Don't think so, they at least are still captives, albeit high profile amongst many from other nations, this piracy has to stop, and to me, if the Russians have dealt with the problem in the case of those they captured, at least they are sending out a clear and strong signal to existing and would be pirates.

The elderley British couple from what I understand are kept apart for the first time in their lives since marriage and their health is rapidly deteriorating, I fear they or at least one will die alone in captivity. Although I understand negotiations are constant, it still irritates somewhat that piracy still exists and becoming more high profile due to the current crop of targets. It bothers me the international community is not doing more, perhaps use those grey lumps to once again police the seas and keep sea lanes open, so things like piracy becomes stuff of fiction and an unelightened past.

Status: offline 		In the US maybe, the UK and various other countries, but the rest of the world is a very different place, crime is dealt with in whatever manner is expedient at the time. In the case of the Russian merchant crew who were captives, perhaps the Russian military saw fit to punish in the corresponding capacity for threatening the  life and limb of their countrymen, who knows what else might have come out in their questioning of the piratical horde.

Difficult issue... the pirates do not belong to any sort of government and are operating on their own authority.  They cannot be tried under the laws of their country, and since we are not at war with Somalia, they are not POWs.

No, and they make it a point to be sure everyone is aware of it, too.

Say what you want about Putin, he remembers what works and what doesn't. As a former KGB agent, I'm sure he recalls the time in 1985 when Hezbollah hit upon the brilliant idea of kidnapping four Soviet diplomats in Lebanon. KGB immediately sent a Spetnaz team to free them, but by the time they got to Beirut, one of the four had already been  murdered. Nobody really knows all the details of what happened after that, but the general consensus is that they castrated one of the family members, stuffed his testicles into his mouth, shot him in the head, cut the head off, and had it delivered to his wife - along with a note saying, "We will keep sending packages until we run out of family members, and then we'll just get more family members."

The three surviving Soviet diplomats were immediately released, and the Soviets never had any problems with Hezbollah again. I'll be surprised if any more Russian-flagged vessels are taken by pirates.

Status: offline 		But to me, if the Russians had killed the pirates, casting them adrift in a rubber dinghy for anyone to find is very sloppy of them, unless that was the intention, a clear message to the finder, pirates will be dealt with accordingly. I certainly do not believe any other western nation will stick their noses into the affairs of Russian military and police actions, when it is other western nations have failed to adequately deal with the problem themselves.

Now what we want, is an old style raider, a merchant vessel which at the drop of hoardings becomes a war ship. A few raiders in those waters should deter some piratical practices.

Although as it looks like Jihadist elements are driving the secular Somalians out of the lucrative pirate trade at the moment, all of the excuses for ignoring international law that have been practised since 2003 might soon be brought to bear on this one.

I was just pointing out that all of the shit people like you have been spouting for the last three years about the Somali pirates being jihadists now looks like it's about to come true. Can't imagine any other reason for this than the Al Shabaab boys wanting to get their hands on some of that easy money.
