Well, I don't know what to tell you. Like I said, they called me. I told them it was fine as far as I was concerned, and they said they had a couple more calls to make. If you were out in the yard taking pictures of suspicious looking airplanes, you've got only yourself to blame.

Gawd, she looks like my brother,... the Teamster.
Who's he going to hire next, Susan Boyle?
How's about that lady with all the snakes in her hair, she must be looking for work!
He could put her in charge of tourism!

Falls over laughing......

Gawd, I wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley, she looks like Luca Brazzi on "The Godfather."
They should use her to question al qeada terrorists, "I'll Tell! I'l Tell!"

laurell3 -> RE: Elena Kagan, pick for the Supreme Court (5/9/2010 10:50:58 PM)

You ever see Janet Reno in person? Her hands were twice the size of most men's hands.....yet, I had a certain amount of respect for her, even when I vehemently disagreed with her.

I can only assume you were never hired based upon your boyish charms.

The cherry on the Kagan Sundae, of course, is that she's a past consultant for Goldman Sachs.

Greenwald has been picking Kagan apart for a pretty long time now, ever since it first became apparent that she was far and away the most likely nominee.  His latest column, a sort of highlights reel of his other Kagan columns, is a good place to start http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/05/08/kagan/index.html

Why pick someone with no paper trail?

He pledged unprecedented openness, yet he plays these parlor games which are but a means of getting around that pledge.

That is, unless he's really stupid enough to put someone on the highest court in the land whose views are a complete wild card.

OrpheusAgonistes -> RE: Elena Kagan, pick for the Supreme Court (5/10/2010 4:01:48 AM)

Yeah, I don't disagree with you here.  If I remember your posting history correctly, we disagree on domestic political philosophy and we also read Obama differently.  I think you think (correct me if I'm wrong) he's a liberal, possibly Socialist, snake in the grass; whereas I think he's a yellowbellied Corporatist varmint.

What interests me is how often critiques of Obama from the Right get his political style exactly right, even if they misread his agenda.  I'm beginning to think that's not accidental.  It's much easier for Obama to shore up his support with liberals by occasionally saying (but not doing, mind you) something he knows will aggravate Conservatives than it would be for him to take concrete, substantive action to advance something resembling a Progressive agenda.

As it stands, Obama wants Progressive voters (and their financial and organizational efforts) but he doesn't want to alienate the center-right elements that really control (and finance) the Democratic party.  He understands better than anybody (Bush had a weirdly primal understanding of this even if his head was terribly muddled) the tribalism in American politics.  He doesn't need to do anything for Progressives to keep their support, all he needs to do is every now and then make a gesture or an off-handed comment that he knows won't bother anybody except those far enough on the right that they'd hate him no matter what he did.  What's he losing?  Nothing.  What's he gaining?  The continued support of Progressives who giggle and point as the other tribe foams at the mouth.  He never really promised Progressives much (he let them think what they wanted and project whatever views they wanted to on him) and so far he's delivered.

Kagan is another little "Fuck you" to the liberal wing of the party.  He's replacing the most liberal judge on the current court with a callow, untested nominee whose views (to the degree people seem to be able to suss them out) are of the mealymouthed, mushball Moderate school.  He has the numbers in Congress to get through any reasonable candidate and this is his pick.  Each time a moment is forced to its crisis and he has to make a choice, he tells his own left wing "We can't do it this time guys, but next time, seriously.  We're gonna get 'em."

Why?  I think you're right--it's because he understands how to run a game on voters better than anybody in a long time.

Incidentally, before somebody says "Kid, that's just how politics works," and then chuckles knowingly, I'm well aware of that.  Reagan became a darling of the American Right while governing nearer the center than most of his supporters realized.  Kennedy became a Lion of the Left while governing to the center-right.  What makes Obama different is that he's been so successful at selling himself to starry-eyed idealists for much longer than I ever thought he'd be able to.  The Kagan nomination could maculate his shiny white armor...but I've thought that before.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Elena Kagan, pick for the Supreme Court (5/10/2010 4:53:15 AM)

Another Ivy League choice. Old and tired choices when daring and new blood is needed in our Land.

Aynne88 -> RE: Elena Kagan, pick for the Supreme Court (5/10/2010 7:14:35 AM)

Yes but DomYngBlk the right wing is going to fight thuis nomination all summer long anyway, because it's Obama. They will jam this process up to the point of a complete fucking disaster just to keep playing party politics so if he picked anyone even remotely more left or progressive it would never get accepted. They are already going to find tons of fault with her once it starts, watch and see...typical GOP bullshit. [8|].

It appears that you feel that justices for the supreme court should be chosen like beauty conteatants instead of for any intellectual capacity that they might bring to the court.

Sanity -> RE: Elena Kagan, pick for the Supreme Court (5/10/2010 7:39:55 AM)

The left fought every Bush nomination all the way because it was Bush, so whats your point? Since the SC is a lifetime anointment and these people are as gods over us perhaps its best if every nomination is a real fight.

These people had ought to be exposed before the brightest most glaring lights that can be directed their way.

Partly. Mostly because November is coming and they've got nothing else.

I'm surprised by how good that article was, thanks for posting it. Its very informative and there are a ton of linked articles that fully explore who this woman is and why Obama is picking her.

Something thats being overlooked in all of it is, having served in both the Clinton and the Obama administrations I'm sure that many high level Democrats have had a lot of quiet conversations with Elena, and they know exactly where she stands on all the key issues.
