Arpig -> 51st state (6/13/2010 5:36:34 PM)

In another thread Owner referred to Canada as the 51st state, which got me thinking...if All of Canada were admitted as a single state then we would be 2nd only to California (and that not by much) in population, and thus we would be a major power block in the House, however if each province/territory were admitted as its own state then that would mean 26 seats in the Senate...a powerful block there...regardless of which way it were done it would throw a major spanner into the works, given that by US standards the vast majority of Canadians are Democrats (if not worse).

Fun to speculate on at any rate.

vincentML -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:42:09 PM)

There would then be no International Border either north or south of us. All the undocumented Latinos would settle in Montreal and no one would understand anyone else.

As you said, fun to speculate, and all I am doing here is playing. [:D]

Nah we need you to vote in the UN...anyway I think we may be better off becoming part of Canada.

pahunkboy -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:43:55 PM)

It really has not been that long ago- before the last 2 states were added.

Owner59 -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:47:25 PM)

It`s mostly a joke.PA was really hammer`n it recently.[:D]

There is always some truth behind any joke,tho.

But seriously,we share so much economically,culturally and socially that there may as well not be a border.The French Canucks put that theory to the test but it rings true mostly.

Good fences make great neighbors,tho.Yes?

Jeffff -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:47:40 PM)

Imagine how those folks in Quebec would feel.....

"We are no longer part of Canada?....YAY!!!!!!"

"We are part of the U.S.?.........merde!"

Actually I expect the US to lose a few states.

Arpig -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:55:46 PM)

True enough Hunky. And when one thinks about it, sooner or later the US is going to want more of our oil (and even more likely our water) than we are willing to give up, and then some sort of US takeover is pretty much inevitable...as friendly as our two countries are, when we start withholding a vital natural resource that the US needs, then all the years of friendship will count for squat.
There are some Canadians who misguidedly think we should join OPEC and use our oil to force the US to take us more seriously...bad idea, its like standing next to an elephant and sticking it in the balls with a pitchfork....to use your favourite phrase...STOMP!!
As far as some violent takeover, well Canada has the same basic defense as Russia...we're just to friggen big to occupy effectively, but unlike the Ruskies, the vast majority of our population is within a few hours' drive of the border so that part could be occupied easily enough, but unless some sort of statehood deal was worked out quickly the fact that most of the country is not occupied would begin to cause problems.
I think I agree with Butch, you should all become Canadians, then we could all go south for the winter with far less hassle, and we could take our health coverage with us [:)]

We could work out some sort of time share deal whereby we go south in the winter to enjoy tropical climes while you guys go north so you can ski for cheap and enjoy a white christmas....really there is nothing like it, just imagine skating to work every day, you'd love it....come on, its a chance of a lifetime.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:56:37 PM)

You do know Jefffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff that most of us Quebecers don't actually want to separate, right?

Jeffff -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 5:57:59 PM)

zeph, if I let the facts get in my way, where would I be?

That's putting it mildly[:D]

Can you just imagine the reaction in Congress to the demand that everything be labeled in French as well as English??

pahunkboy -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 6:02:29 PM)

A batch of US states tho only have partial statehood.   This means the fed ties up lands that the state could be efficiently utilizing.

If the state had jurisdiction over said lands- the state would do better---

Jeffff -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 6:17:15 PM)

Not only that, but I will lower your taxes and you will have access to the finest health care in the world!

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 6:22:42 PM)

Well no, Jefffffffffffffffffffffffffwey but you might have access to ours [;)]

Brain -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 6:36:52 PM)

Steven Harper will give the United States whatever it needs like Tony Blair helping George Bush in Iraq. There will be no reason to go to war.

LanceHughes -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 6:50:07 PM)

And here I thought the thread was about making Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora, etc. into a big-ol' buffer state.  Sorta lay California on its side.

Think of the SAVINGS!  All that long, long border would be cut in half!  And besides, most of the people trying to immigrate to the US would automatically be US citizens!  The aging population would no longer have to "sneak" across to get their medications, and so on.

I'm reminded of a terribly politically INCORRECT joke:

Why doesn't Mexico have a good Olympic swimming team?
All their strong swimmers are on this side of the Rio Grande.

See... we'd get an even stronger Olympic team!

Lucylastic -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 7:02:44 PM)

Ill go for the US becoming a few extra provinces...not waanting to go the other way tho:)

servantforuse -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 7:10:44 PM)

If we get another State, lets go south of the border instead of north. The weather is much nicer and they grow agave down there.
