1. I would probably have written back and thanked them for the compliment and mentioned that it was somewhat unethical to post my words as their own without any reference to me. I would probably not have asked them to remove it. Most people's profiles and journals could benefit from a few passages written by me.

So essentially, you would have handled it like I did.

This happens with bloggers all the time. Generally, the etiquette is to ask permission first, which is usually granted on the condition that the post be credited and linked back to the original blog. That said, of course stuff gets stolen, which is why copyscape exists.

For a profile, though? I'd have just said no.

Actually with bloggers, as long as they post the permalink, you'll get a trackback. That isn't an issue. And yes, I've had my blog posts ripped and posted on other Websites but those sites have little repute.

I do think that this is slightly different because it is happening within a community. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but for some reason, it is irritating me more.

No to what? Sorry, I miss what this is referring to.

Plagarism is endemic on the internet, in all fields. If someone has fliched your work and failed to show you the respect due to you, then they are obviously not in your league and are beneath contempt. Don't get worked up, that never did anyone any good. You have already admirably expressed your disapproval in front of this whole community. Punishment has already been delivered.
Show them the disdain they deserve and just turn your back on them.
They are unworthy of your attention.
Ignore them.
That's what I always do, and I've had work pinched ad nauseam from other sites.

sravaka -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 7:53:51 PM)

I'd be 1) startled 2) flattered 3) amused. No one who quotes me actually writes like me, so I trust that the plagiarism would be transparent. (this is what typically happens with students-- you can spot their pilferings from miles away). And if it weren't? Ideas flourish through propagation and I only care if those are stolen when I've invested some quantity of serious research in coming up with them. In the case of universally accessible truths arrived at through simple contemplation? (the sort of thing discussed in places like this) I'd only want credit for some indispensibly awesome articulation of them.

Summary: I think you're a little too into yourself, LA.

UPDATE: She wrote:

sorry did not think u'd mind as it is the sentiment I was after which is why I changed it and only used a few sentances.

And removed the post. I still don't think she realized she did anything wrong.

It irritates you because someone is taking your intelectual property and using it to attract people into some kind of relationship.

They are misrepresenting your thoughts as their own in order to snag some one.

Or... I could be wrong

Exactly. And apparently, that makes me full of myself as sravaka put it. Oh, and update #2 (I had to ask her again to take it down as she didn't immediately) the woman wrote back:

it was done a while ago........now please do not ocontact Me again...as usual all you "Dommes" are just petty women with no social skills...

Special, isn't it. She steals from me and I'm the one with no social skills. Comedy!

SweetDommes -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:10:36 PM)

Wow, I'm sure that the twit has you blocked at this point, but seriously - I'd write back with one line "pot, meet kettle." I was under the impression from your first post that the woman in question was also a "Domme", so apparently she's including herself in the class of petty women without social skills. At least she has herself classed right.

I'd have done just about the same thing as you LA - and I have done that before, with regards to my pictures and the profile that Holly and I have worked on. We're the ones who took the pictures, we're the ones who thought out and articulated the profile and journal entries ... we deserve credit for such.

barelynangel -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:13:04 PM)

I have people constantly asking to copy my posts and when my profile was up things in my profile etc on other websites. Its funny, usually i tell them fine no problem as long as i know where, who, and why, and they assure me they will give me credit. I tell them its not necessary. If they wish to that's fine but to me this is a message board and we are all anonymous here, so i feel flattered people want to use my ideas and such and ask to C&P my posts, but i never really demand credit. However, i will and do become irritated when they don't ask. I at least like to know where my words are ending up lol. Its freaky when you come unexpectedly across your own words or recently i came across someone on myspace directing people to look up my posts regarding enslavement lol. That was freaky cause i have no clue who this person is.

Now when my writing gets published under my actual name etc, then i may feel differently, however, here i am an anonymous nickname on a message board.

sravaka -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:15:23 PM)

That's my whole point. If they are using foreign thoughts to "snag" someone... it will backfire and the perpetrator will be left unable to explain why her actual thoughts/demeanor/whatever is so at odds with whatever sparkling bits of brilliance she pilfered. The joke will be on her.

I'm glad the plagiarism was resolved.... but again? Some internet dimwit's feeble jibes shouldn't faze you. Be above it. It's way domlier.

SweetDommes -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:15:32 PM)

Yeah, but 1 - some of us post under some form of our own names, and 2 - it's a lot easier to connect an "anonymous nickname on a message board" to the real you than most people think. *shrugs* people should always admit when they are using someone else's words, IMO.

LovingNcruelMs -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:15:52 PM)

since this whole thread began because Me, I might as well chime in .

First, despite Ms. LA's ridiculousness about being quotedin a JOURNAL entry......she has failed to mention that I edited out ALOT of what she herself wrote and IMHO kept only the sentiment behind her words, which I found clearly echoed My thoughts on the need to know one's submissive as intimately as the back of ones hands if one is to really get int othe submissives head and soul.

instead of being flattered as I would have been, and have been when others have found My words interesting enough to share with others, I get this ridiculous .." how could you? email." with this command to remove it ...OR WHAT????

you won't like Me? boohoo hoo..what will I do if you dislike Me?

you'll write a thread about it LA? geeshh!!! grow up.

women like LA .... who if you read her profile and journals, sounds intelligent...until you get to the 99th paragraph of her "explanantions" you realize probably has WAY too much time on her hands and should probably spend more time Domming and less time online fantasizing.

I approached you respectfully, complimented you on what you'd said and if you wanted me to Quote you and give you credit there were many more polite ways to go about it.

But what do your legs look like?

SweetDommes -> RE: Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery? (5/2/2010 8:20:04 PM)

She was flattered that you felt what she had to say was worth sharing with others - but to take her thoughts and words and present them as your own? That's called "Plagarism" - you might want to look it up. It can get you into some serious trouble if you do so at the wrong time. If it's not your words, at least put a disclaimer such as "I saw this and it really spoke to me so I wanted to share."

Oh, and FYI - even if you paraphrase, it is plagarism if you don't credit the source in some manner

Actually, I just posted her a link to this thread prefaced with "Comedy!

He's an instructional post for you"

I don't think that I deserve anything. I just get discouraged at times at the lack of respect people have. And I realise it is pointless to dwell over.

If it's your words, you took the effort to think about them and write them to make your meaning clear - then you deserve credit for having done so. Everyone does.
