of course the oil companies dont produce it so why use it?

The Gulf cannot support enough bacteria to do the job in 6 weeks.

LadyCimarron -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 5:34:59 AM)

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing it.  At least we have a way of cleaning up this mess and who cares if it takes longer than six weeks at least it won't take a decade or longer.

Louve00 -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 6:45:29 AM)

I thought heartcream brought up this microbe thing the other day...  http://www.collarchat.com/m_3234096/tm.htm

I saw a piece last night about the Exxon-Valdez spill that happened in 1989.  They showed where shoveling just inches (literally inches) under the ground by the shore, all these years later, still digs up oil covered rock that (they say) smells tarry.  People from that area who made a living from the sea said their life has never been the same since.

The youtube video says that it is oil that supports the microbes not the gulf.
Do you have any evidence that this process will not or cannot do what the video says it will?

Real0ne -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 6:51:03 AM)

sigh

I guess I didnt see her post

so you are saying it does not work?

arent they pumping benzene another petroleum product to disperse the slick?

Oil is biodegradable over time by nature itself is it not?

mnottertail -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 6:54:22 AM)

takes millions of years to make it, so its half life..............

Louve00 -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 6:54:27 AM)

I have no clue whether it will or won't.  I'm just wondering if they tried this microbe thing up in Alaska, where people are still seeing the effects of a oil spill that is not as large as the gulf's oil leak.  The people in Alaska seemed pretty sold on the fact that the gulf life is changed forever, now.

Aneirin -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 7:01:23 AM)

Given the oil is an organic substance, it seems plausible that microbes could live in it, thrive in it and get rid of it, but what effect does this microbe have on sea life, could we be trading one disaster for another ?

The microbes in questions are aerobic bacteria i.e. they need oxygen to live. Putting massive amounts of these bacteria into the Gulf would result in some oil broken down and almost all the oxygen in the water being consumed. Which would kill off all the maribe life we're trying to save.

I ma sure of it.

It takes several generations to put an eco system back in order if ever.

Then you never really know.  Big money has a way of creating accidents to shift sales to other areas, create shortages to boost profits etc etc etc.

Never know what is truly an accident and what is planned and staged as an accident in the name of business.

It works but takes a very long time.

I don't know where they came up with the six weeks.

There were some good explanations on the other thread that was linked to above.

Or you can Google bio-remediation.

It did not seem to kill the shrimp in the test tank in the video.

pahunkboy -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 8:18:13 AM)

I doubt the spill was planned.

I do think there were dumb short cuts taken.

Maybe you noticed that this was a tiny amount of oil, only enough to create a thin sheen, in a shallow pond? Maybe you noticed the bacteria only ate the oil products that were lighter than water? To get all the crude spilled into the gulf would require bacteria below the water's surface which would deplete the oxygen supply if enough were used to actually quickly biodegrade the amount of oil we're dealing with.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Gulf Oil Spill-Gutsy Solution Restores Environment in Just Six Weeks (6/2/2010 8:23:25 AM)

I'm thinking of spilling a cup of motor oil on my driveway, wiping it up with a roll of paper towels, and putting the video up on Youtube. When BP sees it, they'll send me a check for a billion dollars, and I'll be rich.

I for one do not believe in experts making "dumb" mistakes.

I believe in negligence and fraud.
