I was just sitting here at my desk savouring a bowl of fresh strawberries, marveling over how delish they are, musing over the fact they are one of my favourite seasonal foods.

This got me thinking what are my other favourites. Foods that I only get for a short period of time, at least when they actually taste good, like they should.

Fresh berries.....just yummmmm!!
Morels......is there anything better??
Fresh peaches, picked from my orchard trees. All warm and juicy. So sexy.
Sweet corn.........if you don't live in a rural area where you can eat it the same day it is picked, you really have no clue what it tastes like.
Fresh picked tomatoes......they taste NOTHING like tomatoes from the grocer.
Fresh walleye......the Queen of a fish fry.

What are your favourites?

Most fresh fruits or veggies....I grew up in Upstate NY, where they grow just about everything but citrus and tropical fruits.. Tomatoes, sweet corn, green beans, plums, cherries, apples....oh the apples!......peaches, pears...if it grows on a tree, a bush or underground, they grow it.  I really never realized how much better it all tasted until I couldn't get it anymore......grocery fruit produce is gross!  The things we take for granted......

Yes, that. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of my elderly neighbor letting me "sneak" into his strawberry patch and eat my fill. Yummy!

Cute story...my parents have a garden every year.....Mom first planted a bunch of strawberries, along with the usual garden stuff....their dog, Jade seems to think it's her own personal salad bar...and she LOVES strawberries!  It's always a dash to get them before Jade does.....the following year, mom planted more strawberries on the other side of hte garden and left the first batch.....Jade roots around in them like a pig looking for truffles.....and picks 'em clean!  You know she's been there cuz her lips are all red!  I've never seen a dog who picks her own stuff, but Jade just seems to know when everything is just perfectly ripe, and helps herself.  She can even shell the peas!

That is a very cute story. My dog gets offended if offered fruits or vegetables. It seems as if he finds them morally repugnant.

I was once offered a vegetable...Though morally repulsed, I banged her anyways.

I freeze fresh blueberries when I can get them, strawberries too....the best way to do it is to rinse them really well, and then layer them on a cookie sheet and freeze them.  This way, they freeze individually, and don't stick together, so you can bag them and they don't all get clumped together.  It's great for recipies cuz you can only take what you need.

This is today's Tip from the Kitchen!
