Heavier platters would warrant a steeper tip.

But lighter salads would mean a lesser tip.

Good Thinking!!! And my posts get pulled

Yeah, hold your breath and wait for 'em to rewrite the tax law like that, pa. If they ever did, you would be the first one bitching that your food is cold because the server had to weigh the order for tax purposes before bringing it to you.

It's been explained over and over in this thread that servers are taxed based on a percentage of their total sales, not the tips they actually receive. If you stiff a server on the tip, you have literally made him/her pay for the 'honor' of serving your whiny, complaining ass.

I voted for Ron Paul.  he will abolish the IRS.

lets not obsess over the tax rates.

Easy to say when it isn't your paycheck getting dinged, pa.

Dad used to say, you have to make the money before worrying about the tax.

WyldHrt -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 9:37:38 PM)

'Dad' apparently wasn't a server. What I'm trying to get through your head is that when servers get stiffed on tips, they are taxed on money they didn't get in the first place.
I'm quite done with you on this subject, pa. You can continue to pontificate on what should be all day long, your pipe dreams are not how things currently work for servers in most of the US.

Why is expensive food heavier to carry?

steak vs chicken- if it is same weight- then why should the tip be more?

The amount of effort to deliver food has little to do with its weight, but with a host of other factors, such as condiments and such. For example, serving a baked potato requires the server to add sour cream, butter, and green onions to the potato in the amounts a customer requests. Opening a bottle of wine requires the server to open it at the table, let thw customer examine the cork, taste the wine and then the server has to pour it in each glass. Certain desserts are lit on fire.... time is money, not weight. It is the amount of time a table takes that should determine the tip.... which is reflected in the bill, because the more a table orders, the more time they take. Weight has nothing to do with it

Vendaval -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/9/2010 8:54:22 AM)

By this logic how about charging customers by weight too? I mean come on now, we could weigh them when they come in and back on the scales they go before leaving. Better yet, don't let them use the bathroom to empty their bladders or bowels at the restaurant so we can squeeze the last penny out off their cheap asses!

(sarcasm people, sarcasm!)

--  what are we paying for then?

those trays look heavy.     it makes sense to tie the tip to the weight.

Pa?... what's the big deal, it's only paper, leave em a nice tip.

Someone Actually asked What is marked into the Price of a Meal?

The Decorations, the Seats the Chairs the TV's in the Bar if there is one, the Meals that cost more so that some meals can cost less, the Bathrooms, the Hot Water, the Wages of the Chefs who cook it and make much better wages that the wait staff, the trucks that delivered the food and billed the restraunt for that, Take a 360 look around a restraunt and that is what your $8 to $30 meal is paying for.

The servers are paid less because it is customary to tip them, and othewise the cost of the meals would go up.

This is also the reason that I would not be a server I know you can make great money doing it bit I could not rely on the amount of money that I would be making and could not risk not knowing what my bottom line was.

I don't leave tips out of pity because the waitresses don't make enough or get taxed, that is an issue between them and their employers or them and the IRS. Its NOT a customer's issue. Sorry folks but you are looking at the wrong people to make things RIGHT for you. If i have a problem with my salary, i go to my employer's NOT my clients. If i have a problem with what i am being taxed on, i go to the IRS, NOT my clients.

I am a person who enjoys tipping for good service. I don't do it because i MUST or HAVE TO or OWE the server something. This mentality on this thread has really disgusted me. I am a customer, the only thing i OWE is what the establishment charges me for their product. They offer the wait staff as part of that product. My choice again its a CHOICE to tip and how much i do, is not a MUST and i can tell you this much, if i ever encounter a wait person who makes me feel as if i MUST tip them or i OWE them something, they won't get anything and i will be speaking with the OWNER not just the MANAGER of the store. YES, it is customary and a good thing to do to show your appreciation, but it's not OWED. Which is why i am having a really hard time with people saying if people can only afford the price of the establishment charges then they should just stay home. Bullshit. How tacky can you be. Yes, it would be better if they could scratch up a tip, but sorry, i don't think they should just not eat out if they can't afford the tip. That is why you get a salary or someone who over tips -- i would say it would average out so that someone who can't afford a tip can have a luxury once in a while to eat out and enjoy themselves and what the establishment offers (i.e., part of which is the WAIT STAFF).

I think people need to stop and remember that being a wait staff person is their choosen JOB. While tipping is customary, they only person who OWES you money for your services is your EMPLOYER. If you don't get paid enough take it up with them. Your customers are not there as pseudo employers who OWE you payment for services rendered, your services are PART of what the establishment OFFERS to its customer -- if you choose to tip the wait staff for their services its usually appreciated but umm no, they will not stop you on your way out saying ohhhhh, you forgot to pay your wait staff person and therefore, owe them money.

I find it odd, that most wait staff don't project this attitude on the customers, so why have it in the background? Because you know they really don't OWE you anything and if you remotely gave the impression they did, you wouldn't get tipped much of anything i am betting.

Here is the way it was explained to me, the owner of the restaurant pays me to keep his tables clean, do sidework (yes, waitresses must fill condiments, rotate food, etc) and to mediate between the cook and the customer. The customer is paying me to "serve" them, meaning that they get more than their food tossed in a paper bag in a disposable container.... they get their plates removed as they eat, they get beverages delivered and refilled, etc... Ideally the customer should not know a server exists unless they want to engage the server as a social person. The server knows the menu, the server knows the wine list, the server should know what drinks go with what meals, and what desserts are best with which liqueurs... in other words, the server is supposed to be paid about their knowledge of the cuisine, and a smart server knows this. I made good money as a dinner house server

You are easily disgusted and bent out of shape.

It seems to be a habit in your posting style to be revolted, offended, and disgusted much of the time.... how is that working for you?

I'm not tacky enough to go to a restaurant, take a table from a server, and then not tip them for their service... I was just taught if I can't afford the service I shouldn't accept it....it is "tacky" to do otherwise.... people who stiff are tacky

I never saw a person intentionally sabotage food, and if I had I would have reported that person. It never even occurred to me to do something like that.... ever

These are the types of servers i really love. I love when i can be talking and blink and my glass is refilled and i didn't even realize they had done so. I love when you can continue a conversation while they put the food in front of you with sides of whispered thank yous.

Most places are just the opposite, i get really annoyed when you are deep into a conversation and eating -- not looking for anything but at the person you are speaking with kind of talking -- and the waitress interupts the conversation all in your face asking if everything is okay and they do this every 5 minutes or so it seems. I always indicate when they do this that i will let them know if we need anything. I like attentive service but i don't like interupting service.

I was once took a friend out for her bday and you barely noticed the server etc. When it came to a tip my girlfriend said, oh don't give too much because they were never around. I looked up in surprise because i knew they were very attentive and asked if she needed something that she didn't get or such and she said no. i smiled and said because she was around more than you realized and she thought for a second and realized she never had an empty glass, she didn't notice her plates being taken away or served etc.

barely

barely, the only thing disgusting in this thread is your ignorance as to how these people make a living.

how can you be so thick and dense?

I am fairly confident that since you only eat at buffets or fast food restaurants that tipping hopefully does not fall upon your shoulders too often.

Please never go out for dinner. You once again prove yourself to be a very poor example of a human being.
