I volunteered at an inner-city Minneapolis special high school where ALL the students were African American. Even the staff referred to me as a "ghost" (that's how few white people worked there!)
Anyway, those kids did NOT consider Barack Obama to be "Black".

The discussion in the class went like this....

"Everyone says he's the first Black President."
"Obama isn't Black. He wasn't even raised here!"
"That [N-word] ain't of us. He's no brother."
"Okay, so are you saying that his skin isn't dark enough ?" their teacher asked.
"There's no slavery in him, wha'd he know about anything!"
"Skin color isn't enough to make anyone Black"
"Yeah, maybe, but he's the closest we'll ever get," said one discouraged 16 year old boy.

Personally, I think these kids are brighter than an African American talk show hostess, the media, and the general U.S. electorate combined.

Obama was elected by droves of white college kids who wanted to be "part of history" -- kids who are not likely to turn out and vote in the next election.

I think WyldHeart got it right. The honeymoon period is over, just like with any other president before him.

The issue is not how Black students in one high school classroom see the President. The issue is how opposition adults view him and what their motives might be.

Aneirin, he's HALF black, the other half is white.
And I don't like any president who can't or won't secure our border with Mexico or enforce our immigration laws.
If he did those two things he'd get my vote in 2012. That is going to be a continuing problem for him.
Clinton was a lawyer too and we saw how that worked out didn't we?
I'd like to see a "man or woman of the people" become president.

What does it mean to "secure our borders with Mexico?" Mexicans walk hundreds of miles through parched desert to find jobs. What additional deterrent do you propose, popeye?

If you are hellbent on keeping them out, perhaps you would support making it a felony to hire Illegals. Why is there resistence to putting the pressure on the Employers?

Race is a big issue in the Presidency and in the border problem, IMO.

You sound just like a birther with that bullshit, and deserve to be given just as much credibility.

Run along.

I think there are a lot of racists assholes out there and I am sure they hate him because of his skin color. That's what racists do.

That said, I think the majority of the people speaking out against him, including most of the tea party hate him for various other reasons. Just like they have hated many of the presidents that we have had in the past.

For me personally, I think he has done good things and bad. For example, I think it's great that he is letting unemployed workers go back to school but I hate that he pushed the health care bill through. Neither issue has anything to do with color.

The only thing I can think of that effected me in regards to his color is with my friends son. Before when she told him he could be anything he wanted when he grew up, even president, he would ask "what is the chance that the us would ever elect a black man for president?"

Now she can point to Obama and say "it's pretty good"

To me that's a step in the right direction.

I just have to ask, does the fact that he is black have anything to do with it ?

Now you see, this is what happens as a result of the EEO/AA programs. Once a Black man gets a high end position everyone can point to those laws and think he only got the job because he was black to fill a quota. If those laws weren't there the question couldn't be asked and instead we'd focus on the man's result and not his race.

Count up the number of Sarah Palin and GWB threads here. Neither of them are even still in office, yet people make threads about them just to trash them. It's not because he's black, it's because political discussions get ugly.

Oh and he just made private health insurance mandatory for everyone. Nobody's really happy with that shit. One side wants single payer, the other side wants no government interference.

Then again, I don't want Obama dead, so maybe I'm not your target audience for this question.

I think you are more of a target audience for this one then you care to admit.

Nothing I said was factually incorrect. Might not want to see the truth but that isn't my issue

LOL. So we really didn't have an election and he didn't win both the Popular vote and the EC? I must have been absent when it was a Affirmative Action program that made Obama President........

1. He's what George Bush was not.  The neocons got used to thinking that their way was the status quo during eight years of W.  Obama's policies (at least on paper) are a change from W, and not a slight one either.  So they're up in arms.  I suspect that Clinton would have engendered a lot more of this during his eight years if Reagan had not been followed by Bush I as a buffer.

2. The conservative yellers and screamers perfected their art under Clinton.  They're much better at it now, and are more effectively vocal.

3. W somehow avoided getting connected with the bailout in the minds of many but Obama hasn't.  I don't know why.  Maybe because the bailout happened after W had established his persona...

4. Yes, there are some who hate him because of his race.  I doubt that there are many.

My feelings are similar to Steven's. I think that those that hate, very likely see race as part of it, but I really do not believe it is that simple.

Most people only want the government to meddle in their personal lives when it benefits them, when they agree. But if they don't agree or think they will have to make some sort of effort or sacrifice, they squeal like little piggies.

Unfortunately human beings are human and more focused on personal gain than that of the collective big picture, until they want something from that big picture. There simply has to be a guiding force and there is no way everyone is going to be happy about the path they get nudged along. Too bad, so sad. To the haters I say, shut your whining mouths, educate yourself and become part of the solution (vote, get involved politically) instead of being more of the problems. Oh yeah, and come up with some solid, realistic, long term solutions instead of simply pissing and whining about the decisions of the people making an effort.

pahunkboy -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 7:15:53 AM)

Well he does do Bushes 3rd term better then Bush could have- the NWO loves him.

As to the Supreme court appointing bush yes true- but Gore would have been a trainwreck too- the agenda would have been mixed around- same goals tho.  This is why both parties are no longer for people- they are too corporate.

Also- we must be sure to criticize- cause if we dont simply cos he is black then we are humoring him.

No - I was being sarcastic.

I'm sure that the 96% of the black vote he received was a result of those voters analyzing the issues, and Obama's ability. (In case there is any doubt - that was also sarcasm.)

Obama's is a man of mixed race who happens to identify as black for personal gains and political capital. His race only serves to distract from the issues. It's sad that this question has to be asked in the face of the lack of accomplishments by this administration.

When people bring it up it serves as a distraction. I guess the "he's not had enough time" excuse has expired - now it's "...because he's black."

When will the excuses end and reality set in? The man didn't have the experience necessary, he's an academic theorist attempting to apply intellectual theory in the real world and finding out it doesn't work. He is not doing a good job.

The racists on both sides can debate this irrelevant issue, serving only to polarize and distract.

mnottertail -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 7:29:02 AM)

Well, just as good a reason for the 96% of the folks of colour to vote for him aint it? It aint like any all white folk analyze the issues if the boy is all white that's runnin, Merc.

Otherwise we wouldn't be in the fucking mess we are in. Its all sound bites and empty rhetoric ain't it?

pahunkboy -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 7:57:50 AM)

So are white folks allowed to criticize black presidents?

(rhetorical question)

mnottertail -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 8:01:26 AM)

I gotta think that valid criticisms of any folks do not obviate any high order principles, unless the criticism is either about one sides genetically superior tanning solutions, or another sides lack of melatonins.

pahunkboy -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 8:02:45 AM)

We also are allowed to criticize the Crown.

oops.
