I have looked over on the political forum and it is full of oil spill threads.... It got me to wondering about something, are we so divided in this country politically that no one thought to bring that topic on this forum?

I do not think that this is a political issue. We lost 11 human beings in that explosion, and a good portion of our coastline looks to be spoiled for generations. I do not think it matters what your political affiliation is, it is an epic tragedy for this entire nation.

I feel this sense of impotence in the face of this thing and my heart weeps for not only my countrymen along the coast, but for the marine life in the Gulf...

I wanted to post this here in a nonpolitical way, not to cast blame or to yell at each other, but to share how powerless I feel, and wondering if there are others that feel that way but do not want to get into the R v D debate.

It's a highly political issue.

After eight (8) years of the Bush administration, which staunchly opposed "regulation" and let business interests actually select the regulatory heads in our federal government --- its no wonder safety regulations weren't in place when Obama took office. Furthermore, in his quest for bipartisanship and centrism, Obama did not clean house with the federal agencies that regulate big oil, and he also capitulated to the drill-baby-drill crowd.

So, this oil spill is a political-governmental failure.

As I see it Republican policies have failed the nation all over the place:

(1) Not regulating the financial sector and neutering the SEC contributed to an economic meltdown.

(2) Tax cuts have not been the private sector driven, economic panacea promised. The US economy ran aground awash in tax cuts.

(3) Unbridled militarism has been both expensive and costly. The IRAQ war has cost us $1 Trillion Dollars.

---------

What policies in the Republican bag of tricks will protect Americans going forward? What lesson has the Republican party learned from their failures?

Government needs to play a role in American society -- in a fashion other than national defense and law enforcement. How exactly do the Republicans plan to expand their sights beyond these two points?

And what about the bully pulpit (Obama) -- to get on Americans to do their part an conserve more energy, ride more public transport, and get away from their beloved gas guzzling automobiles?

Yes, we need to clean up the spill, but more importantly we need to look to the causes of the spill and make some permanent changes in our policies.

This oil spill is Obamas engineering from the start. He wants to dictate American policy on all aspects of life what better way to get smart cars than to make petroleum too damn expensive to get. What better way to stop offshore drilling for ever than this disaster. His pretessor Bill Clinton signed all land able to safely produce oil or coal to permeate off limits. By the way both Democrats and we now have Obhama care too. By the time he leaves office this country will be just what Bill and he want it.Heaven smart cars no crime no guns no hunting lots of free ranging wild hogs and wild game as man is the top predatory  don't worry about them they have armed secret service paid by you to protect them from the gun less criminals.

My point was about how we feel about this topic as human beings and not as political pundits

Considering the response so far I suppose many people do not have feelings without connecting political affiliation... which is about as sad as the spill itself

Not about being powerless in the face of the spill or what a tragedy it is for all Americans

I'd love to see us come together as a people and do something about this.

Most of the threads on this topic are in the political section with a bunch of finger pointing... that isn't going to solve this thing

Julia, this is a loaded subject. Made more so by people who are hypersensitive, and blind to their own prejudices.

As I illustrated with my link, there have been threads outside P&R, but since so many angles of this lead quickly into politics and religion, that's where most of the conversation has been.

Good grief, you specifically say you don't want to discuss politics about the situation in this thread and the first two replies were nothing but political - such that I skimmed over and stopped reading, because I thought a non-political conversation would be refreshing.  Oh well.

Yes, it's horrible.  What happened to people, creatures and vegetation is heart-breaking.  I've actually found myself avoiding hearing about it from time to time, because it's too big for me to process.

Which locks people not into petty arguments out of the discussion because they do not go to that forum.

I know my heart isn't the only broken one over this. I know republican citizens are just as distraught as I am over what is happening in the Gulf...

This thing is easily as epic as 911

If they allowed citizens to aid in the cleanup I would go

I would give my time away in a second, but I would not take a BP paycheck

As far as petty arguments... all forums have them, but politics and religion is a cesspool

You are in luck then. "Oil spill cleanup volunteer" produced over 8 million hits. Have a great summer, and don't let a pelican poke you in the boob.

Bon voyage!

If my son and I go I will have my laptop and my cellphone camera.. I will post pics on here of what is going on

From what I have heard... they aren't allowing volunteers to go down there because of the toxicity of the spill,..

Sorry, this oil spill goes deep into American politics and culture. Things promise to get worse going forward, as the demand for oil increases and the availability of it becomes more scarce.

Why do you think we invaded IRAQ? Why are we constantly messing with the Middle East? Look at the size of the automobiles we drive. Look at the underdevelopment of our public transportation. Look at the decay of many of our cities. Look at the explosion of suburbia. Look at the money lobbyists can spend to buy political policies.

Canada's banking system did not collapse. Its deep oil wells must dig a reserve well in advance of disasters. How come they've been ahead of us on both of these curves?

Yes cloudboy, the oil spill does go deep into politics.  And there's a politics forum to discuss that aspect of it.  The OP here is to discuss the non-politic aspects of it, which still exist.

I'd like to talk about volunteering in some way, and ways we can all help the wildlife

It seems a more productive way look at what is happening

Productive in that it's actually doing, rather than talking and pointing blame.  So what are our options?  I have a friend who works for an oil company in Texas - a super cool woman.  I'll email her since she may have some ideas from an "up close and personal" perspective.
