Congress today voted to repeal the Do Not Ask Do Not Tell military policy.

Status: offline 		It's both an interesting and completely meaningless factoid that a higher percentage of my gay friends are veterans than found among my straight friends, and my service pre-dates DADT. The UCMJ is still going to govern behavior.

Honestly, it's going to open up whole new realms for drill instructors when they mock a push-up.

It still has to make its way through the Senate where Republicans have threatened a filibuster.

Status: offline 		It still has a long way to go and it looks like the GOP will do everything they can to stop it.  They want the ban in place and everyone else is saying repeal it so they can serve openly and not be a reason to get discharged,

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, which prohibits gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military. 

A few comments from the party listening to the people of this country (at least that is their gimmick this week)

REP. LOUIE GOHMERT (R-TX): “If someone has to be overt about their sexuality, whether it’s in a bunker where they’re confined under fire, then it’s a problem. And that’s what repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell does. It says, ‘I have to be overt, I don’t care. I want this to be a social experiment.”

REP: TODD AKIN (R-MI): “So are we then going to then protect and condone homosexuality in the military?…Is this the sort of thing that George Washington or our founders would be proud of, that we are doing today in this quick flash before Memorial Day?”

REP. TRENT FRANKS (R-AZ): “We’re going to say, ‘No. We don’t care what you say. You can die for us on the battlefield, but you have no input into this process.’ That’s a disgrace to this institution and it’s an insult to the men and women who pour out their blood on foreign battlefields for the country that we all love so much.

In the Senate:

In the Senate, Armed Services Republicans threatened to filibuster the defense authorization bill “if it comes to the floor with Democrat-backed language repealing DADT.” “I’ll do everything in my power,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said. “I’m going to do everything I can to support the men and women of the military and to fight what is clearly a political agenda.” Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) agreed, promising to support a filibuster “if the repeal language makes it into the version of the bill that goes to the floor, most likely after the Memorial Day recess.”

Of course most polls shows people want the law repealed and allow people to serve no matter what their sexually is.  Except the GOP

A Washington Post/ABC News poll showed that 75 percent of Americans support ending DADT. A New York Times survey indicated 70 percent support for gay men and lesbians serving openly.

So the GOP is only 25-30% of the country? I think you may want to recheck your figures. I am pretty sure there are more out there than that.

i know several republicans who support repealing dadt, including current and former servicepeople. i'm guessing part of that 70% is republican or at least conservative.

it's funny that people don't consider having pictures of your significant other or living on base with them or bringing them to military functions "overt" and "forcing it on people" if the person is of the opposite gender.

sometimes the rhetoric just makes me sick.

You cannot deny that the Republicans in Congress are overwhelmingly opposed to this. 

So, if their constituents support it why are they opposed?  Other than they are practicing the same obstructionism they
have since Obama took office.

If you look at the first line of the post it is pretty clear the reference to GOP was intended to mean Congress.

The later portion seemed to me to also refer to Congress using "people" to differentiate from Republican voters.

And "she" is a he, something I recall you became upset about in the past when a poster referred to you in the wrong gender.

Status: offline 		Well since the whole post is about elected officials, one would think the connection could be made.  But then again, there are those who choose to take 1 word and through out the whole point.  My point was directed to the people the article is about, our wonderous GOP elected officals, like the ones quoted.

As stated the polls done by the Wash Post/ABC and the NYT show 75-70% of all people want the law repealed.  You're the one saying it is only Democrats  and the country is only 30%GOP.  I'm smart enough to know there would be members of all parties included in the poll.  I mean it's not a FOX poll

Now unless I am mistaken, most polls are taken of the general public, not congress. But if you meant "congress" I apologize for misunderstanding.
