Loki you win

Don't feel bad. That usually happens one way or another.

Loki, so you're proud of yourself for "winning"? All that happened was she showed enough class to walk away from a disagreement she saw no point in continuing. Admittedly, I don't know either or you. But from what I've read here, LadiTrukDriver made some valid points and you pretty much threw a temper tantrum.

I didn't see her saying that all truck drivers are good and all others are bad. She pointed out some things which we in our cars and SUVs do on a regular basis which put everyone's safety at risk. She mentioned that we don't tend to show much respect to those in her profession. Of course there are people who have it worse than her in the world. That is a silly argument. And one that does not take away her right to talk about what she sees and experiences.

I've just reread the whole thread, trying to find where you had made a valid point in rebuttal. Couldn't find any. Did I miss it maybe?

Naah, with that comment, I'm just being an ass. I don't see what I do as a win/lose proposition. You see winning a "debate" on a message board is like winning in the special olympics. At the end of the day, you're still retarded.

I don't set out to "win" anything online. I simply set out to hold a dark mirror up to others and show them the ridiculousness of the things they say. To do that, I often have to take opposite and equally ridiculous sides.

She made some whiny posts (which you called valid points vs. my 'temper tantrum'...we'll just circle back to that). In response to her whiny posts, I made some posts which shot holes in her "valid points" (such as the ludicrous acronym for "yield" which isn't a "fact" as she claimed it was.

Yes, but it takes away from the class of such an act when you've already been involved in the fracas, don't you think? They say "It takes a bigger person to walk away from a fight" yet you can't claim to be the "bigger person" if both of you already have bloody noses from throwing and taking punches, now can you?

But from what I've read here, LadiTrukDriver made some valid points and you pretty much threw a temper tantrum.

Now we circle back to this little gem. Her points were not all that valid. Some were her opinion, some were half-truths and some were out-right wrong. Even when Greedy tried to help, she only made it worse. You see, I've done a fair amount of freeway driving just today since this little 'debate' began. And not once, on ANY freeway I was on, did I see a "yield" sign on the ON-ramp. I saw at least *2* per OFF-ramp, but none on the on-ramps.

The rest of her "valid points" as you put it was her own "temper tantrum" from being a frustrated truck driver. To which I counter-pointed that stupid drivers drive ANY type of vehicle and that it does no good to whine about one and not the others (as several past threads and posts on this site have attempted to do). Also, throwing out the bit about truckers missing their families was a nice touch, or would have been, had there not been whole groups of people who go through the same shit or worse.

Of course it doesn't. Just like her posts don't take away my right to talk about what *I* have seen that is contrary to what she has seen and to point out the flaws in her logic. Ahhhh the First Amendment....ain't it grand? :)

It would certainly seem so. However, considering your screen name, I can't say I'm surprised. Your namesake was the single most dim-witted, whiny, annoying gash on television. So, assuming you took that name for a reason, I am certainly not a bit surprised that you missed my valid points. It's likely also due to the whole "sisterhood" thing. You see a female poster arguing with a male poster and you immediately jump to her defense against me -- the big, bad man.

It's a common enough occurrence, especially in our society. I personally couldn't give a fuck....so don't let it get you down.

I have seen brushing your teeth and flossing, i have seen eating, reading the newspaper, being on the computer. How exactly is the brain wired to do these things and drive a 5,000 lb. plus automobile?

The only time I use my cell phone if i am parked in a parking lot or at a stop light, a long stop light.

I think people need to slow down. be more organized in their lives, pay attention because the life you save might be your own. Consideration & Care seems to have died a long time ago.

Thank you, Loki, for this cogent response. As I read it this morning, I was actually beginning to have some respect for your viewpoint and your ability to communicate it. Until, that is, I reached your final paragraph. I've found that people who have a valid and defensible point in a disagreement tend to stick to that point. On the other hand, people who have no leg to stand on have a tendency to resort to insults. Am I supposed to go cry into my pillow now because you've implied that I am whiny and dimwitted? I'm gonna get right on that.

Now THAT is funny.

Just a few points of interest Id like to share with the crowd.

They may or may not be relevant to the US or UK.

Truck drivers re educate at least every 2 years in a few area's, driving skills, occupational health and safety, hazard identification and prevention, Defensive driving and situation control.

Bus and passenger drivers have to have a DC or drivers certificate and if they operate in areas of snow or ice they need a hazardous condition's ticket and driving test to be retested every year.

Hazmat or hazardous materials testing for any large quantities of hazardous materials with a 12 month retest mandated.

And on the back of most large fleet vehicles is a free call number if you dont like the truckies driving.

Ive been license tested 8 times since I got my license at 18, I also had to learn to drive to the letter of the law when I recertified as a driver trainer which was bloody hard considering ive been driving all sorts of vehicles for 26 odd years.

Truckies have restrictions on how many hours total they can drive, the amount of time between shifts, mandated time off per 38 hours.
They also have 100 kph (62Mph) limited heavy vehicles and what we call Safe T Cams logging our every movement on the interstate, the Safe T Cams measure time elapsed and can and do send infringements for log book hours violations and speeding point to point.

