On the topic of a nation's priority, no nation in this day and age can ignore what goes on outside its borders anymore; however, there are a huge number of issues that each and every nation has to deal with within them as well. All of these have to be dealt with, or if not, the repercussions will have to be dealt with.

As for poverty in America, I can believe it is much like poverty in Canada, and that is something I can speak with some small amount of authority on. Though I have not, thankfully, lived in poverty I have spent a great deal of time among people who have lived with it and can tell quite a few stories.

Like the bottle man, who spent thirty years on the streets of a major urban centre, collecting bottles and cans and bringing them in to the recycling depot for the deposit money. He died with $90,000 in a bank account, into which he had put all of that money because he found his food and shelter without needing to use it.

Like the many people, generally but far from exclusively white males, who would not work if you handed them a good job and a home to live in, for as many reasons as there are individuals. More often than not, these are not drug addicts or alcoholics trying to escape from something in their past. I know, I have spoken to many of them at great length. These individuals, at least, have chosen this way of life, because they for whatever reason will not work for someone else (often called "the man"), but either do not possess the entrepreneurial nature to make a life such as you or I live, or simply consider that to be working for the government (just another aspect of "the man") to pay its taxes.

As with anything, the situation of poverty is a very subjective one. There are no teeming masses of humanity subsisting daily, or less frequently, on a meagre ration of rice or what have you the way millions in many parts of the world do, but there are certainly many living in circumstances few of us would consider acceptable for ourselves. It is all a matter of perspective. To improve the lives of a single homeless family in North America costs as much as improving the lives of an entire village in far too many places. Imagine what ten thousand dollars would do in either of these situations. Would you take a bowl of nourishing food from a child in some other nation, who has no opportunity to fend for his or herself, and give it to an American, who has so much opportunity to go out and find work? It may be unpleasant work that he or she doesn't want to do, it may be hard work, but it's far more than anything that child will ever have.

Why did this get moved to random stupidity? Because it was a poll? Then take away the options to post polls in other areas.

Dammit you made me have to turn back to serious again tonight (Just kidding!!) In truth, Christina, if the option to post polls in other areas were removed, then they would ONLY be in here. Subject matter can be about anything in a poll, always has been, and has always been in polls. It is POSSIBLE, (thinks of other thread) but is in fact probable, that the mod moved it because, honestly, not taking into account whether the poll is "good" or "bad" it IS a poll.Normally though, polls dont have this much discussion, and definitely not the depth or breadth of this discussion. Therefore, as soon as my trusty old computer can do it, this thread will be transported to the arena of politics and religion.  Don't make you and everyone else make me turn serious again tonight little lady!!!

At this moment in time our priority has to be this country. We've got social problems that would take us a few lifetimes to sort out...and like most countries in the Western world...we're on the verge of banckrupcy...and we need to get our act together.

We have a situation in England where we're that busy trying to save Iraq and the like that we've taken our eye off the skills and qualifications that the people of this country need in order to retain its competitiveness. We're in a situation where the like of China and India are putting huge numbers through university and if we don't get a handle on the things we need to do to remain competitive then we're in serious trouble 10 years down the line......and that's saying something considering the state of this country's finances.

I'm afraid that when needs must charity must begin at home.

And as for the world's events impacting upon your own country....well of course that's the case....but how far do you go to manage these events?

I'd say that an international body bound by international law is sufficient.....there's no need to take that to the next step and suggest that we have an obligation to resolve the poverty in whatever country. We don't.

Homelessness has many reasons and certainly is not exclusive to those who thumb their nose at society. Many are dealing with various forms of mental illness. The saddest of all imho are those with PTSD.

No, boy, I will not. Just because you don't like that I have a different viewpoint doesn't mean it shouldn't be said.

Am I saying that they are not poor? No, I'm saying that the US standard of poverty is different from the world standard (kudos to luci who pointed out the differences of what we are talking about).

My point is that the people who scream US FIRST are also the ones foolish enough not to see the forest for the trees. What upsets me is that these are the same people who are buying things at the dollar store, crap things that are made by Chinese people who actualy *are* living in poverty so that the people can buy the $1 fake flowers to make their home pretty. We are living in a time of stuff... junk... crap... living beyond our means, forgetting that there is more to the world than just ourselves.

The essence of what I'm saying (shockingly the same US FIRST people are again only seeing trees and not the forest) is that we can not take a narrow point of view for NATIONAL POLICY making. (I believe that was the point of the thread rather than whether people living in the homeless shelter with three hots and a cot and indoor plumbing are as qualified to call themselves poor as are the people dying of starvation and dehydration in other countries). The world is bigger than our own little lives (not meaning to channel Rick here, but hey, he was onto something!)

best,
sunshine

They are also most likely never having left the country and display mind boggingly xenophobic nehavior. Sunshine is right, we here do not have a *larger* picture of what poverty is. Travel to India, or any 3rd world country, parts of the Eastern Bloc, then we can talk poverty. We also are greatly hated by many other nations and to ignore that and remain flag waving NIMBY's puts us at great risk.

Sunny has been there and has seen more than i would ever care to see.

Poverty does exist in the US, but it is judged by our standards. Yes, there are those who are hungry, but there are also places they can go for a hot meal.

The poll assumes that the country is a monolith with a single set of interests.  Maybe I'm getting isolationist, but in my view, the greatest issue is whether this country represents its own citizens.

One of the country's top priorities should be to ensure for its own survival.  However, I feel that it has moved beyond that and is now enriching itself at the cost of its own citizens.  Ideally, the country would serve as a conduit, to transfer goods and services from one sector of the populace to another.  However, this conduit is feeding itself pretty damn well...

Wow, maybe you guys are right. I will just call the lady down at COTS http://www.cotsdetroit.org/ and let her know I don't think the poor in Detroit have  suffered quite as much as the ones in India, so any money we were planning on sending you will be routed to them instead. I can always go back to helping COTS when Detroit reaches the level needed for me to give a shit about them.

I am just thankful that Gospel for Asia is helping people in other countries. I have always like that group and would hate to have to stop giving to them also.

I am getting the feeling that some people think if you make your own country a priority, then you can't give help to anyone else.

i looked at the website for COTS and it seems awesome..giving food and shelter to those who need it.
The point that i was making is there are those who do not have groups such as COTS.
