It's been raining over the last couple of days in London.

Last night I was almost wiped out by a woman speeding in her 4WD whilst chatting on her mobile phone.

This morning at a bus stop we get a couple of idiots driving through puddles in the road soaking me and the other passengers.

I say enough of this.

I say if you break any highway rule or any traffic regulation then you should forfeit both your driving licence and car. End of.

What say you?

pegbundy -> RE: bad drivers (5/2/2010 2:00:24 AM)

Wow, that's harsh. What say we just shoot them instead? lol

LadyEllen -> RE: bad drivers (5/2/2010 2:02:23 AM)

I say we stop handing out driving licences to anyone who cant pass 5 GCSEs including English, Maths, a science and a foreign language at C or above. Watch the school results improve.

I say that on passing a driving test one should drive on Probation plates for 5 years and be limited for that period to an engine 1100cc or below. I say that if you want to drive at night or on motorways, you do a practical test to show you can. They have this in Northern Ireland I believe and its cut down on injuries and deaths markedly.

I also say that we're all different. I promise you I can do things whilst driving that are considered dangerous these days, and no one will come to any harm. Our biggest problem in this country is that we make laws according to the most stupid and inconsiderate amongst us, so that no idiot gets left behind and all may have prizes.

PUH-LEEEEZE.....I think this is a worldwide problem!  Since I've moved here to FLorida, I have discovered that for some unknown reason, people can't keep the rubber on the pavement....literally, we handle an average of 4 rollover accidents a day here.....and that's just in Jacksonville. Fortunately, most of the people are wearing their seatbelts, so they manage to survive some of the most horrific looking accidents, trust me, I've seen pictures!  Just Saturday night, we had two peple killed for sure, with several left in critical condition.

Honestly, I don't know what can be done to improve the driving here.....I know from spending time in Germany 20 years ago, that getting a driver's license there involved going to a driving school for a year, (I think it was ayear, anyway) before a kid could even get a license.  I spent two years in Germany, and traveling throught Europe, and the whole time I was there, I saw a total of 5, only 5, accidents.....of course, they were on the Autobahn, so there were fatalities, and usually at least one vehicle immolated, but they drove 1000 times better than Americans did!  The only place I was ever scared in traffic was when we went to Paris...and we were in a tour bus!  Those people there are nuts behind the wheel!  But if I had my choice, I'd much rather drive in Europe than here.

My pet peeve is idiots who are on their cell phones while driving.....then there's the woman putting on her make up in traffic, the folks trying to eat a full course breakfast, the nut reading the newspaper on his steering wheel as he's driving in traffic....INTERSTATE traffic in rush hour Chicago.......he had coffee in one hand, a bagel in the other and he was steering with his knees.  Karma caught up with him tho.....the jerk almost ran me into the wall, but a mile or so down the road, we had to stop quick in traffic, and he dropped the coffee in his lap.....I hope it burned his balls off.....jackass!

I've gotten so tired of taking my life into my hands that I don't hit the interstates much more around here....if I can take surface streets, I'll do that first.  I still love to drive, and I love road trips, but I drive like everyone else is on their cell phone, eating lunch, and doesn't have the first clue.  And I've gotten in the habit of waiting at a green light, because 9 times out of 10, there is an idiot that is going to run the red on their side.  These days, there are more people than ever that aren't carrying insurance, so if I get hit, it's all coming out of MY pocket.......better safe than sorry!

i agree...enough already!!

I have nearly been creamed by a few fools who have been more interested in their conversation than in the car they were responsible for controlling.
And, i must admit, i was once one of those fools. Now the phones ringer is not on when i am in the car...and i like it that way.

Since when is driving through a puddle a crime?

Its called "driving without care and attention" Loki - having no regard for other road users, which includes pedestrians.

all they have to do is slow down to lessen the splashing.....

LadyEllen -> RE: bad drivers (5/2/2010 6:05:56 AM)

Exactly SH - they should slow and if possible avoid the puddles in order to avoid soaking the pedestrian (or theoretically the horse). That they do not means that they are driving without due care and attention. That some find it funny to soak others in this way and do so deliberately may invite charges of assault and battery on top.

In reality though the driver is usually long gone by the time the victim is soaked and the police are singularly disinterested in such complaints. Thus one may soak with impunity, as long as it isnt a cop on the receiving end.

Does anyone remember the movie with Michael Douglas in big black nerd glasses, and a severe case of road rage? I got the image of him opening his car door right as the motorcyclist rode by him between the cars [:D] as i read this thread.

DesFIP -> RE: bad drivers (5/2/2010 6:21:30 AM)

If when they resurfaced the road they would pay attention to making sure it drains near bus stops then people wouldn't be faced with a choice of suddenly slowing and then getting rear ended or soaking others. Because the guy behind you tailgating in bad weather will hit you when you slow up.

And that's my pet peeve, tailgaters. If you sit on my tail, expect me to slow to 20mph because you'll do a lot less damage to me at 20 than at 60.

Yeah....we don't have that "crime" here. If we did, no one in any major city would be able to drive.

Besides that, I'm with DesFIP. The 'dryness' of a pedestrian is my last concern while operating a vehicle in inclement whether. If it's truly that big an issue....stand further away from the street. Most bus stops here have little booths you sit in (or can hide behind when it rains). But I'm not about to risk getting rear-ended or swerving into the path of another car just because you want to stay dry (especially since if you truly wanted to stay dry, you'd not be standing outside in the rain the first place).

Yeah, those are fun. Usually I just "tap" my brakes enough to make them slow down. But one time....I thought a little more was needed. A pseudo-confrontation with the driver of a sports car ensued and...near as I can tell...I won.

Oh how I soooooo want to say something, but I am not going to say a word, nope not going to do it, I'm not saying a word! *goes back to my corner & keeps my mouth shut*

Just how I like my women. [;)]

GreedyTop -> RE: bad drivers (5/2/2010 7:23:46 AM)

Lauri.. I bet you and I could trade some stories of idiots vs big trucks (I drove OTR for over 20 yrs... trucks AND buses)....

like the broad in the new corvette who evidently didn't think the "left lane ends ahead" applied to her... or the guy twisted sideways in the drivers seat, steering with his knees while he worked on his laptop... or the woman I overheard in a truckstop restaurant saying (in all seriousness) "of course trucks can stop faster! they have 18 brakes!"

Don't forget the chicks who put on pantyhose while they drive.

unfortunately, common courtesy is not a prerequisite for having a drivers license. If it was Loki, you would be using mass transit and having some jackass of a motorist not care that they splash you because" if you truly wanted to stay dry, you'd not be standing outside in the rain the first place"

You involved in a road incident,  boy that's a surprise.
