them out to the car park. I've worked with homeless charities at day centres and night shelters and have organized food banks and handouts. Sandwich bars, caterers and bakeries were among the favourite people to deal with, the worst and the meanest are the large supermarket chains which every day throw out literally tons of food, a lot of it really healthy nutritious food which could actually feed a lot of poor people. And it makes you wonder if they're throwing out so much healthy, nutritious food then why don't they sell it much cheaper so that it doesn't get thrown out? Like it or not excessive eating and drinking are part of our culture and society and we can blame fat people all we like, we can blame irresponsible parents all we like, but I feel that we all share at least some of the responsibility in accepting a culture and society which encourages excessive food and alcohol consumption, so much food wastage, not to mention all the money spent in dealing with problems caused by excessive eating and drinking.
