Because words change from their original meaning to become something else. It has become an interjection, nothing more, nothing less.

More importantly I would ask, why do people who believe in god, commit blasphemy?  I find that more bizzaro.

A good point. Swearing is a bigger deal if you believe in God than it is if you're just using a figure of speech you don't give a hoot about.

I actually make a conscious effort to eliminate religious references from my vocabulary and be more aware of the words that I use. I'll say oh my, oh my gosh or oh my stars.

To use blasphemy in the first place isn't a sign of mastering self-control, but it's doubly silly to curse something you don't believe in.

In general, I don't use this phrase (I tend to use "f*ck a duck" or "this bites moose balls"), but I know a number of people who do, and can tell you that, in general, it is completely disconnected from the concept of "god" -- it is an expletive... a habitual outburst used in times of threat or stress which is reflexive and typically bears no connection to either reality or capacity.

In other words -- people say it without making any connection between the words they're letting out and any philosophical or factual act or belief. In the same way that people will say "f*ck this!" with no intention of actually either inserting their member INTO said thing/situation or having said thing/situation inserted into them.

What Calla said.

I tend to use religious interjections almost as habit - "For God's sake", "Christ on a bike", all that stuff. I'll also say "For fuck's sake" or "For crying out loud" too - it just depends which one is closest to my tongue as to which one I use

Although I do tend to modify what I say depending on the people nearby, and whether I give a damn about offending their sensibilities

Personally I don't, I like the sound of "Christ on a stick" better.

i am aware its a figure of speech lol, but it was one of those things that just had me take notice...and i told an agnostic person "bless you" after they sneezed (what a conversation THAT was *rolls eyes*) i'm not highly religious, but i am a Jew for Jesus, so i have a bit of a background dealing with the Bible's language. GD(sorry for shortening it- i hate to say it or type it more than i need to) comes from "may God damn" or God shall damn", so thats why i find it funny- that phrase means you want God to curse something or someone.

That's what it means to you. Not to me. To me it means I hit my finger with a hammer. The proper pronunciation is godammit or gol-darn if you are from the Southland. I could go on but it would only become more crude.

ok so horray for you for not being crude? Any bible that circles around Judism, Catholosism, and or Christianity all have the same version of the old testement, and that phrase is the same in each one. so i dont really think what i posted has much to do with you striking your hand with a hammer or where you are from or how you pronounce it. just saying.

I believe what people are trying to say is that because the word doesn't hold religious meaning to them, it doesn't matter.  If someone says 'fuck you'... they are not suggesting the person should be fucked.  It's a pharse not to be taken so literally unless one was of a faith.

I might be using that one soon lol.

I try not to say them, But it is ingrained from hearing it so much from family. "Jesus H. Christ, Jesus Effing Christ, For Christ's Sake, Goddamnit, and Damn it to Hell" are things I heard alot growing up so I find myself using them even though I am not Christian.

Spellcheck

Hooray
Judaism
Catholicism
Testament

And you asked for opinions, He gave you his reason for using the word. To him the statement "Goddamnit" is used when he has hurt himself or has been hurt. Simple as that
