This is not a rant, though I will admit I'm more than slightly annoyed. I'm simply wanting to know what you would have done in a similar situation.

A woman wrote to me today saying that she enjoyed one of my posts so she decided to put it in her journal. Yes, ok, it was flattering, as it always is, when someone gives you a compliment. But then I realised when clicking to see her profile that she had pasted my whole entire post as her own in her profile without any reference to me.

Alright, so when you write stuff on the internet, prepare to have it stolen. I have been pointed to bits of my posts other Dommes Websites or professional profile and I never really bothered to make an issue of it because what is the point.

However this woman actually wrote to me:

I hope u do not not mind but you verbalized it so well I borrowed a bit of one of your journal entries regarding a D/s connection.

Now what I'm realizing is that this woman must not have a clue that what she did was wrong. That is pretty evident. I wrote back:

While I am flattered that you liked my post, I find it unethical that you have stolen my words and have posted them as your own. Had you quoted me, that would have been one thing, but to post them there as your own reflection, very uncool.

I'll ask once. Please remove it.

FYI - I checked and in the options to report a blog post, there is no "plagiarism" option.

I am still awaiting her response but this happened much earlier today and I guess it's still ticking me off a little. It shouldn't, I know, but it is.

So my questions are:
- How would you have handled the situation?
- How would you handle the situation now given the potential outcomes?
- What is your opinion on the whole situation?
- Not that I'm going to ask CM to add a feature, but hypothetically, since we have stolen photos, should we not have stolen text?

- LA

I wouldn't have told her that she stole my words, because, as you say, she might not grasp what she did (which does not speak well of her intelligence), but hell yes, I would have said something.

I would report it to support. The fact that they don't have a report blog post button doesn't mean they'll approve of it. And if she doesn't understand why she shouldn't have done it, having it removed will teach her that whether or not she gets it, it still isn't allowed.

I tend to call a spade a spade. She's 41. If she has a secondary school degree, she would know what plagiarism is. The words could have been much harder... my first draft was.

Well I'll give her 48 hours to respond to my email. Then if she doesn't remove it of her own accord, I will send a message. I just know support is busy and I'd rather resolve this between us before escalating.

I disagree, Level, that's exactly what she did.  She took LadyA's words and put them in her profile anddidn't give credit, that's stealing the words.

I do however agree that it should be reported.

I would have let it go and not worried about it, although I might have put [THE ORIGINAL] after my own blog post, just to clue in that very rare soul who (a) reads journals and (b) has seen both yours and hers. I've had a lot of words "stolen" from me over the decades, mostly via the Internet. I don't remember when it happened but one day I just said screw it, I'm sick and tired of persecuting, threatening, going through legal channels, etc. just to get something they removed. If they want the words that badly, fine, they can have them. Some of them even took my photos which I found far more amusing, imagining the confusion it would cause in those who are easily confused.

zephy, I didn't say she didn't steal them, I said she might not realize that's what happened. She may be dense, saw something LA wrote that really clicked with her, and just thought, "Oooooh, that's what I want others to know!".

Hell, she even told her that she was putting it on her profile.

Having said all that.... you thieving cunt!!! Take LA's shit off your profile, you brain-dead hack!

LA, does she have hawt legs, too?

My entry is dated April 28th and hers May 2nd. I don't need to put "the original".

Yeah, me too. One of the most prevalent is a thread I started here with MaitresseEden about how to approach a dominant woman. A man I know sent me links to ProDomme sites that had pasted it and signed it as their words. I let it go as it wasn't worth the energy.

Here I have the opportunity I believe to explain to someone (I can't believe I have to, but apparently I do) that using someone else's words as yours is wrong.

The only time I ever did this is when someone wrote to me telling me a man had used my legs as his profile pic. I must admit, I did rip that poor idiot a new one.

I understand LA that you are rather upset. I would as well, I have had several profiles on other sites copy and pasted from my own profile and placed in another. I simply take it as flattery with the understanding, that eventually the truth will come out that these words are not their own. Id rather them dig their own grave and simply rewrite my own. Theres always better wording or description or otherwise explanation that could be had as one writes.

While she has stolen from you shes doing herself more harm then good, and it will eventually come back to her. You in the mean time have a time stamp either via the forum or via the journal, that proves you are the original writer or at least the person that posted it first.

Report it to support - oh you're so funny! Pass me some of whatever you're smoking/drinking/injecting! Like THAT will accomplish anything! It's like Jim Morrison said: "You cannot petition the lord with prayer!".

But hey, good luck with that - let me know how it works out for you.

Report it to support - almost made some Pepsi come out my nose with that one!

And as for the legs, do you really need to look at any other legs, darling? ;-)

Hmm, about the legs... as a guy, I do seem to have that need, yes , but finding them as nice as yours, that is a tough task.

So my questions are:
- How would you have handled the situation?

When my profile was visable and I had quite a few journal entries, I had a female dominant contact me to say she liked something I had written which, to be honest, I don't remember now.  She mentioned she would like to use it in her profile, mentioned...not asked, and thanked me for posting my entry.

I wrote back and told her while I was flattered by her words, if she felt led to use mine as her own it was on her own conscience to do so and not mine.  Basicly, I told her to do what she thought was right.  As expected, she didn't credit me and I wasn't surprised.  Life went on and I wrote more entries...removing many of the old as I went along.  I'm not sure if her profile is still active.

- How would you handle the situation now given the potential outcomes?

You asked her to credit you or remove the words.  What more can be done?  I would handle my situation the same as I did at the time.

- What is your opinion on the whole situation?

Plagiarism is everywhere...look at the sig lines of some of the people who post here and you'll find a few who don't credit the source but appear to post the words and phrases as their own.  I don't agree with it but I do think it's telling of the people who chose to do this.
The woman you mention is no different...her choice was to shortcut with a backhanded compliment.

- Not that I'm going to ask CM to add a feature, but hypothetically, since we have stolen photos, should we not have stolen text?

Hypothetically, sure...stealing is stealing.  I've learned the hard way, though, that what you put on the internet is out there for the whole world to use.  It reminds me of some of the threads that are started here by new people...things like THIS that cracks me up everytime I read it.  There will always be lazy people trying to pass something off as their own.  Report it if you feel it would be helpful.

1. I would probably have written back and thanked them for the compliment and mentioned that it was somewhat unethical to post my words as their own without any reference to me. I would probably not have asked them to remove it. Most people's profiles and journals could benefit from a few passages written by me.

2. See item 1.

3. It's unethical on her part. I have to wonder why didn't you pursue the earlier episodes of plagiarism?

4. Sure. If you can show that someone pinched a post or other written words of yours and are passing them off as their own I see no difference.
