Marini -> 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 4:07:47 PM)

I heard this on the way home today.
The 10 Somali pirates that were captured alive by the Russians, were "released" by the Russians, and "found" dead a few hours later.

Isn't that odd?
Things that make ya go hummmm?
The newsman that reported this news, stated he felt there was a 99% chance they were executed.
Well they were released in an inflatable boat, with no navigational equipment.

I would like to see the inflatable "boat", I wonder if they were really old inner tubes.
I have always felt, the Russians are not the ones to "tinker" with.

BBC News - Freed Somali pirates 'probably died' - Russian source

Well, the Russians are not really known for due process, but I might point out that at one time, pirates were executed when captured.  Granted that was a few hundred years ago, and occasionally after a trial, but the punishment for piracy was death.

Considering the fact that the problem is actually more acute than most realize, perhaps a military presence in waters where such activities do occur, with authorization of the use of deadly force to put a stop to the problem, the problem might well become controllable.

I certainly won't lose any sleep over it..

You mean the Russians didn't take the pirate Muslim terrorists back to the mother land and make them honorary Russians, read them the Russian equivalent of their Miranda rights, offer them prayer rugs and Korans and exercise yards and three square meals a day (all in a lush Caribbean environment), and sympathetic lawyers and access to visitors from the Red Crescent?

They just "found them dead"?

Shocking.

So you are advocating that the death penalty be applied without benefit of a trial?

No, what's shocking is how far off the deep end you are going lately.

How surprising.

The U.S. aren't ones to 'tinker with' either. For that matter, nor were the Romans, The Japanese, Pol Pot, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, or Hitler.

If you are kidnapped by somali pirates and used as hostages, do they read you your rights ?

The situation with the Maersk Alabama was different in that a hostage was in imminent danger.

This seems to be a calculated execution without trial.

I have no clue what the rest of your post is supposed to mean.

No they don't but that is the difference.

This is the same as the arguments over "enhanced interrogation techniques" and detention without due process.

Do as I say not as I do, because the end justifies the means.

Right?

servantforuse -> RE: 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 5:14:19 PM)

In some cases such as the security of our country, the ends do justify the means..

Then we really have no principles to stand on, do we?

If we resort to the tactics we claim to deplore for enhanced security then we are no better than those we condemn.

servantforuse -> RE: 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 5:26:39 PM)

In certain cases I agree with that..

Aneirin -> RE: 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 5:28:34 PM)

The question is, how did they die, anything recognisable as acts of violence by others, and the second question is, who cares about people who through force of arms and violence capture, imprison and sometimes execute people for the purpose of extorting money. My understanding is the harder it becomes for those who wish to profit from acts of piracy, the better it will be for trade and traveller alike. More can be achieved by covert military action than standing armies with their plethora of technological weaponry that serves as proving grounds for arms manufacturers. Piracy is a thing of the past, make it remain so.

What the Russians do is their business.
And Pirates don't get "due process" especially in the Indian Ocean. They should be shot on sight.
This is a military action not a police action.

servantforuse -> RE: 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 5:33:28 PM)

Whatever happened to the retired British couple kidnapped by somali pirates ? Were they ever freed ?

jlf1961 -> RE: 10 Captured Somali pirates "found dead" by Russians (5/11/2010 5:37:10 PM)

quote:

Law of nationsPiracy is of note in international law as it is commonly held to represent the earliest invocation of the concept of universal jurisdiction. The crime of piracy is considered a breach of jus cogens, a conventional peremptory international norm that states must uphold. Those committing thefts on the high seas, inhibiting trade, and endangering maritime communication are considered by sovereign states to be hostis humani generis (enemies of humanity).

That in and of itself is the rub, no nation, group of nations or the United Nations has come up with a good way of dealing with "enemies of humanity."

However, it seems the Russians may have a clue as to how to deal with them.

Pirates are routinely captured, questioned, disarmed and released.  There is no reason for them not to keep being pirates.  If commercial ships were armed, and pirates had the real chance of being killed, then perhaps they would find a good reason to quit.

We may never officially know "how they died".
The inflatable boat story, is a bit odd, though.
They were "released" because they did not have sufficient legal grounds to detain them.

The Russians "released" them in an inflatable boat, then set them adrift in the Indian Ocean, with no navigational equipment to make their way home.

This is why I have such a crush on Vladimir Putin.
