Oh god they aren't.......MANDALS are they??

I guess you have your answer, LP! Lots of times the mods leap in when we THINK we are having fun---though OMG it's prolly the deadly BANTER!!--and I wonder what their deal is. Dumb threads deserve to be derailed. If they are destined to get back on track, they will be. How often does that happen in real life, you're at a party having a convo, someone new comes in, the subject changes, then you get back to it later?

There is NO freakin thing we are discussing on these boards that can't stand some lightening up.

While I intended this as a joke, I'd like to shift gears and say that the last five posts, taken collectively, are very much on topic.  Even though I'm a known poster who almost never posts that badly over the top, I successfully focused all attention on me -- and away from the OP -- by talking like a dick.

I'd consider this to be a hijack, not a drift, and it's a good example of how vulnerable threads are to anyone who wants to stir shit.  I think a lot of it stems from the desire of people to be right, and to be able to correct another.  Sometimes people don't realize, though, that a form of cyberjudo is being performed on them, and it would be better if they just didn't engage at all.

In terms of when moderators should do something about drift or hijacking, my answer would be: when either (1) TOS is being bent enough to potentially endanger the site if things continue, or (2) if someone reports a post, and the report is justified.  If no one is complaining, and the site's not at risk, I see no reason for the mods to do anything.  Once members get ticked because of excessive threadjacking, though, it's time to deal.

Red,  you point is well taken- but there could have been a poster who deserved that- and in that case it would not be a highjack. - more of an intervention.

LP had not "asked" for that type of reply- so- of course people will defend her.

the problem with that red is we have way too many overly sensitive people that see conspiracies in everything and any friendly comments or laughter is pointed out as some planned attack, which is just silly. I think the moderation is fine as is personally. I think people on both sides need to let up a bit on their stance without stressing the already overburdened staff.

I certainly wasn't picking on the moderators! They have guidelines of their own to follow, and shoot, how do we know if they got a complaint or report? I just think folks need to chill about having a good time here.

The assholes need to go somewhere else, too, but that's a whoooooole other thread!

L3, a bad day now and then should not be earth shattering.   We all have them.   Only when it becomes- seemingly forever- then a new course/plan would be needed for that person.

EATING PIE IS BAD FOR YOU!

I like lots of things that are bad for me. Including pie. For the record, should we start a poll of which kind of blueberry pie is preferred, crumb or crust? Ala mode or straight up?

Finds it amusing how a thread on thread drift has totally drifted yet somehow stayed on topic...ish.
