Musicmystery -> Who's to blame for the oil spill? Dick Cheney. (6/10/2010 8:46:51 PM)

"The Gulf of Mexico oil spill could end up being the worst American man-made environmental catastrophe of this generation. With the oil still spilling and investigations into the causes yet to come, it's too early to neatly assign blame to any one person. But for now, let's hold Dick Cheney personally responsible for the whole thing.

"Here's the evidence: The Wall Street Journal reports that the oil well didn't have a remote-control shut-off switch. The reason it didn't have a thing that it seems every single offshore drilling rig should have? According to environmental lawyer Mike Papantonio, it's because Dick Cheney's energy task force decided that the $500,000 switches were too expensive, and they didn't want to make BP buy any.

"Is that not enough reason to blame the former Dark Lord of the Naval Observatory? Guess what: Halliburton is involved, too! The Los Angeles Times reports that BP contracted Dick Cheney's old company to cement the deepwater drill hole. Cementing the hole was, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, "the single most-important factor in 18 of 39 well blowouts in the Gulf of Mexico over a 14-year period." And Hallburton is already under investigation for faulty cementing in an Australian well last year.

"The spill will very likely destroy the fragile economies of at least five states and it could even plunge the nation back into a recession. So thanks, Dick. Nice work."

Over here, we tend to blame Hitler for everything. Guess it's nice to have an up to date version.

There's a difference between causal links and blind reactions.

Check the linked sources.

Interesting that Cheney was part of an energy task force that decided against demanding BP shell out half a million on remote safety cut off switches and his past (?) company was the one that ballsed up the cementing of the hole on the sea floor of which they are already under investigation for on another balls up off the coast of Australia.

It does sound like conflicting interests here, politicians and their past company interests, an abuse of position perhaps. But whilst everyone is blaming BP, it might just be the criminal in this case is closer to home.

Not sure if I'd call it interesting or not. Just another reason why the coup d'etat of 2000 led us to where we are today

Does the outrage swing only one way?

Try and apply the above post to the following:

quote:

The ties that bind. Remember Rahm Emanuel's rent-free D.C. apartment? The owner: A BP adviser

In case you were tempted to buy the faux Washington outrage at BP and its gulf oil spill in recent days, here's a story that reveals a little-known corporate political connection and the quiet way the inner political circles intersect, protect and care for one another in the nation's capital. And Chicago.

We already knew that BP and its folks were significant contributors to the record $750-million war chest of Barack Obama's 2007-08 campaign.

Now, we learn the details of a connection of Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayoral wannabe, current Obama chief of staff, ex-representative, ex-Clinton money man and ex-Windy City political machine go-fer.

Shortly after Obama's happy inaugural,  eyebrows rose slightly upon word that, as a House member, Emanuel had lived the last five years rent-free in a D.C. apartment of Democratic colleague Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and her husband, Stanley Greenberg.

For an ordinary American, that would likely raise some obvious tax liability questions. But like Emanuel, the guy overseeing the Internal Revenue Service now is another Obama insider, Tim Geithner, who had his own outstanding tax problems but skated through confirmation anyway by the Democratic-controlled Congress.

Remember this was all before the letters BP stood for Huge Mess. Even before the Obama administration gave BP a safety award.

But I guess it's ok to blame the previous administration. Do as I say and not as I do.

Aneirin -> RE: Who's to blame for the oil spill? Dick Cheney. (6/11/2010 6:01:47 AM)

It is a known fact that government are bed fellows to corporations, it is why I have the view that I do, the voting public are only of use in a democratic system that decides a politicians future and of course the taxes they have to pay to enable government to stay pally with their chosen friends.

As far as I am concerned regarding this oil problem, is a corporation and perhaps politicians  have at last been caught out, they have enabled a disaster that will effect the voting public, their livelihood, pleasure and enviroment, all who are involved should be held for criminal negligence and be made to right all the wrongs they have created.

But if government officials are to blame in this, who gets to pick up the eventual tab, if the government are found to be complicit, well, no other than the tax payer as the government represents them.

But perhaps one thing has come out of this that is good, it is not just the conspiracy theorists who are now focusing on the actions of corporations and government.

~FR~
There is plenty of blame to go around.  Why BP was allowed to operate at all is beyond my comprehension.

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bps-dismal-safety-record/story?id=10763042
"In the last five years, investigators found, BP has admitted to breaking U.S. environmental and safety laws and committing outright fraud. BP paid $373 million in fines to avoid prosecution.
BP's safety violations far outstrip its fellow oil companies. According to the Center for Public Integrity, in the last three years, BP refineries in Ohio and Texas have accounted for 97 percent of the "egregious, willful" violations handed out by the Occupational Safety and Health "

There appears to be much more...

So we should turn our lives over to government, in the terms of giving it the keys to our health care, and everything else under the sun?

Am I the only one who finds the spectacle of people who spent the whole of Bush secondus' two stints in office whining about Clinton and Carter demanding that everybody shuts up about him and his twat of a BP now funny?
You couldn't make this crap up...

Musicmystery -> RE: Who's to blame for the oil spill? Dick Cheney. (6/11/2010 6:40:44 AM)

Additionally, there's a world of difference between having some sort of "connection" and being integrally involved, as Cheney was, in decisions that allowed BP to bypass measures that would have prevented this catastrophe.

That's not political gamesmanship--that's direct responsibility, and blame squarely belongs there.

What, because someone held office in the past, they can't be blamed for misdeeds? Come on.

But you'll note it's not Obama blaming Cheney---it's the Wall St. Journal.

Jeffff -> RE: Who's to blame for the oil spill? Dick Cheney. (6/11/2010 6:44:47 AM)

The Wall Street Journal?

That liberal commie rag?

Only Liberal Arts professors and east coast fags read the Journal.

The Jornal's agenda is socialist!

Naw, it just has a lot of readers for whom facts are more useful than spin in their day to day dealings.

I used to work for them in the early 80s, and read it every morning at 3 a.m. when I was in finance. Oh the memories.

I love the way you far left howlers go completely bonkers with all your weak, pathetic insults when you can't get your way in an argument, which is most of the time. You really believe in your hearts that everyone should just step aside and allow you to spread your dirty lies and your mindless propaganda... [:D]

Anyone mentioning that your Messiah took big wads of cash from BP or that his chief of staff was a BP lobbyist or that Obama administration gave BP a safety award just prior to the accident is a heretic against your far left religion - fully warranting a return of medieval inquisitions.

Never change, please - the comedic value is too good to lose. Though its kind of creepy the way you lemmings all seem to think just like Stalin...

Topic here is Cheney's responsibility for killing safety measures that would have prevented the Gulf oil spill.

Not attacks. Direct responsibility, as reported in the OP links.

Thanks.
