ok- facebook is first and last name.

But what about what is said under a screen name?

If you think the firing should still stand - via a screen name- I find that chilling.

She used her real name - that was stupid.

If she'd used a screen name, she would most likely have been fine.

As for the firing - yes, it was warranted. She broke the terms and conditions of employment. Nobody forced her to take the job, and no-one held her at gunpoint to sign the contract. She did it willingly and of her own free will. If she did so without reading it thoroughly, then that's her fault. It's got nothing to do with being an atheist - it's all to do with her being dumb.

If in the majority of the sates of this Union you can get fired for being a homo I wold think the same might hold true for being an atheist.

I don't really care enough to do the research....However, If I worked within the walls of some sort of a religious organization I definitely would have taken the time to igure this one out.

It's fun to see how dumb people can be.

I agree.

Using her real name was pretty much biting the hand that feeds her.

However- a screen name- IMO she should be free to say what she did.

Since they're Catholics, shouldn't they just forgive her? I think they have to.

...although you'd have thought that someone smart enough to teach maths could figure out how to use a screen name properly

This is why your prayers have gone unanswered, you've not been doing it in algebra.

but I prayed to pythagoras AND Fibonnacci!

Bastards weren't listening, obviously. Humph.

That's it - I am now officially an atheist*!

She wasn't fired for being incompetent in her *job*. She was fired (at least according to what we know) for violating the terms of her employment.

I don't understand how this is so difficult to grasp.

Does forgive mean letting her be a loose cannon?   As in a chance to do it again?

Many corporations protect their image and names in this manner. Moral clauses abound. A screen name will only protect you if you dont bring up the place where you work, live, people you associate with, ect. Once you drag a company into the blog, you are open to all speculations said company wants to impose upon you.

WTF!

Teaching math ( "the language of Reality" ) by a christian can not meet high level teaching standards.

Would anyone ever even considering declaring christian faith a disqualifier for a teaching job? What if it was a secular private school that fired this teacher for being catholic? Would that be ok?

I basically posted this as a response to a thread from a while ago where it was stated that since the ruling that atheism counted the same as a religion, people couldn't be fired for being atheist. Apparently not the case, the discrimination against us is alive and well.

I think you should have read your own link.

She wasn't fired for having a facebook account.  She wasn't fired for being atheist.  She was fired for advocating atheism.  "fired by the school board for violating a policy that prohibits employees from advocating "principles contrary" to the teachings of the church."   She did this when she joined Atheist Nexus, a social network that bills itself as site for "nontheists."  She said she registered on the site on her personal computer at home. She noted a New York Times' article reporting the government had spent $2.3 million on prayer research since 2000 and added the link.   We are not told what exactly she was posting about but it could be fairly safe to opine that she was complaining about government spending on prayer research.  Had she said something to the effect that prayer was a crock,  she would have easily been advocating principles contrary to the teaching of the church.

How hard is this to understand??

If she were a neo Nazi and working for a Jewish organization should she be forgiven?

If she were a Registered Democrat should she be secretary for the Republican party?

If she were working for an anti abortion group should she be forgiven if pro abortion?

If she is working for the NRA should she be forgiven for being anti gun?

On and on… just plain common sense I believe.

Abby Nurre worked as a math teacher at St. Edmonds Catholic School and was fired for joining a social networking site for nontheists.

"The main thing is that she stated she didn't believe in God," (spokeswoman for the Sioux City Diocese) Arlt said.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2010-05-29-fired28_ST_N.htm

I've heard claims recently that this sort of discrimination doesn't happen anymore but yeah it's still around.

Would this be like,....."Cop fired for being a theif?"

Eyes,  so my posts here would crash my job??

How unfair is that?

In my job it can also happen....not currently as I am a student and so under no employer rules, but some of my co-students are studying employment-based and have in their contract written that they would not allow them to participate on facebook, etc....

A good math teacher should be at least agnostic. It should be noticed the language of "Reality" often precedes empirical science.  It suggests structure, a blueprint.
