"Lawyer as Leader."

26 of our 44 presidents have been lawyers:

1. John Adams
2. Thomas Jefferson
3. James Madison
4. James Monroe
5. John Quincy Adams
6. Andrew Jackson
7. Martin Van Buren
8. John Tyler
9. James Polk
10. Millard Fillmore
11. Franklin Pierce
12. James Buchanan
13. Abraham Lincoln
14. Rutherford Hayes
15. Chester Arthur
16. Grover Cleveland
17. Benjamin Harrison
18. William McKinley
19. William Taft
20. Woodrow Wilson
21. Calvin Coolidge
22. Franklin Roosevelt
23. Richard Nixon
24. Gerald Ford
25. Bill Clinton
26. Barack Obama

Sheesh, (most) of those presidents wearn't that good.
"Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton" "resigned, appointed, impeached."
And I didn't know that Andrew Jackson was a lawyer, I thought he was a General.
They didn't have "law schools" in the 1700's I don't think. In Vermont you can become a lawyer by apprenticing under a lawyer even today.

As a former member of the underground- Obama gets Karma on this- namely killer lightening.  meanwhile the whole world is wondering why we cant send the big guy to Arlington.   Obamas home was in Chicago- he could have watch WGN-TV for the weather...or his staff- which include many from Goldman Sachs- the people who stole your retirement.

What the hell is your problem...a speech got rained out and it is somehow the speech-giver's fault because he didn't give the speech somewhere else? This is just stupid.

Arpig, this is one of those times when President Obama is not merely the political head of the gov't, but also the symbolic head of state. Laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns is not a mandatory ritual, but it is an important one. A nice weekend getaway with his family isn't much reason to skip it. Even if the weather in Chicago had been perfect, he still would have caught some crap. Given that he is the Commander in Chief, about to send this nation's sons into a meat-grinder called Kandahar, this thunderboomer came at a bad time.

And why do you think "he would have caught some crap" when other Presidents have had a history of missing Arlington?

Just because Fox and the other conservative talking heads need something to whine about?

Just checked your posting history. You seemed to have no problems with GWB when he didn't lay the wreath. How about his father who never laid the wreath in Arlington during his 4 years as President? Or maybe Raygun Ronnie who only hissed 4 of 8?

This is another 'only President to put his feet on the Reliant desk' moment. For anyone not paying attention when the right wing trotted out that lie they assumed their audience was too stupid to do any research to find that there were photos of several othe rPresidents with their feet on the desk.

FR

I kind of like the idea of the President's speaking at different places--military cemeteries and battlefields--around the country on Memorial Day. It helps underscore the fact that the nation is vast and varied. Perhaps he could do Arlington every other year and diverse spots in between. How powerful would it be, for instance, to have a Memorial Day speech at Pearl Harbor? Or Gettysburg?

Something along these lines happened in Britain with the Royal Maundy Service. It used to take place at Westminster Abbey every year, till someone early in this queen's reign had the idea of using a different cathedral each year. The change breathed new life and interest into the service.

Be sure to check under my old nic, too, Ken. [;)]

I believe Bush II spoke in Normandy, on his way to a NATO conference, and I'd love to see some documentation on Reagan missing four. While recovering from the assassination attempt maybe, and for a summit with Gorbachev, I'm pretty sure... Of course, his illness was taking a great toll in his final year as well. What was the fourth? Surely you aren't suggesting President Obama was "vacationing with his family in Chicago" in order to conceal his physical and mental deterioration, are you? Or some other bad habit?

It isn't mandatory. It is bad politics for him to miss it, though, no matter how good the speech President Obama wound up giving on an Air Force base was. He isn't Bush I or II, nor Clinton or Reagan. His decision was made in these times, and in the political climate we have right now. It isn't going to play well, and it was his decision to add the image of his stand-in placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns on the plates of the talking heads. Unforced error.

dcnovice -> RE: Obama Memorial Day Speech Cut Short By Rain (5/31/2010 6:15:22 PM)

Snopes lists the four times Reagan missed Arlington, but I wasn't able to cut and paste the text.

I don't understand what you mean by this, Lucy. I also have no clue about the mad rantings of Glenn Beck (I assume that's who you mean). You'll have to find someone else to talk about him with. Cucko, maybe?
