Pumpy is incorrect about driving while legally blind. I put off my second cataract operation until he said either I schedule it or he would pull my license. Of course I still have no night vision and drive only in daylight.

Actually im never wrong and I was commenting on Australia, not the US.

That said I have a good friend in Colorado who has night blindness and she has no restrictions on her license but has the good sense to not drive at night or in snow or low light.

Im tempted to try and bridge some of the cultural divide between the US and Australia by starting a thread to debunk some common misconceptions.

Did the same on another site for the Pomgolians and it was very interesting and well received.

I also promise to say "Crikey!" a fair bit lol

This is certainly good to know!

And I do think that a well placed "crikey" here and there might help to keep us mindful of the perspective from which you speak.

In re the point of driving while legally blind, I know that my grandfather was permitted to continue driving for many, many years in spite of his being legally blind. His license was renewed several times, his doctor apparently didn't care enough to do anything about it, and his children were too weak to stand up to him and take away his keys. I am certain he's not the only one. There is nothing in our laws or procedures to effectively prevent it.

This bastard takes the award for bad driving......gets on the interstate the going the wrong way, and instead of pulling over and turning around, proceeds to speed to the next exit, but instead, hits another vehicle head on, ejecting all 3 occupants, killing the infant child on the scene, and sending both parents to a trauma hospital.  The guy's license was expired, and I haven't heard if he was drunk, but 99% of the wrong way drivers here are.....I hope he rots in hell...he was arrested at the hospital.  This all took place on Mother's day......

I felt totally awful having to send a trooper to the hospital to tell the parents their baby was dead.....I know firsthand how he felt....it's always been my belief that the bastard responsible for the death should have to be the one to tell the family that he was responsible.

We've got those in spades here. They're usually drunk one HILARIOUS wreck was with one of those. I say hilarious because the moron was going the wrong way, drunk of course, and was miraculously stopped by police. However, when they got out of their car, he took off again (still going the wrong way) right into diesel truck. The truck driver was shaken, but not hurt and the drunk and his car were unrecognizable.

Unfortunately, with all the wrong-way drunken wrecks we've had here....that's the only one that had a favorable outcome.

Unless you've driven all freeways/toll roads in all the states, how can you say that yield signs don't exist on freeways?

No yield signs on the on ramps?  Come to Ohio.  And I've seen them in California.

Texas doesn't have them, neither does Oklahoma. It's been quite a few years since I've been to Cali or (through) Ohio, so I have no idea. But around here, the signs are strictly for the off-ramps to tell those on the service road they have to yield to the ramp traffic.

I swear fervently at idiots who stop at the end of on-ramps; I've seen folks do this even when there is hardly any traffic in the right-most lane.

Oh I swear, swerve and squeal my tires purposely so they know they are being stupid. People say you should always drive defensively, but it's my firm belief that the best defense is a good offense. And that's how I drive.

Simple. If you'll notice, I never said "all states" or "all freeways." I said the ones in Texas and Oklahoma. I'm not sure about other states because my traveling days ended 7 years ago. However, I frequently drive quite a bit in Texas and Oklahoma and there are no yield signs on the on-ramps here.

However, if you really want to look for yourself, google maps has this nifty "street view" feature where you can see whether there are signs on the on-ramps or not. I'm sure you can see quite a few freeways in quite a few states that way. Have at it.

But when you do, you should know that since you specifically mentioned Ohio....I just checked a few of those on-ramps. The ones I saw didn't have yield signs either.

There are many in Pa who think a yield sign is simply a three sided stop sign...and I manage to be behind them on every freakin ramp.

I posted a  link to a thread that contained a pic of an Ohio on ramp in this very thread, showing the location of the yield sign. I'm from Ohio, my brother is a police officer there. Some Ohio on ramps do have yield signs. That said, I also posted a link to an article that talks about how older ramps in Iowa have yield signs, while newer ones tend not to.