We are also taught many skills car and bike riders are not (And remember I teach this) such as forward observation and elements of the Hendon system of driving which is used in the UK and Australia for training emergency vehicle drivers such as cops, ambo's and fireies.

Car drivers get their licenses and dont have to do a damned thing for as long as 60 years, no re education, no skills upgrades and bugger all checks and balances in place to weed out the bad from the good and the truly dangerous.

You can be 55, legally blind and suffer from grand mal epileptic seizures and blackouts and STILL posess the legal right to operate a motor vehicle.

If you drive a truck youd wash out in 12 months if your OH&S or fleet manager didnt catch you out first.

Not ideal but I cant see a truckie piloting a 72 ton rig around with medical issues anyway.

Ive also driven for a living, 5 trips a week totalling over 10'000 km, week in and week out and I can categorically state that a lot of motorists are absolute tools when it comes to sharing the roads with heavy vehicles.

Sure there are cowboy truckies but they are outnumbered by idiot car drivers by a huge margin.

In your opinion I gather....

Id suggest you have another look at the series.

Al is the dim witted character and the kids are not far behind, Peg is actually the brains trust of the family and her character seems to be smart and well written enough to have fooled even you.

And yes, Australia gets almost ALL the US sitcoms and drama series, cartoons etc.

And I thought we were Bubba Bush's friends too.

I was just starting to pass a semi on rural 101 in CA when the trailer's left rear outboard tire blew.  I thought I was going to have to change my underwear.  Tread flew by all around me but nothing hit.

I'd sprained my rotator cuff a few weeks earlier, and wrenched it again cranking the steering wheel so fast to get out of the way.  Major owie.

No.. the yield signs are on the ON RAMPS.

Really? In what state? Because it isn't in this one. I've NEVER seen a yield sign on an on-ramp. Only on off-ramps. If you don't believe me, go to google maps and pick a highway, then use that little yellow man icon to go to street view and see if there are yield signs.

quote:

ORIGINAL: GreedyTop
The idea is that the on-ramp is for people to get up to a matching speed for the road they are merging on to..

And if they slow down on the on-ramp....how does that help them match the speed of the road they're getting onto?

No yield signs on the on ramps?  Come to Ohio.  And I've seen them in California.

I swear fervently at idiots who stop at the end of on-ramps; I've seen folks do this even when there is hardly any traffic in the right-most lane.

No one with uncontrolled seizures can drive in the US, as far as I know.  A physician is obligated to report that to the state's license bureau.  Same goes for legally blind.

The problem with vision and ability needs to be caught with frequent testing as you grow older.

My dad was banned for 6 months after he fainted due to cardiac arrest (his defibrillator saved his life).  Holly (here on the boards) is banned for 6 weeks (I think) since an accident at home left her unconcious for a short time and gave her a small brain bleed.

Texas doesn't have them, neither does Oklahoma. It's been quite a few years since I've been to Cali or (through) Ohio, so I have no idea. But around here, the signs are strictly for the off-ramps to tell those on the service road they have to yield to the ramp traffic.

Oh I swear, swerve and squeal my tires purposely so they know they are being stupid. People say you should always drive defensively, but it's my firm belief that the best defense is a good offense. And that's how I drive.

California doesn't need yield signs at on ramps. Freeway traffic has the right of way.

Enter the freeway at or near the speed of traffic. (Remember that the maximum speed allowed is 65 mph on most freeways.) Do not stop before merging into freeway traffic unless absolutely necessary. Freeway traffic has the right-of-way.

ETA- looked it up for the hell of it. Seems that some places (in different states) have them and some don't:
quote:

QUESTION: I have been told by the Iowa State Patrol that the traffic on a street, highway or interstate has the right-of-way to traffic coming onto those roads. Why then do some on-ramps have yield signs and some do not? Answer: Vehicles entering a street from an on-ramp yield the right-of-way to vehicles on the road; it's a state law.The majority of the newer on-ramps don't have yield signs, while older on-ramps do have them because they were placed on the ramps years ago.

There there Loki, im sure the thought has made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Thing is that Peg always wins, always gets her way, always gets the cash, doesnt cook, clean or do housework and manages to look hot as hell in a white trashy way that appeals to me and still loves her man enough to have to nail him down for sex when she wants it.

If she traded her leopard skin tights for leather pants and a quirt then id consider turning switch just to get me some. (Dont do the visual)

This IMO makes her smart, maybe not book smart or degree smart but she is a survivor and a shizz load smarter than her co inhabitants.

That doesn't make her not a dimwit. That just shows when the anti-male rise began in TV progams. After that show, shows like Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and others had women physically abusing men "for laughs" when everyone knows that if the situation was reversed, people would boycott the show.

Pumpy is incorrect about driving while legally blind. I put off my second cataract operation until he said either I schedule it or he would pull my license. Of course I still have no night vision and drive only in daylight.
