Like I said some folks is showing their true colors...

Cyndi Lauper sings in the background.

Another thing to be considered, there are quite a few people who base the merits of a potential date on the tipping ability or lack thereof.

Bad tippers are lonely losers.

i disagree. finances are tight now. a couple might be barely able to afford the meal and no more. Sorry but in a recession things like tipping staff and giving extra on top of the bill is for the chop.  People who dont tip are just as entitled to eat out as people who do. There should be no guilt about this.it is personal choice. there is no right or wrongs here

In Ireland, they pay the staff minimum. In the US, they dont After a few visits, you would end up with a serving staff that would refuse to take you as a table. You dont have to tip me. I also dont have to wait on you. That is my right as well.

As a former waiter, all I have to say is, dont fuck with the people that touch your food. We will feel free to mess with you back

ETA: Dont fuck with your pizza guy either. We all carry guns, whether or not we're "allowed" to.

agreed. was on a date where the man left 3 dollar tip for $70+ meal. that was last time the person saw me.

Ever think there is a reason why Europeans have such a horrible reputation in the US?

Well, you see it this way, I have to say in this context that I prefer the European system to pay the minimum wage, so the staff isn't dependent on the tips in the first place...and in regards to other tips here and there...I pay them when I consider them as being appropriate...eg last year I stayed in a hotel in tenerife where I had an incredible room service and I left a generous tip for her...however that does not mean I pay tips just because I am supposed to do so...if it is expected in certain countries then I do and I do inform myself before I go over there, however the amount still depends on the service and nothing else.

And in regards to Europeans such a horrible reputation...well, so what? I am quite picky at times in regards to judging service, mainly due to my upbringing as that was always high on the agenda from my dad (as for him in his store it was important to deliver great customer service, eg when customers had to wait more than 5 minutes to pay their items and that was the case because not all cashdesks were opened, then they were entitled to 5 euro, as there he did not deliver the best service for his customers, however if all cashdesks were in use then there is nothing he could do about...and so him expecting a good service for his customers in his store meant that he also regular judged the service he received which I the observed all my life whilst living at home). However, when a tip is not necessarily expected, such as in many other countries outside of the US, then I am rarely the most generous person about it...after all, depends on the service...I prefer to be generous when the service is great, and to be able to be generous to those who truly earns it I don' waste too much tip on the ones who certainly don't deserve it...simple.

In regards on judging a partner how he tips...thats seriously my last worry about a partner...[:D]

I think watching how a person i am with tips tells me a lot about them. I also pay attention to how they treat the staff.

I agree. How the waitstaff is tipped is a big factor to me. If hes cheap with the waiter/waitress then it shows how generous he is in a lot of things including his heart.

MissAsylum -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 5:41:49 AM)

take note that the majority of us who do tip have said something along the lines of "i tip__%, depending on the service."Europeans get a bad reputation because good service is expected no matter what- regardless if the customer is rude or not, and there is a miniscule tip left, if one at all, typically.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 5:45:51 AM)

Being a former waitress I also know that there are times the service is the best the person can do. If the place is so busy and your wait person has 5 tables or more that showed up all at once we do our best. Also if the kitchen is slow thats not the wait staffs fault. I always felt more pressure when a person said,"take your time".I always interpreted that as "hurry up"!

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 6:12:53 AM)

I am on a fixed budget but if I can't afford to leave a tip I don't eat out. I get take out or cook at home. Infact at a couple of local restruants that we regular I am known for leaving tips even on carry-out orders. I tend to tip at least 20%, if the service was better or I am a regular I tip more. If the service was bad, not only do I tip less but I make the server and their manager aware of my issues. I even make sure that when ordering in, I can give the delivery person a decent tip. If there is a "required" gratitue that is all they get, they have already told me what their service is worth. Often times they loose out. When I used to go to a local night club regularly, the bar tenders always got on average $1 per drink.

There are certain things I am picky about when I eat out but I always try to give the staff the opportunity to remedy the problem. If the service is so bad that you can't or wont leave a tip then simply don't give them repeat business.

I have come to realize that the restraunts I regular not only appreaciate the repeat business but the referalls given. Not only to the restraunt itself but to the wait staff. (yes i often brag about how good service is at various restraunts). Often time I have been given free deserts or drink or something of that nature as a thank you by the management. Its never expected but it makes me as a faithful costumer feel appreciated just like tips and repeat business make them feel appreciated.

ETA: if my date doesnt leave a tip I will and he will probably not being going with me again

Why is expensive food heavier to carry?

steak vs chicken- if it is same weight- then why should the tip be more?

You might want to reconsider this pov.

Well when in Rome do what the Romans do. if in the US, i would either give a tip or go to McDonalds. The US system is unfair, the Irish system is right

True, but, how many jobs can you go into with little "formal" education and make 250+ and work only 5 hours?

Vendaval -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 1:43:31 PM)

How a person treats service staff anywhere can show their under lying attitudes and ways to treating other people in general. Someone who is uptight and cheap gets on my nerves really fast and is shown the door. In contrast, a person who is friendly and polite and tips appropriately scores positive points.

I think this is the way I see it. I love that saying, it is not how one treats those that have power that measures their character, but those that they perceive as having less power than they do.

I would find someone that treated people that have less power in a poor way as someone who would treat me in a similar fashion once they had power over me. Being a submissive person this has particular relevance to me and my choice of partners

Steel had some great stories about what restaurant employees do to nasty customers. "Chef's surprise" does not even begin to cover the possibilities!

People should tip by weight.

WyldHrt -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 8:36:18 PM)

Cool idea, pa. I'll start tipping by weight the split second my servers get taxed on their anticipated tips by the weight of the order, rather than the price. Should be any minute now. [8|]

pahunkboy -> RE: How much do you tip your waitress? (6/8/2010 9:00:37 PM)

Heavier platters would warrant a steeper tip.

But lighter salads would mean a lesser tip.
