ORIGINAL: domiguy Oh Master Red, please teach me how to be nice. I don't know if I'm nice. I doubt Reynardfox or auditguy think I am, and they're probably right. I can offer an explanation of how I think about things: I don't see human behavior as good or bad, right or wrong. I see it as successful at reaching objectives, or failing to reach objectives. My ethics come in with the objectives I choose to set for myself -- but I don't have strong emotional reactions to topics of conversation. (You remember the bestiality thread for example, when half the posts were just people saying, "Ick." The mods could have allowed images to be shown, and I still wouldn't have felt grossed out.) My point is this: if someone says something contrary to reality, I don't think of it like, "You're a LIAR," or "You're WRONG." I think there was some reason the person expressed that opinion, and I try to assess what that reason was, with no emotional stigma. Just the facts. I've found if I just say facts, and leave moralism and editorializing out of it, that people I criticize might be really pissed at what I say, but they'll almost never tell me to fuck off, because my clinical handling of the situation took that weapon off the table.
