In the vast majority of the cases, things work out just fine.

But there are just enough sociopaths out there to make us nervous. As others have said, trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, get out of there.

That's no guarantee that the person you think is harmless won't slip through. Look at all the cases of spousal abuse. Sometimes the dangerous ones still manage to slip through.
