There's a yarn store in my locality that offers free samples. They have several large spools of yarn on racks in the front of the store and you can cut off pieces.

Is this a variation on 'first hits free'?

In 'at will' work states, it's both. I don't get paid sick days, holidays, vacations, or anything else. I get paid for exactly the time I work, and that's all.
