Tige....I get far too many "gold-bordered" missives...Thank god I'm busy with much more pleasant pursuits ;-)...arguing with Sanity just doesn't have the same kick it used to.....lol.

NorthernGent -> RE: Just another conservative on vacation. (5/7/2010 1:47:47 PM)

There was a write up about this in today's Independent....and I felt for the bloke....

We've all been there.....where we've tried to present ourselves as something we're not.....at some point in our lives....because to be liked...in accordance with personal preference of what it takes to be liked....is a very human trait...

There was a lot of hypocrisy of course....a bit distasteful really....the idea that you can't live and let live....

But I couldn't help empathising with him....we could all be in that place for one reason or another....

Reading his excuses...I mean...it was a desperate man....none of them made any sense which tells the story of his desperation....

That's life though.....it's a funny old world...

On a related note...there was a politician who was outed a couple of years ago as paying for rent boys....and he was married and all.....he disappeared....and reappeared last night on television discussing the election....which I thought was a nice touch...we all make mistakes.....

domiguy -> RE: Just another conservative on vacation. (5/7/2010 1:57:49 PM)

everyone makes mistakes. You sexual preference probably isn't a "mistake". However, none of us always act in a manner that we wished we would have.

But George Rekers didn't just act in a fashion that is contradictory to his "true" self....He profited from it and attempted to harm others with his false views and testimony.

http://www.towleroad.com/2010/05/florida-ag-bill-mccollum-paid-george-rentboy-rekers-87000-to-be-star-witness-for-states-adoption-ban.html

FLORIDA AG BILL MCCOLLUM PAID GEORGE 'RENTBOY' REKERS $87,000 TO BE STAR WITNESS FOR STATE'S GAY ADOPTION BAN

Florida taxpayer dollars were used to compensate George Alan Rekers, the "ex-gay" activist caught recently returning from vacation with a hustler from Rentboy.com, to defend the state's ban on gay adoption.

While the ACLU defended Frank 'Martin' Gill and his sons, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum paid Rekers and his colleague Walter Schum close to $100K to spread their falsehoods in order to keep children away from the loving care of gay parents.

They were the only witnesses the state called.

Equality Florida:

"Rekers was one of only two witnesses Attorney General Bill McCollum called in an effort to reverse a Miami judge who ruled Florida's adoption ban- the only one in the country- is unconstitutional. McCollum paid Rekers and a colleague $87,000 for testimony that called gay people mentally unstable and advised that the ban should be expanded to include Native Americans because, Rekers claimed, they are also at much higher risk of mental illness and substance abuse. 'They would tend to hang around each other,' Rekers testified. 'So the children would be around a lot of other Native Americans who are … doing the same sorts of things.' This latest controversy may shed new light on how outrageously bias and scientifically unsupported Rekers' testimony has been, said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. 'It is disgraceful that the attorney general used taxpayer dollars to compensate this discredited bigot-for-hire,' said Smith. 'It shows just how low they have to scrape to find anyone even willing to defend this awful ban that denies children permanent loving homes.'"

So I guess we now know where the money came from for Rekers' "rent boy" and vacation — from the state of Florida's efforts to discriminate against gays and hurt children.

Reverend Wright has a pretty big footprint on utube. Go watch them and if you feel he is lying in any of them tell me and we can discuss it.

Can you imagine how weird that would be for a gay man to make a career out of criticizing gay men?

Not weird, hypocritical fits better. Not the first to use this tactic though.

FR

I'm just going to throw this in here. Not that long ago, a high school smoking buddy pinged me on a more mainstream social site, and we wound up having a fairly long catch up/laugh at old times phone call. He'd been down the serious druggie path, then rehab and school, and was now an addiction counselor. I always fugured rehab was for quitters, but we found we still had much to discuss 25 years later. The topic turned to relapse, and I found myself with the distinct impression that he was not as rehabed as some might believe. And yet I believe he is still perfectly capable of helping people a lot worse off than he is.

Now I'm of the opinion that sexual orientation is pretty much hardwired, but not everybody believes that. The people who don't believe that include some homosexuals. There are cocksuckers who don't want to want to suck dick. They are gay, but hate themselves over it. If it is gay-rehab or suicide, I'd rather write a check to the fundies than to a mortician. In that sense, this guy can be seen as performing a public service.

There is a harsh truth that we pretty much are who we are. Sometimes, people need a faith, however imperfect, that can keep them in one piece until they can make peace with themselves and that fact.

brainiacsub -> RE: Just another conservative on vacation. (5/7/2010 9:59:10 PM)

Rich, wouldn't a better alternative be if the Church and bible thumpers would stop teaching that homosexuality is a sin? Besides being theologically incorrect, this teaching perpetuates the ignorant stereotypes and guilt that causes one to want to commit suicide to begin with. Homosexuals and transgenders struggle with their sexuality because they live in a society that tells them that they have something to be ashamed of. It seems to me like you have it backwards.

NorthernGent -> RE: Just another conservative on vacation. (5/8/2010 1:02:58 AM)

Well yeah a spot of tolerance would be appreciated......mind you the church is no less accepting than wider society. And I think the church is no longer the centre for learning that it was 300 years ago....so it isn't in a position to make a big impact.

It's no great surprise that someone has told a lie and pretended to be someone he/she is not.

This is what politics amounts to though.......it seems people can't wait for a politician of the opposing party to step out of line so they can then tear them down and link hypocrisy with a particular party.

Politics has probably always been like this.....perhaps people should concentrate on the positives within their own party in order to have candidates who focus on policy and principles rather than spin and petty squabbles.....not sure which comes first....but if people spend their time squabbling.....then politicians will respond and pander to your squabbling to get your vote......which could be why you can't get a straight answer out of them.

Just out of curiosity here....is it possible that he likes fucking rent boys but genuinely believes gay couples should not adopt children? Possibly. I dunno...perhaps there's a self-loathing issue here.....he doesn't like himself for his homosexuality and this plays out in strong views on homosexuality. But he's just one person.....he makes no impact whatsoever where people do not agree with him.

Pandering and politicians, who would have thought that possible! The horror! [8|]

Yea, ok, I did it. Lasted about 1 1/2 minutes into the video before I had to shut it off. Sorry but life is too short to waste time listening to someone ranting like that. He might be making some really good points, but it is lost in all the hate and anger he is projecting. Now I am going to have to go listen to some Simon and Garfunkel to get that out of my head.

What about all the other religions of the world. Should they all follow the same format? Which beliefs do you feel Christians should be allowed to follow? Should they all be the same or will you allow them their differences as long as they fall in line with what you believe?

Now I admit, I hate that people use the bible to spread hate against homosexuals, but I hate even more that other people try to dictate what someone else believes.

True to a point....He was paid close to a 100,000 to provide testimony saying that homos are not fit to adopt. There is definitely an "impact."
