One of my former housemates grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran next door, and successfully put out a kitchen fire. I seriously doubt there was a conscious "maybe some chick will think this is hot and I'll get laid," he just responded. Two guys who were both bigger than I am were abusing an animal, and I attacked them in order to get them to stop. I didn't think it through, I was just overwhelmed by adrenaline and emotion, to the point where my sense of self-preservation just didn't come into play. I've heard of many reports of "hysterical strength" where someone was able to lift something that they never could have from a cold start, when a child or someone they loved was at risk. It's not altruism, it's not carefully considered, it's pure reaction. People do altruistic things such as give money to charity (in exchange for tax benefits), and a lot of people enjoy doing nice things for others, especially people they care about. Those things don't spark such strong emotions, so they do tend to be more considered. Even then, the person doing them probably doesn't think through exactly what benefits they might derive, it's more "well, it doesn't harm me at all, it's not a big deal, and <other person> will be happy."
