The trouble with using microbes is that when they eat oil they multiply. I know that should seem a good thing, but they also suck the oxygen out of the water, that is a bad thing. In fact it will cause dead zones in the gulf with a spill this size.

I agree it is an important piece of the puzzle in cleaning the oil out (especially out of the wetlands), but it is not the only thing we should do...

I'm afraid dead zones are going to be completely unavoidable, whatever we do.  They work so fast, they might at least prevent further catastrophe.  And definitely in the wetlands.

No, it wouldn't be fixed by now.  Because the only cure for failures like this, to date, is to drill one (or more) relief wells.  Just look what happened in the Timor Sea (the Montara spill) last year (requiring 5 attempts to fix), or the Ixtoc I spill back in '79 in the Gulf of Mexico (required 3 attempts).

These are incredible pressures, at extreme depth, and there was no contingency planning on BP's part in this case.

I've heard there aren't anywhere near enough microbes to clean this spill, and while they work well with diluted or low viscosity oil, they won't work well anyway on the "mousse" (oil/water emulsion) that's washing up.  It won't burn well either.

If this happened overseas our Gov't would send out the troops & have it fixed by now.......

The images I can`t get out of my head are of a bunch of pelicans who were covered in oil and who had gotten into their crouched up gathered in sleeping position and died that way.A bunch of poor brown sad statues.

I hear that in Canada, they require back-up wells before beginning extraction.Apparently,it is back-up wells that we`re waiting for now,for the final fix of BP`s leaker. Those back-up wells are being drilled now.

Why don`t we require the use of back-up wells here in the US?

BP is hiring. I'm certain of it.

I would give my time away in a second, but I would not take a BP paycheck

As far as petty arguments... all forums have them, but politics and religion is a cesspool

I didn't read all 4 pages of this thread (yet), so if someone already suggested this, I apologize.....

If you and your son ARE available to go, TAKE the BP paycheck!  You can always donate it back into the cause, but this way BP has to cover you for things like medical expenses, workers comp, etc., and you are documented as an employee (probably a contract employee, but you're still documented) that was there at the clean-up and is entitled to any an all benefits available, both in the present and the future.  Go! :)
