ORIGINAL: Owner59 Is "poor neighborhood" some kind of leftist "code" for "black?" Nope, unfortunately, it`s the harshest of realities. Someday, I`m going to start a thread asking why African Americans are still behind in so many areas and yet such a high % of them are in jail or on probation. Another day tho and hopefully without the demagogerists spoiling the discussion. . Owner, I have your answer; DRUGS! More stereotyping horseshit. “If you were to ask the person on the street what the typical drug user looks like, they would probably describe to you somebody who is African American and male,” says Dr. Martha Hurley, an associate professor of political science and criminal justice at the Citadel. She says when it comes to drugs and race perception is not reality. “We know that based on data there are relatively small differences between blacks and whites in their use of illicit substances,” says Hurley. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration conducts the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). According to the most recent 2006 survey about 49 percent of whites admit to illicit drug use at some point in their life, while 43 percent of blacks admit the same. When it comes to regular use of marijuana there is only about a 1 percent difference on who uses. The surveys from 2004-2005 say that nationally 6.2 % of whites used marijuana in the past month, while 7.3% for blacks. Hurley says the data raises an important question: if whites and blacks are using drugs at relatively similar rates, how is it possible 3 quarters of the population of people who are in prison for drug related crimes are African Americans? Researcher Dr. Jon Gettman of Shenandoah University analyzes crime data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. He estimates that in some places blacks are about 3 times more likely than whites to be arrested for possession of marijuana. According to Gettman’s website Drugscience.org the State of South Carolina’s marijuana possession arrest rate between 1995 to 2007 went from 247 to 273 per 100,000 people among whites. During the same time period he found that among blacks the rate went from 297 to 678 per 100,000 people. Gettman found agencies in Charleston County reporting 2007 marijuana possession arrest rates were 431 per 100,000 among whites, and 1,271 per 100,000 among blacks. “In the African American community it’s known that whites are using drugs just as much but not being arrested as much and it creates negative feelings,” says Hurley. She says one of the reasons for the disparity with arrests is that police are more often patrolling minority neighborhoods known for high crime where drug dealers and users are relatively easy to spot." http://www2.counton2.com/cbd/news/local/article/reality_of_race_unequal_consequences_among_races_for_illegal_drugs/133648/ Can you admit that you are wrong? Can you admit that white cops profile black males? Can you admit that white judges sentence blacks more harshly? Dubble, "police are more often patroling minority neighborhoods known for high crime where drug dealers and users are relatively easy to spot." Gee, no kidding? If people in any neighborhoods (wearn't) pushing and using drugs they wouldn't be (shudder) "caught" for that, would they? Should we tell the police to stay out of "high crime" neighborhoods then? What would people say about that? Can you imagine the uproar? I live in Myrtle Beach, S. Carolina , I'm origionally from Boston, Mass one of the "bluest of blue states." I think marijuana (should) be legalized. But does anyone think we should legalize Heroin, Crack or Meth? Those drugs cause people to steal, do armed robberies, kill people etc. And look at the damage Alcohol does! People who do those things are a menace to society and dangerous! Does it really matter what their skin color or racial background is? If you're working in a gas station do you really care who walks in and sticks a gun in your face and robs you because they need money to buy drugs? You have to realize that there are more black people who live in SC than whites. So right off the hop the statistics are going to be scuewed. As for "profiling" wouldn't the cops go,..."where the drugs are?" "Where the crime is?" If there's an area that has a lot of late night bars and they catch a lot of people for DUI's should we tell the police to stay away from that area? Here's an idea, why not don't drive drunk and don't use drugs? Then, ...you don't have to worry about all that stuff, right? "In the African-American community it's known that whites are using drugs just as much but not being arrested as much and it creates negative feelings." Oh REALLY? So, if they could be *assured* that more white people would be arrested for drugs then those "negative feelings" would dissapear,...right? You know, if, as a white bankrobber I found out that the cops were arresting *more* black bankrobbers than whites it just wouldn't make (me) feel all warm and fuzzy inside! That'd be a threat to *all* in my craft! "Dr. Jon Gettman" eh? Is he getting any Taxpayer dollars for this "study?" I started this thread to talk about "community organizers." And look where we end up. Hijack City!
