As for the rest... eh... i made the earnest attempt and was stone walled.

Not to pile on when you're fighting so many different people, but I for one am still at a complete loss to understand what it was you were attempting to do. I've tried to figure it out so I could understand what was happening in the thread, but I'm no closer to it than I was 20 pages ago. I have no idea what any of this was about.

She was trying to get a self professed atheist to capitulate to her worldview and failed catastrophically.

Nice.

If I recall correctly, it was R.A. Lafferty who wrote a short story about various species that visited a planet or location where all pertinent questions could be answered. Each species perceived the answering agency in its own unique way. They all asked their questions, but none got an answer for - unknown to them - their questions were not the right questions.

I guess cm is eating posts now. No explanation needed Panda. Call it a scientific experiment that gave the results many expected, yet, no one wanted.

Many fine posts died this day I can tell you.

Anyway, after 39 pages, has a consensus been reached here?

On the use of a strawman?

It would take at least 60 to sort out the God thing.

tazzygirl -> RE: Why do people think it's ok to strawman an atheist? (6/23/2010 5:51:17 AM)

In order to sort out the "god" thing, it has to start with an agreed upon definition of the term "god". you saw what happened with the definition of faith or belief. Do you really believe 60 pages would be enough?

ETA

As far as the OP and strawmanning, there have definitely been enough examples in this thread to show that some people truly understand the term as its supposed to be used, and others just like to toss out the term in an attempt to derail a debate. Labling all forms of debate tools as strawmanning is indeed one such way.

Taz...God means different things to different people. Who is right and who is wrong is not up to us to say.

Life is way to short to argue this, because it will never end. All we can do is embrace our beliefs and not criticize others for theirs.

I actually didn't see that happen, oh wait, do you mean when the dark went off on you for trolling?

I hate to get all serious on your ass at this point, but everything is energy, everything.....

Yeah I get that I could turn the matter in my desktop into energy by say lighting it on fire but that doesn't actually answer my question does it?  When I turned my desktop off for the night where did the energy that was animating it go?

It is for me to say.

Only anosognosiacs argue without ever ending.
Only anosognosiacs use straw man arguments.

As far as I recall, unlike some anosognosiacs I could name, I have never applied a straw man argument on these forums.

I disagree. I have no beliefs nor prejudices and it is my purpose in life to educate anosognosiacs.

See anosognosia.

I'm still reading, I certainly haven't researched it yet so I don't know where I stand on this. But my initial thought is this would go a long toward explaining low IQ super-genius's.

One of the variations on Murphy's Law states that not only are the initial thoughts of anosognosiacs wrong, but most likely nearly all of their thoughts are wrong.

There are high IQ geniuses, but there are no high IQ super-geniuses. It is like a see-saw: both ends cannot be high or low simultaneously.

Sometimes folks have an instant gut reaction to things and know where they stand immediately on something dont necessarily need to study the heck out of something to make a decision.

Have you read Malcolm Gladwells' Outliers? It goes quite a bit of distance to explain the different conditions which will affect the outcome of the so-called genius. Totally worth reading and very revealing.

I don't mind, I'm not certain I know what your looking for though. I've been told I'm not an atheist by theists when I didn't fit their definition of an atheist, that's not something that I mind, I'm not terribly attached to the label. If they will actually discuss what my position is as opposed to what they think it should be, that's great.

I was interested how you felt in reverse - no motive or anything![:)]  Thank you for answering.
