the appropriate spelling is "grammar"

Many people depend too heavily on their spellcheckers without realizing that if at any time you accidentally told your checker to remember a word spelled incorrectly it will offer that up as an option from then on.

Good grammar is a good standard when you are going to be mainly communicating online with someone. It makes things far easier to read and comunicate when poor grammar makes emails a guessing game as to their meaning and purpose. However, it is hypocritical not to take the same care with your own grammar that you expect from someone else. I personally expect good grammar and proper sentence structure. I dont mind spelling errors, or even poor capitalization or missing 's and the like since I am a poor typist and do not always use them. I do, however, have a problem with someone who has so many issues with their grammar as to make their communications undecipherable. Also, if you are going to tell me ahead of time english is not your first language and you may have problems thats fine, but being a native English speaker or presenting yourself as one and not being able to write a coherent sentence is a problem by me.

LOL your spell check is broke??? You actually expect me to believe that??? This was in the OP "I am not talk about too" should read I am not talking about. Quite a few others for a 3 paragraph post!

So let me be clear your spelling and grammar suck. Brush up on your English writing skills, then perhaps you may be in a position to get out your "red pencil"

Snarking aside, I do think that EDUCATION is important for someone to be a good match with me. I will chitter away on the interwebs with someone who can't spell, but that person has to have gotten past the third grade level to keep my interest for any length of time. Also, they need to know the difference between nouns and verbs. If someone is looking for a "dominate" and they get mega cranky when I ask them if they mean "dominant", well... time to move on.

SailingBum -> RE: Is good grammer a reasonable standard? (5/6/2010 11:08:08 AM)

LOL I never claimed to be a expert in "grammer" like the OP. Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways

Snarking huh! We am not the one holding ourselves above all others whining about poor grammar and the ilk, and not even be able to spell grammar correctly.

"People who live in glass houses........................"

If the posters above you were as judgmental about the way folks get their point across as you are they'd have banished you immediately after your OP.

Lighten up & if you're interested in someone just chat with them. The truth will come out eventually.

Whilst thank goodness english isn't my first language and grammar isn't my strength, I was fine with it back home....however, if I would have to choose between a grammar-star who has no DIY skills whatsoever and a guy who can do the general fixing work on the car and the basic work in and around the house...then I would always chose the guy who has useful hands in daily life compared to the one who is proud about being abl to use the grammar correctly as quite frankly, I don't expect a guy to do any written conversation with local departments or so anyway and I can make myself understood in that respect. Therefore for me the priority is in how far can he cover areas in daily life where I am not so good at (can do a fair amount of DIY due to my dad doing everything at home apart from electricity, so grew up as a rather handy person, however I do prefer in a guy that he is able to use his hands in that respect and that he knows more about such stuff then I do.

In Germany I was always good in dictations...very few typing mistakes and helped out foreign course mates during my 2nd apprentice ship to fix their sentences....however, I regularly screwed it up at school when we had to decide ourselves where to place those damn commas (eg 2 spelling mistakes and 34 comma mistakes in a dictation). Needless to say it causes also some issues when talking in another language....if it bothers someone...well, so be it, I couldn't care less about....as after all I never claimed to be perfect and at least I know what my weakness is [:)] And it's ok, not to be perfect [:)]

IronBear -> RE: Is good grammer a reasonable standard? (5/6/2010 12:57:16 PM)

Being dyslexic is a pain in the arse, but when things are bas enough where I can't see even the most basic typos, I revert to writing posts in Word and using the spell checkers and grammar. I always have mine set to UK English since here the Australian dictionary has adopted many of the US slang as well as our own slang. Not 100% fool proof but at least it usually makes things more readable.
