Israeli commandos storm aid flotilla; 10 killed By AMY TEIBEL and TIA GOLDENBERG, Associated Press Writers – 25 mins ago JERUSALEM – Israeli naval commandos stormed a flotilla of ships carrying aid and hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists to the blockaded Gaza Strip on Monday, killing at least 10 passengers in a predawn raid that set off worldwide condemnation and a diplomatic crisis. Israel said its commandos were attacked by knives, clubs and live fire from two pistols wrested from soldiers after they rappelled from a helicopter to board one of the vessels. Dozens of activists and at least 10 Israeli soldiers were wounded in the bloody confrontation in international waters. Reaction was swift and harsh, with a massive protest breaking out in Turkey, Israel's longtime Muslim ally, which unofficially supported the mission. Ankara announced it would recall its ambassador and call off military exercises with the Jewish state. The bloody showdown came at a sensitive time in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to meet Tuesday with President Barack Obama to discuss the next round in U.S.-led indirect negotiations. From Toronto, Netanyahu spoke by telephone with top Israeli officials and expressed his "full backing" for the military, according to a statement from the army.

What a hell on earth…hate hate hate that is all those people can feel. Both claim to be the chosen people and each surely will burn in hell. Would you not think that Israel could have blockaded the ships then negotiated a search to be sure weapons were not being smuggled. Let them drop off their humanitarian aid and perhaps gain support for their position rather than world condemnation? Butch

Protests are planned around the world at Israeli embassies. I am in no hurry for ww3. but a financial collapse ALWAYS means war.

Seems like the blockade runners achieved their goal. Just when the administration was trying to wrap up the damage control from the last diplomatic screw-up with Israel, too. Let's hope they learned from that.

Sometimes tho Israel is correct. I know often they are not- but on occasion- they are.

Attacking aid convoys is rarely correct, though I suppose it's slightly more correct than bombing the red cross, which they were doing a lot of during the last dust up in Palestine.

-- Just because the ships were for aid- does not mean they were. They might have been hauling contraband. They admit the raid was "botched"

Israel called for the ships to stop and come to an Israeli harbor. The flotilla refused and kept going. Other nations have boarded ships in international waters which they perceive as threats, so if Israel had reason to believe there were weapons on board they did not act any differently than any other nation would have by boarding. The passengers responded to the boarding with violence and trying to take guns and turn them on the soldiers (All very peace loving and such, as the flotilla passengers claimed they would act peacefully to an interception.). There seemed to be no attempt to negotiate a peaceful inspection of the cargos…just a demand to stop or be boarded. Why should Israel care if food, fuel, and clothing is delivered to Gaza? It was obvious the intent of this flotilla and Israel fell for it hook line and sinker…they are so predictable. Imagine the different outcome of Israel had publicly given permission for the flotilla to deliver its goods if they submitted to an inspection for arms. Then if they refused to allow this inspection Israel would have been justified in boarding and not faced world condemnation. Butch

They were deliberately in violation of the Israeli embargo and knew they were going to be boarded. So what was there to negotiate? Thing is, rockets fall on Israel all of the time, and one of these times one is going to be tipped with something other than just high explosives and so of course the Israelis are going to inspect the cargo. What you seem to be demanding is suicide on Israels part. Agree - the aid is going to a terrorist-run area of the world. We should cry because they got killed? Hamas illegally took over Gaza, and now cries because of the million odd people who are suffering because of their actions? If the Arab nations truly had the welfare of the people of Gaza in the front of their minds, they would offer to take these people and resettle them in their own country. The suffering people of Gaza are a propoganda tool for the Arabs.
