I always leave a tip even if bad service but excellent service will receive 25%…good service 20% and average 15% poor 10% and a note to the supervisor.

But what is Good service at a restaurant? To me:

First an honest wait time if crowded

Be sure the temperature in the restaurant is set for the patrons and not the workers. There is nothing more frustrating than needing to wear a coat while you eat.

A clean table when seating

Prompt service

If the service will be slow I expect the waitress or waiter to let me know up front. And occasionally check on the progress of the order and report it to me.

A server knowledgeable friendly and or courteous.

Get the order correct and served to the proper guest...if a mistake is made then promptly corrected with perhaps a visit of apology from a supervisor or a complimentary drink or charge reduction.

Be unobstructive but keep plates removed and drinks filled.

THE MOST IMPORTANT…a good server will when moving to or from their area of responsibility will look at every table. Nothing makes a patron feel more important then to be able to look up…find their server and raise a hand for service.

Properly judge the time to suggest dessert

Do not let your patrons wait for you to decide when to bring the bill.

Continue to offer service even after the bill is tendered.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something but it covers the basics to good service and if I were a server it is how I would expect to earn a good tip.

i dont think anyone deserves tips over and above their salary. i never got any tips ever. Why should others and more importantly why should i part with what little cash i have when i can barely afford to eat out and no more. The answer is above a bill i shouldnt and wont

I tip 10-20% for restaurant service and complain to management if the service and/or food is terrible. On the rare occasions where food is sent back I am polite to the service person and ask them to replace the burnt to a crisp or under cooked item.

One of the rare times I did not tip at all was when dealing with a local pizza parlor where the guy was completely stoned and messed up the entire order.

Just my personal preference, but...I don't want my waiter or waitress to sit down at the table, introductions, chit chat, etc. Sorry. [:(]

Also, another personal peeve: I hate a "no problem" in response to my or my kids' "thank you."

Finally, there used to be a web site called "kissmybitterass.com" which detailed the horrifying and hilarious antics of patrons--often celebrities--from the POV of waiters and waitresses. It was an eye opener in terms of what they go through. It's apparently gone now, likely due to slander threats.

lobodomslavery -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/7/2010 1:49:01 PM)

i disagree. finances are tight now. a couple might be barely able to afford the meal and no more. Sorry but in a recession things like tipping staff and giving extra on top of the bill is for the chop.  People who dont tip are just as entitled to eat out as people who do. There should be no guilt about this.it is personal choice. there is no right or wrongs here

Lol, I also had that happen to me at a pizza parlor. Oh well, I study in the Netherlands, so I'm used to being serviced by stoned people, but this one was annoying cause he kept messing up the orders, but every course he had to come check, and we were the only customers in there. When we got our dessert, two more couples/families entered and I was like "This guy is seriously going to lose his shit now."

i take umbrage at the term cheapskate. Rather than label why not analyse why they are as you term cheapskate, what are the circumstances that have brought this about, don t be so fucking judgmental
kevin

You can find it insulting all you want. The term "cheapskate" is used because the person typically has no problem being a complete asshole to their server and making them run themselves ragged and then leaving a crappy tip.

A server in the US is working almost exclusively for tips. Do you expect your doctor to work for free? Your cable guy? Do you want internet for free? Not have to pay for gas in your car? Eating out is a LUXURY, not a necessity. If you are going to treat the wait staff poorly, then don't be surprised if you get the "basic" service and none of the extras that will improve your dining experience.

And as has been said over and over, if you can't afford to tip, then stay home.

What does that have to do with a server who gives you good service deserving a tip? The tip is for good service not to pay the server, her pay and her tips are two completely different things.

Well, the dishes are already more expensive, ergo tip included over here. They don't live on their tips either over here. I wouldn't tip a friendly cashier, nor do I pay 20% extra if my haircut worked out at the barber and I had a nice chat. Plus, waiters should give good service because it's their job, not for a tip. If you're an unfriendly waiter in my uncle's restaurant, you get fired, not a smaller tip...

Obviously from the comments on this thread, most of us are coming from the US, where making tips IS the majority of your salary. I understand that servers in the majority of Europe are paid a living wage and that is great. But keep in mind if you ever came to the US and decided to eat in a restaurant, the same theory does not apply.

To be honest, your attitude is why most US servers hate to wait on Europeans. Some when they find out what American servers make will adjust their tip accordingly. Most, and you do appear to be one of them, don't care that the server doesn't make a living wage and will still tip like shit. Good service may be PART of the job (certainly not all of it), but no one is doing the job out of the goodness of their hearts. We are in there to make money.

I know how tips in restaurants work in the US, I just honestly never heard of tipping in any other profession, and certainly not a barber.

Perhaps because you are young and weren't taught properly. You should be tipping the room service people when you stay in a hotel (if you order room service). The maids who clean your room. The same is true if you go on a cruise somewhere. You should tip your baggage carriers at the airport, at the hotel, etc. You should tip your cab driver. If you live in a building with a door man, you should tip him yearly for his services. You should tip a valet who gets your car and as already mentioned, the person who cuts your hair as well.

Ever think there is a reason why Europeans have such a horrible reputation in the US?

pahunkboy -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/7/2010 9:26:27 PM)

Lets re-cap-

when someone fails to tip- they should be ticketed.

Vendaval -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/7/2010 10:50:59 PM)

Fast Reply -

And remember in the US servers are taxed out of their expected percentage of tips thanks to former Pres. Reagan. At some establishments the busperson (table cleaners) and other staff also receive a percentage of the tips the servers receive.

IMO, if you cannot afford to tip then you cannot afford to eat out at a place that brings the food directly to your table. Either go the fast food or deli route or eat at home.

In Ireland, they pay the staff minimum. In the US, they dont After a few visits, you would end up with a serving staff that would refuse to take you as a table. You dont have to tip me. I also dont have to wait on you. That is my right as well.

MissAsylum -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 2:43:39 AM)

Kevin- no. Just NO. when somebody can barely afford a sit down meal but no tip- guess what? they can STILL afford the MEAL. maybe the wage system is different over ther- but since you LOVE to speak in general terms- waiters and waitress' don't get paid minimum wage. they work for TIPS. the average wait staff member makes $3.20. so really, how would anybody tip them less than that? Eating out is a LUXURY. an EXTRA. you don't need to eat out to survive. I spent 36.67 on a sit down breakfast yesterday and tipped 9 dollars and my dinner cost 52.04 with a 14 dollar tip for excellent service at both places. now without tip, i could have spent that 88.71 on a WEEK and a half worth of groceries. but i didn't. Why? Because i can afford to. I've been in the situation where i couldn't eat out when i wanted to, so i spent my $160 per month budget on food on 84 meals(eating 3 times a day) THAT I COOKED AT HOME. boo-fucking-hoo that times are tight and you can't afford to leave a damn tip. Get over it.
